Huskers Rhule

One more observation going into Rhule Year 3 is the coaches’ emphasis on size. We tend to focus on the speedy guys like Barney (and there’s nothing wrong with that.) But IMO the overall team looks bigger than they have in ages.

Obviously, it all comes down to how they perform, but our OLs and DLs all LOOK like warriors now. Nothing against all the scrappy smaller guys we’ve had over the years. But I feel more confident when they all line up looking like Aaron Taylor did back in the day.

Speaking of OL....jersey countdown but a good article on former OL.

Dave Feit’s Greatest Huskers by the Numbers: 77 – Toniu Fonoti

Toniu Fonoti was Nebraska's last First Team All American at OL. Remember when Nebraska used to churn out All American and All Conference OL??? And I mean first team ones.

Fonoti is a coach and has been bringing recruits to Lincoln. We signed one of his players in this last class.

BREAKING: Rising OL Brian Tapu commits to Nebraska

Back in Salt Lake City, Tapu is coached by Nebraska Hall of Famer Toniu Fonoti, who brought him to Lincoln for his first visit earlier this spring. The three-star has learned about the deep tradition at Nebraska and, now that he's committed, is excited to continue to legacy.

Thanks for posting these tweets, ATX!

One of the things we've heard from Sean Callahan is that Matt Rhule is the hardest working HC recruiter he's been around in all his years of covering college football recruiting. Given the respect Callahan has among all the national recruiting muckedy-mucks, that's saying something.

Sean has said on his show that June is the most 24/7 period for all the coaches with non-stop camps and recruiting. Besides the grueling schedule, it means coaches have got to be "on" all the time.

So Coach has a rare June off-day and what does he do? A promo for Omaha Steaks? SMH.

But Rhule is commited to marketing the Nebraska brand AND making Callahan's teenage daughter, Kit, feel like a rockstar.

Is it really only mid-June? Sigh, I swear this is the longest damn off-season EVER!

Right now there is so much amazing positivity around Coach Rhule. If this Year 3 manifests into the success we are all hoping for, this will cement Matt Rhule's place as an absolute legend in the lore of Husker Football.

What is this "IF" shite? J/K -- I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm by saying things like I lived in Missouri so they have to show me, etc but it's getting hard. Just seems like all the signs are pointing to a turnaround this year. I for one am more than ready for it!!!

You already know I think 2025 will be a 10+ win season. However, like you, I am still tempering my enthusiasm because until it actually happens, based on the past 10 years, it is still an IF.

That's because Nebraska changed how they fundamentally operated. It started with Steve Pederson saying [in effect] I'm gonna take what made us so good for 40+ years and throw it away. Even in the 90's during our dominant run there were people saying Nebraska's offense was "out-dated," "old-fashioned," "three yards and a cloud of dust," etc. That "out-dated" offense literally ran over and squashed Florida's fun n gun passing offense. Despite all the evidence that what we were doing worked and produced conference and national championships, it was thrown away. We've been mediocre to bad ever since. That is NOT a coincidence.

Some national media types have opined that while he's not yet on the hot seat, 'the pressure is on' Matt Rhule this season.

^^^^ Does that pic look like a man feeling the pressure?

When you take over a rebuild (and YES folks, our program needed a serious rebuild), you know there's A LOT of work to do. Those first two seasons is when Rhule had to have felt the most pressure. But he's starting to see all of the pieces he'd envisioned when he took the job coming together.

Is there tremendous pressure to win?
Of course there is! But when you feel your program has progressed to the point where you believe your team can compete with the best, it makes all the difference in the world.

I thought this was a very interesting tweet from Coach. I wonder what prompted it?

Who won and what questions remain after recruiting's busiest month

Misses on ESPN 300 cornerback Camren Hamiel (Texas A&M) and Michigan pledges Zion Robinson and Titan Davis, paired with the flip of No. 1 commit C.J. Bronaugh (Florida), lowlighted a challenging June for the Huskers. Nebraska's fading grip on the recruitment of top-100 rusher Brian Bonner Jr. in a battle with UCLA and Washington doesn't help matters, either.

However, coach Matt Rhule and the Huskers recovered from Bronaugh's flip on June 23 with a commitment from ESPN 300 cornerback Danny Odem, and the flip last Friday of four-star Arizona State wide receiver pledge Nalin Scott marked another win. Up ahead, top-300 offensive tackle Kelvin Obot looms as an important target, both for what the 6-5, 270-pound lineman can bring Nebraska and the momentum he could kick off for the Huskers. Obot narrowed his finalists to Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon and Utah in May and visited the Huskers in early June.
