Huskers Rhule

People can, and will, always grouse about any situation short of a natty every year. But I believe the next ten years with Rhule and Dannon are going to be special.

Dynasties don't happen overnight. Folks need to remember that it took Tom Osborne over 20 years -- in an arguably less challenging environment -- to win his first national championship. But one of his traits that I believe Rhule shares is that both men were open to change and learn from the trials in their past.

If you ever had a chance to listen to TO's recruiting pitch back-in-the-day, he stressed that in an ever-changing CFB world (and this was back in HIS day), you could depend on consistency at Nebraska. We would give them excellent coaching, a positive culture, day-to-day continuity and growth, great facilities (for back then) and the best and most loyal fanbase in all of CFB. Matt Rhule's message today is nearly identical and it will allow the program to continue to grow and prosper as it did back-in-the-day. It's the Nebraska Way!

If it was never in doubt why did we need to give him an extension?
It was a 2 year extension with no increase in his base pay. The negotiations began before Franklin was canned. This extension had nothing to do with keeping him from going to Penn State. It just so happened that Franklin got his butt.canned during this extension.

The story I read on LJS was that AD was concerned M R buyout was so low

You don't talk about 'home' being Nebraska in your presser and make a big deal about it on your House Rhules podcast, if you're going to turn around and renege on everything you've said for the past three years. There are some college coaches who'd do that, but not the Matt Rhule we've all come to know.

As much as the previous two weeks made my stomach queazy, I'm 100% confident now that this Penn State business is over. FWIW, all the bettors out there do too.

His previous buyout was pretty low but the new one is much higher. That being said Dannen even said in the PC that he and Rhule were talking about an extension before Franklin was canned. And Rhule said his wife decides where to live and not only did he say that to us in public he told that ro the team in private. He's not going to put his wife's name out there like that in front of the whole world if they were seriously considering leaving. He doesn't strike me as the type of husband to essentially say that about his wife if it wasn't true. Otherwise if he was considering leaving he'd have left her name out of the convo altogether.

The man might be the boss of the family, but the wife is the glue that holds the family together. A guy like Rhule probably works 14-hour days, so his wife's life is even tougher. She has to be a special person to be able to do all that. You had better believe Matt listens when she talks.

I agree. No one, and I mean NO ONE had James Franklin getting fired mid season, or at all, on their bingo card for this year. So yeah, I find it exceedingly plausible that Rhule's extension was in negotiation prior to this. It's just with Franklin's extremely surprising firing, it put a little more urgency to finalize the extension.

Sure you do. You always talk up the place your at so that recruits want to come there. You ALWAYS say how much you love it. Until its time to leave.

As I said in the post you quoted, coaches have done that in the past and will continue to do that. Hell, OUR coach did that when he was at Temple and at Baylor for better opportunities for himself and his family. But Coach Rhule has broken-off the shovel handle during his time in Nebraska emphasizing to his initially sceptical new fans that he was One Of Us.

None of us can predict what's going to happen with Rhule -- or any of us -- in the future. But this moment strikes me the same way I felt when Tom Osborne announced he was staying at Nebraska instead of going to CU.

And for all the drama we experienced (and the real or imagined impact it had on the team), it says to me that Rhule got a commitment from our program's big donors that we're going to be even more aggressive next winter when it comes to the transfer portal market.

That, along with the continued development of all of our young pups (FYI, we're the youngest team in the B1G this season), strikes me as encouraging signs for the future.

If I could tell Matt Rhule one thing it would be this: You want Nebraska to be respected? Then you have to start winning games against ranked teams and on the road.

This 0-29 streak of losing to ranked teams is so ludicrous I would have thought it was statistically impossible to have that bad of a record. And not being able to back to back road victories together? Equally ridiculous.

Baby steps. Let's just start by winning against ranked teams period. At home, on the road, or neutral sites.

Ultimately coach Rhule will be judged on wins and losses and championships and bowl games but he's doing alot more for these players than coaching football.
I would add that he's doing alot for us too. As a fan base, I'd opine we're much healthier psyche-wise than we've been in over fifteen years.

Growing up, Nebraska football was family to me. It was listening to Lyle Bremser on my Grandpa's lap riding his tractor; it was biting my lip when my Dad used to grouse on and on to me about how Tom Osborne was "no Bob Devaney;"and my Mom making cassette recordings of the radio calls for me when I couldn't do it myself. Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne weren't just football coaches, they were members of my extended family.

The culture had become so engrained in my psyche that I wasn't even aware of it at the time, but when Steve Pederson (right or wrong) fired Frank Solich, it shattered that sense of family for me (and I suspect alot of Husker fans.)

It was one of those nights when I can tell you where I was and what I was doing when it was announced on TV that Solich was gone. Ever since that day, our fandom has been in search of that grand sense of community we had since Devaney. Having lived through it, I would opine that it was much bigger than football.

To the credit of our fanbase, we've refused to 'give up the ghost.' We tried and tried and TRIED to keep it alive. There have been a few times when I thought it was on the verge of returning, especially because we all desperately wanted it so badly. But it was pretty obvious early on that Bo wasn't Tom or Bob, as Nebraska football's CEO or as Husker Nation's 'spiritual' leader. Not even close. Same with Frost.

Say whatever you want about Matt Rhule, his coaching staff, and our current players--warts and all. I believe he has already brought back those endearing, old he's 'One Of Us' family vibes we had back-in-the-day. Speaking for myself, the last three years have been a joy to watch unfold--yeah, despite the losses. When the pundits poo-poo Nebraska football now, it's bringing back those same, "You bastards just wait and see," Will Compton-like feelings I had as a Nebraska farm boy.

I'm 'all-in' with Troy Dannen. Like him, I believe it's only a matter of time. We're not where we want to be and we certainly have a challenging slate of opponents in front of us next year. But we finally have the right coach at the helm to get our program back to the mountaintop.

I'm just praying to God it won't take Rhule over 20 years to do it like it took Osborne.
 :)
