Next #1 QB ?

We have oline guys that SHOULD be good - but have not been under Frost. NFL experienced oline coach now on board that played in the B1G........not to mention our best guy got hurt after being elevated to starter - but will be back next season. We need to figure out Center - if the oline is coached properly we have 4 dudes that can play the other spots and likely 2 more I would not worry about playing on rotation or due to injury.
Hopefully the OC figures out what they do well as an oline and actually calls plays to take advantage of that.......

Procuring Thompson would give me some hope for next season. It might be false hope but I'd take it.
Looking at his stat line I wouldn't call it overwhelming but it's not chopped liver either.
So here is an interesting stat I researched. Unless I missed something Thompson's td-int ratio, 24-9, sounds somewhat pedestrian. But get this, it would surpass any full season starter at Nebraska going back to the Osborne years. The only one better was 10-2 by Taylor Martinez in his senior year but that was only from a few games due to injury. The closest was Joe Ganz, 25-11. I consider Ganz the best qb we've had post Osborne.

What a dark world we've been living in. If Thompson can bring a similar performance level it may not be Heisman stuff but it wouldn't be the big, hairy albatross that's been plaguing us.
It might even have the possibility of healing some wounds from the game of the century 2, circa 1987.

Whoops. Missed one. Zac Taylor had a 26-8 ratio so he is the exception. However that puts Thompson in the Taylor-Ganz realm. Not a bad place to be.

I understand the significance of the touchdown to interception ratio and how it can be interpreted as a barometer of success. The issue for Nebraska the last 4 years isn't just the quantity of turnovers, but the timing. A pick in the middle of the second quarter of a 7-7 ballgame is bad but not a game changer. Our problem has been the pick or fumble in the middle of the 4th in a one score game. It happened over and over and over and over and over again. With the occasional punt return touchdown for good measure.

This is one of the reasons that Nebraska has gained the rep of "Turnover U." Combined with the fumbles, it's hard to find another program that has shot itself in the foot more than the Huskers over the past 20 years.

The redfred clan has been fighting some illness so if this has been posted , and it seems a little redundant, appologies.

I'm one who does not much care what style we run on offense, or defense for that matter, as long as it's effective, and run precisely. I can take a spread, an I, heck, even a wishbone if it gets the job done. Same with defense...... a 3-4 or a 4-3 if it works I'm all in.

So after that lead in, I'm guessing we will have at least, one new qb pretty quickly. IF Scott has truly given free rein to the offensive coaches to do what they must, this will be an indicator the direction the offense will move. I'm good with anything Whiff and co come up with.........as long a Scott doesn't micromanage too quickly if there is a hiccup or two early on.

Scott turned the reins over to Chins and co, and that hasn't been a bust by a long shot. Now can he do the same on the offensive side? I hope so. We need a head coach......not one who has his attention divided between play calling and running this program....IMO.

Which of the quarterbacks would I prefer? Answer....Which ever one Whipp wants.

Truth be told my favorite transfer pick has been snatched up by Michigan....Oluwatimi.....a center and Rimington finalist. He's the kind of player you could build an offense around.

It was posted here or I posted it but there was a stat that showed the most turnover prone programs in the past so many years. Nebraska was the worst. My recollection is that we had 90 some turnovers and the next worse program was in the 60s. That is a monumental disparity just between the worst and second worst. It's an amazing stat really. It might have been just lost fumbles, not really sure. In any case if you want to attack our most glaring issue there you go. Or special teams. It's amazing we have won as many games as we have.

I would guess we've been near the worst at forcing turnovers, also, during that period. Do you know if that is true?

Funny you ask I was just looking up turnover ratio. Here is our ranking going backwards in time to Solich's final year.
Frost
103
122
55
87

Riley
101
36
114

Pelini
73
118
108
54
54
33
110

Callahan
117
69
52
108

Solich
2 (yes two!)

As you can see we are dead dog awful irregardless of the coach. We've poked up to average a few years and those usually conjoined with better records. The best season record, not coincidently, was Solich's final year and our highest ranking by far.
The next best, 36, was the year Riley won nine games, the best record by a mile since Pelini. Of the 19 years tracked we've finished in the bottom pit (100+) an astounding 9 times.
There is an obvious correlation here. You take care of the ball, you win games.
We absolutely have to escape from this. This year is the golden example. We have a pretty decent defense, we move the ball well, but the turnover ratio just doesn't allow you to win games. Throw a ridiculous special teams factor in there and you win one P5 game. Look at the Iowa game. It all just screams at you.
