Huskers Rhule

It's not pessimistic at all, it's being a realist. We have yet to see Rhule hold his guys accountable.

For? Rhule has, according to reports, dismissed players from the team for violating the innocuously vague "team rules."

So I am curious what specific instance(s) you're referring to?

His remarks about "tough love" -- I'm not real sure about that. Granted, they're not doing the ice cream and sprinkles thing, Ala Mike Riley but I'd love to see some Dr Tom style on the field and off the field.

TBF, perhaps we don't hear everything that goes on behind the scenes but in today's day and age of players posting anything and everything, I'd be shocked if we aren't hearing the vast majority of locker room/etc antics.

It just seems to me, most days, that the more things change, the more things stay the same. This really is a make or break season as far as I'm concerned. Too many people (fans) are rapidly reaching the point of no return. I don't expect a repeat of Osborne's last 4 seasons but I sure don't want another season ending with a 3 game losing streak; and going back to the last 7 games, we lost 5 of those. Not much progress in that, TBH.

Never less than 9 wins here. We could use his fire.

Yup, his damn temper was really what got Bo in trouble. He was an asshat, but he did know how to coach.

In the beginning of his tenure, absolutely.

However, by the end (I'd say his last 2-3 years) opposing offenses had figured out his match scheme pass coverage and could easily slice it apart. And don't even get me started on how schematically Bo's defense couldn't stop Wisconsin's running game (or anyone else's for that matter.)

And I haven't even mentioned the recruiting which steadily became worse as his tenure progressed. Bo could identify excellent players, he just didn't recruit nearly enough of them.

Bo was built for the Big12. He knew how to defend the pass. The Big 10's running game was his demise. Not to mention, he was such a dick, no worthwhile coach would work for him.

To me, Bo's biggest fault was his non-political nature. He was terrible at shmoozing with boosters or handling his myriad of bosses in the administration. At times it really was Bo against the world. Bo and Jeff Jamrog made their case to a few of the top level boosters about getting some private plane rides for recruiting. They were rebuffed. I remember a story of Bo driving a rental car down a long dirt road to a recruit's house down south. The recruit's Mother said no other coach had come to their home. Bo sat in the living room and told the Mom everything he would do for her son, which was guarantee he would get a college education. He had nothing else to offer, but that was enough to get that recruit. And Bo's kids went to class and got their education. After Bo was gone, Mike Riley had way more cooperation from the bigwigs (remember Calibraska?). Scott Frost got whatever he wanted.
Yeah, Bo couldn't get enough high end recruits, but he took those second tier guys to 9-10 wins a year.
I wonder what would have happened if Bo had a powerfall benefactor who ran interference with the power-hungry swarm that UNL had running things. If he had been given Frost level support he may have caught lightning in a jar. We'll never know.

Yeah, yeah, nine wins. A different era with a different program with different issues.

Do we really want to bestow Sainthood to the immature moron responsible for kick-starting Nebraska's seven-year slide to oblivion???!?

Sorry. Not me.

I think Bo was a better DC than HC. A lot of his shortcomings that have been mentioned are less of an issue for an assistant or coordinator. They become issues when you are the head guy.

That said, I lost all respect for him due to his antics after he was fired.

Pelini set a couple of records as a DC. The all-time NCAA rushing record was set by Wisconsin against his NU squad. The all-time SEC passing record was set against his LSU team.

Pelini did well if he had personnel who fit his schemes. He was unable to adapt when the players were unable to fill his need. Instead of adjusting when things went wrong, he screamed at the players.

There have only been a couple he's dismissed from the team. I'm more talking about a starter continously screwing up during a game and sit them? Pratchett is the only one. He needs to pull guys when they don't perform at all positions including QB. He doesn't encourage ownership like the team from the 90s. Those coaches didn't have to hold them accountable as they held themselves accountable. That was due to excellent leadership. TO would make players run stadium stairs if any player fought in practice no matter who started it both ran stairs. Rhule doesn't do this stuff. He should instill a "I hate losing attitude". He doesn't.

It's kind of a conundrum. Yeah, we won minimum of 9 games under the Boster. But, I still think our issues with officiating go back to the Pelini Era when he made it a habit to be an absolute jerk at every opportunity to the officiating crew. I think they are still p8zzed off about it all. He was classless at times and his behavior, when exiting the football program was beyond the pale. I still get really torqued off about that whole situation but we were winning 9 games a year under him.
