Stop and think about the coaching staff's Nebraska has had from 2013 through 2022...
Pelini's last few years. A toxic ahole coach who literally blamed the fans and media for how terrible the team played. A coach who openly spoke about how much he hated us fans. What a p.o.s..
Mike Riley. If Pelini's last 2-3 years was the start of the decline, then this Oregon State loser caused the program to fall off of a cliff. Lifting and strength and conditioning became optional and we all saw Nebraska really start to get pushed around, especially at the LOS. The ultimate insult was watching a Northern Illinois team come into our house and just flat out-effort Nebraska enroute to a win. This embarrassment of a head coach literally put Nebraska into the abyss of college football.
Scott Frost. Prodigal son who returned home where anything positive he did was then negated by something stupid he did. And we cannot forget that he was drunk most of the time. Oh and when he blew off the recruiting meeting with Dylan Raiola and his family. Emphasis on strength and conditioning returned, but Nebraska was so far behind the metaphorical 8 ball it took Frost's entire 4 years just for us to begin catching up. But in the end, the drinking, lack of focus, mind-numbingly stupid play calling, and generally speaking very average recruiting classes doomed Frost and the program.
Now we have Matt Rhule. Nebraska is currently not a great team, but they're solidly trending in that direction. This year Nebraska is exponentially better on Special Teams than we've ever been since the days of Tom Osborne. Michigan State, Maryland, and Northwestern were games that, the way the played out, in Nebraska's past they would have lost. This team still has big issues at OT and stopping the run, but is head and shoulders better than we've been since 2012 at least.
I am happy Coach Rhule's contract was extended, now let's see the kinda of play against USC and moving forward where we don't look back at the extension he just signed today and think, "What the hell were we thinking?"
