Stupid criticism since the source of money is not the same. But sure go ahead and complain. There is a benefit to spending on athletics. There is a benefit to dollars spent on academics. But enrollments are down for college in general - something has to cut IMHO. Athletics should not be in the conversation - especially at Nebraska since they are self funded.
College Enrollment Decline: 1980s-2020s
After increasing for decades, undergraduate college enrollment peaked in 2010 at around 18.1 million students, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).Note Reference[1] From there, it declined steadily. In fall 2021, about 15.4 million students were enrolled in college.
- Between 1985-2010, college enrollment increased at an average rate of 2.2% a year.
- From 2011-2021, it decreased at an average rate of 1.6% a year.
- In 2021, it was 14.6% down from peak enrollment in 2010.
Yes you have to spend to retain students - aka "compete" but athletics are PART OF THE MARKETING campaign.
