Next #1 QB ?

Interesting since he still doesn’t have an offer from us yet. Really curious who the mystery qb target is. Assume he’s still got a game to play.
I could be wrong, usually and, but I thought it was confirmed he had an offer?

Per Callahan today we can’t make an offer to someone unless we’re prepared to accept it and he is not our primary target so we have not offered. If we do offer Thompson the other target went a different direction.

Yeah, losing a team was what I was alluding to.

I know we didn't see that much of Smothers but I would like to have seen more of him.

Haven't not been calling for Frost (if I recall correctly), I thought it was fine to see what was out in the TP but I didn't see it as the end all to be all. That falls in line with the new coaching staff, IMHO.

I just have a sinking feeling that Smothers will see limited exposure again this year. Then, because of our starting QB getting injured, we'll need him but due to lack of reps and meaningful playing time Smothers won't measure up to Frost's expectations and Frost will feel justified in keeping him on the bench.

Lack of development of potential talent seems to be a weakness our Head Coach has.
Frost is not who should be developing the players. That is a job for the position coach. I agree that we have seen minimal development in AM. However, it is hard to develop when the line is as bad as NU's. Actually, when AM had time, he did a pretty good job of delivering the ball.

Smothers does not fit the mold for the type of QB this program wants now. His passing skills are poor, and his main asset is his running skills. His best move would be move to safety or receiver where he can hone his talents. NU will be pursuing pass first QBs, who are tall and possess a big arm. I doubt we will see more than a couple of designed QB run plays a game.

If there is a mystery QB, it raise other issues as you can’t talk to player on other teams until they are officially in the portal— just like Kentucky didn’t talk to WR1 until he was in the portal

Very interesting. I think all this "mystery" QB stuff is nonsense. Some are grasping at straws hoping for good news because we've come up empty so far.

What is so distasteful about Thompson? As I laid out his td-int ratio is on par with anyone we've had post Osborne. That's 20 plus years. But we're fantasizing about Mr. Mystery. Who is that? The Alabama qb? Tom Brady found some old college eligibility? Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, Thompson would be a great portal get for us.

How many years does Thompson have left?

True but it does happen and we’ll know before long .

I don't if we need another quarterback, and if we do which one to offer. I do think there are some good ones that I would hope the staff would take a look at if they became available.......Ward and Grayson McCall come to mind pretty quickly. I would expect Whipple to have a pretty good grasp on what he likes so I would expect a solid decision if he thinks we need more qb bodies.

Yeah, you're correct -- that would have been the cigar chomping dude. Just seemed like we haven't seen a lot of player development based on the lack of players rotating in and out of the game. That's been one of my biggest frustrations the last 4 years.

Hoping that changes with the new coaching staff.

I was looking up info on Ward and this was the 24/7 observation...
Ward is a high-ceiling, low-floor quarterback in the portal. The former will get him plenty of FBS interest, including from some Power Five programs. Ward is a toolsy player. He is a good athlete, has top-notch arm talent and can deliver throws from different arm angles that few can. At the same time, he has a fumbling issue and is prone to making bad decisions when the play breaks down. Ward produced 23 big-time throws this past season, but also 23 turnover-worthy plays. He is young though and getting acclimated to a pure passing offense after playing in a Wing T system in high school. Ward is just scratching the surface.
...doen't look like the answer for us.

Damn... replace the name Ward with Martinez and welcome to the Huskers 4 year nightmare.

I'd still like the staff to take a hard look at this young man, and see if the above flaws are fixable or not. Also if they are fixable quickly.......that's the real issue here. This staff doesn't have the luxury of time to fix things. They need to click quickly if this staff wants another year or two to completely right the ship.

He has many suitors. Kiffen wants him at ole Miss pretty badly, and so does Arizona. His head coach (Morris) is going to Washington St I believe, and I'm not sure if they're looking at him or not. That might tell us something.

There is also a world of difference between the fcs and fbs so there's that. Whipple has probably been around long enough to have an idea of answers to these questions, and the fact that Cameron has been in the portal for three weeks and his name isn't mentioned very much by those around NU probably says something about our interest level.

But here's an interesting view from Erc Townsend an Arizona writer......

"Cameron first took college football by storm, playing in six games for the Cardinals as a true freshman as he passed for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns to just four interceptions while completing 183 of his 303 passes (60.4 percent).

However, this past season is what turned peoples’ heads, especially as he started in all 13 games, throwing for an astounding 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions, all while completing 384 of his 590 passes (65.1 percent)."

Not so fast there, Casey Thompson has yet to get a verified offer from us, Purdy has. Purdy is a 3-4 year guy. If he does come.
I'm hearing now that the guy we want is a proven starter who is as of right now not in the portal ? Whatever that means is anyone's guess.
I pressed as hard as I dare but got stonewalled at every try so that's all I know.
The reasoning is because Frost HAS TO WIN THIS NEXT SEASON if he wants to keep his job, this also came from same place and I had heard rumors but not confirmed till last night.

Frost and Whipple would like to get a one or 2 and done guy that's a proven guy mostly because of where all our current talent on offense is. Receivers.

I heard were also closing in on a top ranked running back...does this mean the kid Micky was on ? Couldn't get confirmation but from our conversation I would lean to yes that's who it means HOWEVER....UNTILL I get confirmation it's just another rumor.

SPOLIER ALERT......

The reason this young man is even considering us is because of the "supposed" coach for that position that is being ironed out for an announcement right after New Years. I COULDN'T GET A NAME and that really got my goat but, in view of recent events with my mouth getting me in hot water with the powers that be, I felt ok with what I was able to get.

But this is about the QB situation so to get back to that,

It makes sense to me to get a guy like Purdy to develope. We saw the type game ( maybe Whipple will run at Nebraska) on display today against Michigan St. (Whom Pitt lost to by the way) but their Heisman Finalist opted out and then the #1 back up got hurt in the first Qtr. so they basically ran the offense with the #3 guy at the helm and still almost beat Michigan St. And it really wasn't bad to watch ! Kinda good actually !
So that's a plus.
I see what Frost is trying to do here I think, He has a specific type he is looking for that can come in and mesh ok with the team plus lead us to a winning season.....because he really has no other choice.....based on what I heard last night.....it boils down to this in a nutshell;
The Fan Base has waited long enough, we know it hasn't been easy to rebuild to where we are competitive, but when you look at what others do in our division with less talent, we should be winning. It's time to Fish or Cut Bait !

Happy New Year !
Everyone be safe and stay healthy and may each of you have a blessed new year.

DOC & Kate
Thanks Doc for the info that you have and can give us. I'm not surprised by the fact Frost has to win next or he's done. Honestly if he's not 4-2 by October 1st he's probably done.

Anyway I hope we get these coaching announcements done and the QB we want.

GBR!
