Memorial makeover?

That makes sense GIJoe, but if it's happening, why hasn't there been a news story about it? At a school like Nebraska, that's front page news in Lincoln and Omaha. :)

People that make idiotic ideas reality, tend to not want to let the public know that they're decisions were idiotic in retrospect. (edit) :)

On Rhule's radio show, he said that there are no current plans to revert Memorial Stadium's field to grass.

He said he feels grass is safer for players and when they had an opportunity to redo the practice fields, he thought they should go ahead and do it.

Regents Will Consider Memorial Stadium Renovation Plans

Specific planned renovations include:

  • South Stadium demolition and replacement with chair-back general seating.
  • New chair-back seating in West and East stadiums.
  • 360-degree main-level concourse connection and 270-degree upper-level concourse connection.
  • Concession upgrades, refurbished menu options and added points of sale throughout the stadium.
  • Restroom modernization throughout the stadium.
  • Academic curriculum space, with specific uses guided by UNL’s academic leadership.
  • Enhanced student life amenities.
  • ADA upgrades throughout the stadium.

Seems like a pretty big pile of money considering US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis was around $1B - I know inflation has been bad since that was finished but jeez we are getting a new concourse and South Stadium.....not a domed field. My guess is there are many small things that add up to the full price but in terms of stadium experience not sure it is going to feel like a quarter billion plus once it is done.

That said - LA and Dallas spent way more than $1B and not sure that was a great use of the money in either case. Especially LA since the Rams and Chargers have NO fan bases in LA - the stadium typically has more visiting team fans than "home team" fans. I don't get why they need a friggin' monstrosity of a stadium that is going to cost an arm and leg to maintain without the ticket sales to support it.

Sounds like they are putting seats in. If so I may actually go to a game again. That way I can sit in the seat I paid for instead of one two seats the the left or right...
I hear yeah, SoC. I go to the games early and always rent those lousy seat backs. I don't do it for my back, I do it simply to protect my butt space.

The most frustrating scenes I've had the misfortune of witnessing numerous times is when a couple of fat morons waddle in with popcorns, sodas, and Runzas to take their seats moments before the kick-off. They end up ruining the start of the game for the entire section and disrupt everybody already in their row as they shuffle around to somehow squeeze-in the late comers' fat butts.

Am I understanding correctly? We are spending a half billion dollars and losing almost 20 percent of seating capacity?
Haven’t been to a game for a few years , but the last time I was in the north end zone ( not last game but last time in a end zone ) there was very little space my son was a little Baby Poop and he didn’t have butt space I think he was about 5

I absolutely LOVE going to games in Memorial Stadium. I dont even mind being packed in like a sardine. If I get lucky enough to get an aisle seat I usually just stand in the aisle until an usher makes me move. Then when he isnt paying attention (about 2 seconds later) I move back to the aisle. Being a little crammed is a small price to pay to get to see the HUSKERS play live. You want comfort? Stay home.

No. Current capacity is 85,458. When it hits 90k - that's every b ody through the gates.
So officially it's trimming only 8-9k.

If you make the seats too comfy no one will get on their feet and scream.

Fact is, there are less and less of 'our kind of fans' every year. If we want to continue to see strong attendances in the future, we've GOT to make going to a home game a more enjoyable experience.

The features Trev talked about yesterday sound cool. And despite the lower attendance, the proposed design of the new South Stadium will make Memorial Stadium a more imposing place to play.

In that spirit, I suggest all rennovations go the opposite way: make seating uncomfortable, put spikes for people to sit on, raise concession prices to 27 dollars for a drink, put a dome on and crank the heat to 110°+. Make it as miserable as possible, like being a resident of Colorado.

:bash:

We'll go back to the capacity of the 70s -- about 76,000 or so. Seat prices will escalate with smaller supply and more amenities. TA says they are trying to address the affordability issue. If so, that's going to be a challenge.

I heard Sip say today that after Michigan, Nebraska's schedule this year is the "most manageable" we'll ever see in the rest of our lifetimes. Better competition will be coming in on a weekly basis, and there will be fewer seats in the stadium. Simple math and Economics 101.
