Huskers Rhule

Beat Penn State!
I doubt it's going to happen since Penn State's fall this season was totally unexpected but with seats selling at under $20, it would be awesome to see another huge Sea of Red road game crowd in Happy Valley next week.

I have to admit, my long road trip days are behind me but when I first heard how easy it is to get tickets, I was sorely tempted to go out there myself. A win next Saturday with a sizable Nebraska crowd would be a sweet, 'Happily ever after' ending to this season's coaching drama.

I just google mapped from where I live to Happy Valley, PA and it is 1,900+ miles. So no, I will NOT be road tripping to this game even if tickets were free. LOL

It should be noted that most of the red-clad Husker fans at these games aren't driving (or flying) from the State of Nebraska. The vast majority of the Nebraska fans who dominated the Rose Bowl live on the West Coast and all those fans who were at the Maryland game live on the East Coast.

I remember in the 90s driving up the New Jersey turnpike to the kick-off classic being held in the Meadowlands when we lived in Virginia and I swear every other car who passed us waved and honked because they were red-clad Husker fans going to the game too from Maryland or Virginia or somewhere else on the East Coast.

Nick Bahe used a golf analogy to describe Rhule's tenure in Nebraska thus far.

"As the head coach, you only get so many mulligans."

For non-golfers, a mulligan is a term used when you hit the first tee shot of the day way out of bounds or maybe top it and dribble the ball just a few yards off the box. Your friends/playing partners sheepishly look away and act as if they weren't paying attention, and you embarrassingly tee up another ball and pretend it never happened (without penalty). Depending on your playing partners and the predetermined rules, some groups allow a "mulligan" off any tee box throughout the round, not just the first hole, and some groups take numerous mulligans throughout the round (again, without penalty). The moral of the story is if you are ever talking golf with someone you have never played with and they are bragging about their scores, just smile and say, "that's awesome!" Fishing stories and golf scores are the same...easy to exaggerate.

Now, back to Matt Rhule and Troy Dannen on the golf course.

Hole #1 Retains Don Raiola as Oline coach
Rhule hits a duck hook OB, Dannen had to run back to the clubhouse to take a whizz, oblivious to the start.

Hole #2 Jeff Sims (QB transfer with NFL talent)
Rhule slices his tee shot into the woods, and Dannen is conveniently tying his shoes and doesn't see a thing.

Hole #3 Satterfield named OC
Rhule hits a dribbler into the pond 20 yards in front of the box. Dannen is distracted by a bird flying by.

Hole #4 Rhule names Bradden Dline coach
Rhule misses the ball entirely and pretends it was a practice swing. Dannen is digging in his golf bag, searching for his range finder

Hole #5 Butler named DC
Rhule hits his drive off the toe and nearly strikes a player on an adjacent green. Dannen examining how to turn on the bluetooth speaker, didn't see a thing.

Hole #6 EJ gets 12 touches in his home state Minnesota
Those damn birds again, is this an Adolf Hitchcock movie?

Hole #7 Red Zone offense, you pick the game
Rhule hits sky ball tee shot, 40 yards off the tee. Dannen staring blankly at the scorecard

Hole #8 Red Zone defense, you pick the game
Rhule chunks his tee shot and takes a foot of turf that flies further than the ball
Dannen inexplicably taking a piss behind a tree

Hole #9 Little used HH is placed under center to score inside the 5 yardline against Iowa
Rhule hits another skyball into a different fairway and yells FORE! Dannen jamming to some 70s music with his earbuds, missed it.

Before the turn they take a quick trip into the clubhouse for some grub and find Scott Frost in his usual place at the end of the bar.

Hole #10, The year is 2027
Dannen announces before the first tee shot on the back 9 that all shots will be counted. Rhule gets those same shifty eyes he got when first questioned about DR transferring last month.

Just saw this and chuckled over it. Our first Husker game was the Arrowhead venue for Nebraska and Okie State during Fearless Frankie's first year as our feckless head coach. The game was billed as a "home" game for OSU. We drove from Leavenworth to Arrowhead and I swear ever car we passed (A LOT) either had Nebraska plates or Husker gear hanging in their windows. The only OSU fans I saw were sitting next to us. A very sweet older couple and she confided to me that she didn't care who won. They had only come to watch their granddaughter and the OSU band perform at half time. I really enjoyed chatting with her during the game.

I heard his comment about wanting to be at Nebraska. The fact is Penn State came to the realization within a week of firing Franklin and seeing the Minnesota game that Coach Matt was not the answer in Happy Valley. Only then did he become a staunch Nebraska Guy again. Frankly Coach Matt would get ZERO interest from any other P4 school if they had a coaching vacancy. Nebraska is stuck with him.
