Ready or not.... baggage and all.....

You strike me as a good guy. I'd just avoid calling those who disagree with you "Super Fine Gentlemen".

When I think about who I would want with me in a foxhole, my first consideration is someone I can trust. I simply don't trust Urban Meyer. Given his history, I'm not sure how anyone could.

When I think about the type of football program I want to have and that I would be proud of, winning is obviously important. I get it...winning is fun. The last 20 years of losing have been horrible.

But if we sacrifice everything else to win, what are those victories worth? If we bend the rules or even cheat to win, can we still be proud of winning? We used to make fun or Miami and the SEC for abandoning any semblance of principles to chase titles. Do we want to be like them? Or should we try to be something better?

Answer the question:

Have you been in a Foxhole?

At least give me that.

What if it wasn’t Urban, but Matt Rhule or Lance Leipold. Would they move the needle? We need someone like Mel Tucker. Someone super passionate about the game of Football and develops his players. What about Ken Dorsey of the Buffalo Bills or Bienemy? Charles Huff of Marshall? Jim Leohnard? Dave Aranda? Bottom line is nobody is a sure thing. We need someone to be committed, willing to roll up their sleeves and work their tail off. Someone who those players are disappointed to let down. It may not be Urban, but there is someone out there that can find a way to do it. Fleck found a way to do it at Minnesota, why can’t it happen for someone here?

We'll have to agree to disagree then cause they can all win here within 2 years and have us in a conference title games in 3 years.

Again how many times are we going to continue down this road of failure? This program can no longer go that route. People will stop going to games and donating money.

It's currently all about wins and losses. That's it. The losing has to stop or people will stop caring.
Flat out, Urban Meyer or Deon Sanders hired and I'm done. There is a right and wrong way. Both are wrong.

Please refresh yourself with what is etched on the wall:

"Not the victory, but the action; Not the goal, but the game; In the deed, the glory."

If Trev hires Urban, he needs to remove these words because they will no longer apply. The man has no honor. The winning is everything mindset just needs to go.

Have you been in a freakin' Foxhole? I don't think so because the last I checked, there aren't Foxholes on ships.

Hell, I'm ex-Army and I wasn't in a Foxhole. Hub served and was stationed in Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict and he wasn't in a Foxhole. That certainly doesn't make him a ***** (not having been in a Foxhole).

Please just drop the "real men versus *****" crap. I just don't see any need for that crap here. As I see it, real men are providers, treat their spouse and any children with respect, are good citizens, law-obiding, etc. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with winning football or being in foxholes. There were a Baby Poop-ton of scared boys in foxholes during our various wars, just doing what they had to do but they were still just boys at the end of the day, trying to make it back home to their families and girlfriends.

Uenth, I consider you a friend and don't want to piss you off but I don't 'get' your depiction of Urban Meyer as a 'win at all costs' coach. Back in the day, did you consider Tom Osborne a 'win at all costs' coach like he was depicted by the national media? What does a coach do to earn your 'win at all costs' label?

If your distain is all about the highly publicized dirt surrounding Urby's assistant coach, Zach Smith, I'll agree that stunk. But the only difference between Urban Meyer and Bo Pelini is that the stories during the Pelini era were hushed up. Trust me, if they would have been publicized, a number of them would make the Smith story at Ohio State look tame by comparison.

That stuff is in the past now and I don't bring it up to bash our program--I love Husker football, always have and always will. And I understand and appreciate that the program is like family to many of us. But while we can cheer for the team and their successes, we cannot afford to wrap our own personal identities around them. In the end, it's just a game folks.

I consider you a friend as well. I'll take your comments under advisement.

Yes, the Zach incident, the video from the bar leaves a horrible taste in my mouth.

How is he supposed to lead young men to be honorable -- nothing honorable there.

Yes, it's just a game and my psyche is not wrapped up in it. But we all have lines. Hiring someone who condoned Zach's treatment of his wife and his off-field antics leave me shaking my head as to why he would even be considered.

I quit following because of Bo and didn't watch any under Mike Riley, other than 30-45 minutes while at a restaurant.

I'm not good with having this guy leading our team, just on the above 2 things.

One of the interesting aspects of our discussions about Urban Meyer is that we're doing it when there is no definitive evidence, other than click-bait Twitter and Youtube reports, that Trev Alberts is seriously considering him.

It made me realize something, ANY NAME brought up can engender a heated debate. But trust me, once Trev makes his announcement, that coach will be enthusiastically endorsed. Sure, there are always a few naysayers -- heck, even Frost brought out some. But for the vast majority of us fans, we're ready to jump on board.

I mention this because if I had known back-in-the-day that Mike Riley was a coach under serious consideration, I would have BLASTED the very notion of hiring him. I would have gotten on my blowhard high horse and said, "Are you kidding me??!? He's on a six game LOSING streak at Oregon State for crying out loud? What on God's Green Earth makes him a prime candidate for the Nebraska job?"

But the announcement of Mike Riley's hire came out of the blue. We weren't discussing him at the time. So naturally, when the word came out I unleashed my vitriol on the message board I was posting to at the time, right? um, Nope. :ashamed0001:

Instead I ignored the evidence and assumed our AD was a frickin' genius for finding such a diamond in the rough. Mike Riley, with our mega-resources compared to Oregon State, was going to win bigtime. Hey, once upon a time, Alabama wanted him to be their head coach and he turned them down!!! Yep, that's the kind of rationalizing most fans do once reality sets in. As posters like Mrjfb can attest, my posting history is full of putting the best spin on things.

And guess what? We're all guaranteed to do it again. If Urban Meyer does get the call, you can bet your last dollar that the vast majority of the fanbase (Uenth excluded) will embrace him with open arms and start talking about how he's faced up to his behaviors of recent years and is a new man looking forward to a fresh start rebuilding a storied program like Nebraska's.

And just for the record, if it turns out to be Campbell, the Iowa State coach who -- IMHO has seen his time in the spotlight come and go -- you can rest assured that I will instantly become a 'born again' Campbell supporter. It goes with the territory of being a fan.

Think I'm still suffering from booster shot brain fog.

I'm reacting more, I think, to posters with the we just need "to win" mind set.

How does a coach who condoned wife-beating react to a LP situation? How does he tell his players to keep it zipped when we have video evidence he doesn't? I said it in one of my first not Urban posts, he has the morals of a pig and this is the best Husker Nation can do.

I'm hoping that this is just what Trev was talking about last Sunday, as far as rumor and innuendo running abound. But nothing that would be seriously considered.

Can we not find a decent coach whose middle name is not Misogynist?

Show me where he condoned wife beating.

I was unaware that you became a Husker fan again when Scott Frost was hired and was never on the Bo Pelini bandwagon. I don't want to act like the college coaching community is full of guys with "the morals of a pig" but neither is it a fraternity full of choirboys either.

When you have a bunch of guys making big money coaching a sport, stuff happens. And like it or not, its often easier to 'look the other way' than to deal with because your program takes an embarrassing PR hit. Once upon a time, Joe Paterno was bound for Sainthood. In fact, he had a 'saintlier image' than Tom Osborne. If the appalling stuff that went on there with one of their coaches had never surfaced, Joe would have gone to his grave as one of the most revered, all-time greats in CFB history. But Joe tried to quietly sweep it under the rug and it came out.

Stuff happened during the reign of our Almighty Bobfather too. But those were different times. If Devaney were coaching today he would have had to clean up his act or he'd have been in the exact same barroom situation we're calling out Meyer for.

I'm curious as to why, and how about Nebraska that makes him "very interested."

Can you share specifics to this Kate? Thnx in advance.

You are correct if you want to wait another 5 years. By that time it's too late for husker football to ever be what it once was.

You can't name one coach other than Meyer who can ha e us contending for conference and national titles within 3 years. He'll have us winning within 2 years. No other coach outside of Saban,Smart,Swinney can do that and they aren't leaving their spots.

We are in dangerous territory right now. You know why? Because I laughed during the game yesterday. I wasn't even remotely upset by what I saw. Just a chuckle here and there at the ineptitude and ready for the 330 games.

That, in a nutshell, is fan apathy. We just don't get phased by the embarrassment anymore.

I am surprised Urban is interested to be honest. Have my doubts he'll actually sign a contract.

If he does - I am OK with it. Dude will have a killer staff - which will build the Program back. He won't last more that 5 years as HC - probably less. I can tolerate that to get the ship righted.

Oddly enough, I am sorta friends with a guy who knew Deion through his baseball career. He said he's actually a really straight and narrow dude who is gigantically about accountability and discipline. No drinking or smoking, Church going fella.

Not sure if that's completely accurate but I was very surprised to hear that.

I imagine he's interested because he's humiliated. Would you want Jacksonville to be the last entry on your Wikipedia page?

I'm in the Pro Urb Camp but I too wonder about his true interest in this job. Dude has a big enough ego that I can see him soaking up all this adulation from Husker Nation just for kicks. His Nebraska pick yesterday and his continuous fawning over the fans leads me to believe we are being played guys and gals. We shall see...

Driving home from the game I was listening to Bock's post-game reaction show on The Ticket so the radio was still on that station when I went out to run some errands later in the day.

Apparently they switch to some national CBS talk radio show at some point during the weekend because the host was talking about the Urban-Nebraska thing and wondered why in the world Meyer would ever want to move to Hicksville Lincoln when he's lived in Columbus, Ohio and Gainesville, Florida. I've been to Gaineville and I've been to Columbus--and they're supposed to be better and more 'cosmopolitan' places to live than Lincoln, Nebraska??!? WTF???!?

The BS we've heard about Nebraska has been going on for decades and decades. It's always a hick University in a hick town surrounded by corn fields. But at least back-in-the-day we could kick butt on the playing field and shut these no-nothing sports blowhards up.

Right now I would take 5 years of good football in a heart beat or probably another 8 years of Bo Pelini if we could get back to minimum 9 wins. But we know Bo antics would not be tolerated by Trev
