Memorial makeover?

Plans for the $450 million renovation project for the home of Nebraska football have changed.

Husker athletic director Troy Dannen issued a statement on Friday in which he laid out altered plans for the Memorial Stadium renovations.

The biggest piece of news is that South Stadium, which former athletic director Trev Alberts had planned to tear down after the 2024 football season, will not be demolished. Instead, focus will be on renovating the East and West Stadiums first, with a target date for work beginning no earlier than after the 2025 season.

South Stadium will still need to be renovated, but there is not yet a concrete plan for what that renovation will look like, or a timeline for when it will begin. Unlike the East and West Stadiums, South Stadium will rely on public and private funding.

According to media reports, there are plans to add chairbacks and other amenities — possibly catered buffet meals to higher-paying fans — to the East and West Stadiums, which would reduce capacity, reseat fans, create a different price tag for that seat and require premium seat licenses. Any time there's a reseat, fans need to be notified a year in advance.

They need to do something as Me.orial is an aging stadium and fans are staying home more and more. Especially during cold weather games.

Adding chair backs is needed if they want to improve the fan experience. Also as more and more folks stay home they are going to want to reduce seating in order to maintain the sellout streak. Personally after 18 years my wife and I moved our seats. We still don't have a donation to pay but we moved our seats out of the NW corner of the endzone so as to not get hammered by the cold North wind in November.

I thought most people got hammered in the parking lots before the game ?

Is there some reason why the switch to grass cannot happen after this season is completed?

I would guess there is a lot of sub-surface work that will be done when the time comes to make sure: 1. it drains properly/quickly 2. the heating system (presumably) will need to be installed.

I would assume they will do something similar to TD Ameritrade/Charles Schwab field in Omaha, or whatever the best thing is whenever it is done. If you haven't seen or been informed on the substructure in Omaha, it is quite impressive. Better to do it all at once.

I agree. I just want to see grass in Memorial Stadium for the first time in my life sooner rather than later.
