So, how do I handle this family issue: Thanksgiving???

My son wants to come and bring the family for Thanksgiving.

I want them to come, but the kids just started back into in school classes. They live in an Atlanta suburb.

I said by all means come we want you here. But do me a favor please. Go to CVS and have everyone tested before you come up.

My daughter-in-law, a working nurse, considers the test as unnecessary and will be traumatic for the kids. She has been working in an outpatient surgery clinic since this started and there have been no cases at her clinic.

I have COPD, emphysema, and a heart condition. I am 74. My wife as similar lung issues and she is 70.

The questions are:,
1. Do we allow them to come for Thanksgiving?
2. Or, do we insist they be tested?
3. Or do we ask them to wait until there is a vaccine?

Thanksgiving is a month and a half away. Why not wait a month and see what happens then.

Me?
I would find a test thats comfortable for the kids, pay if its more.
The age of the children matter here too. If theyre younger, theyre 'safer' to you, but still a risk.

No expert knows your comfort level, and no expert has enough data as for safety, though it seems mostly so from whats currently known.
If the therapeutics that are just starting to be used is safe for you, in a months time more will be known for you and yours.
You and th misses are near the highest risk range, in age and health, your DIL should know this, and respect it and you.
I hope you guys come to a workable solution.

You already know what to do. You are in a high risk category so you ask them to be tested ahead of time. They will understand and none of your family want to put you at risk so its not that big of a deal. You just have to make the decision for yourself whether the risk of being around them is worth the reward of being around them. Crappy situation, but if I'm you I would trust that they love you as much as you love them and they will do what it takes to keep you safe.

JMO, but I don't think you are out of line for requesting that they be tested before enjoying the Holiday at your place. They may be confident they don't have Covid, but so was I and I tested positive without any symptoms. Even though kids and young people aren't really affected, they should understand the potential transmission danger since you and your wife are at risk. Even if it's an inconvenience, it's a prudent request and they should understand. Even if they aren't worried about Covid, testing is a price they should be willing to pay to enjoy family time together....

My neighbor across the road just had his funeral today. Our first death in our little town. That's four deaths within eight miles of me in just a week.

Well, apparently I must have had Covid-19 at some point. I donated blood last week and lifeserve does antibody testing. Just got the results back today that I am positive for anti-bodies. I have not once felt any sort of symptoms so I have no idea when it would have been. Who knows, maybe I just naturally have anti-bodies.

Well we all knew you were anti something. ;poke

I remember reading several posts that we would quit hearing about COVID-19 after Nov. 3rd. Here it is Nov. 7th and COVID-19 is gearing up.

I wasn't going to post this but here goes.

We had a freak accident outside our house on the 30th. A guy's car caught on fire and he stopped it along side our property line. Gas tank exploded, 20-30 foot flames shooting up. The end result was that our 6' vinyl fence melted, much as the wicked witch did when the bucket of water was thrown on her.

Hub and I are big mask wearers. I never even talk to a customer without my mask on. However, when you look out your door and see flames shooting up like that, a mask is the last thing you think about. We both tore outside unprotected. Probably 40-50 people milling about on our property. Hub came in after 20 minutes or so. I came in to get our insurance policy number for the fire department and masked up at that point.

I'm feeling fine but hub is another story. He's felt pretty crook starting late Monday. I called to get him a dr appointment Thursday and when we discussed his total lethargy and the fact that he was around strangers without a mask on, the end result was that hub went in for a COVID-19 test. Dr office didn't use the rapid testing so we won't get results until Monday now.

I'm on the fence whether or not it is COVID-19 or something else that shares a lot of the COVID-19 symptoms. What makes it sucky is that you cannot get into see your doctor until you know if you are infected or not. So if it's something more serious, it continues to damage hub's health and nothing we can do.

Uenth, that sucks that that accident torched your fence! It's kind of par for the course for 2020 isn't it? The crap that everyone has been through is crazy. I hope your hub stays well, and doesn't get seriously ill. I didn't have any symptoms when I had Covid-19, but I know it can hit some people hard. Let's hope his test is negative and he stays healthy.

2020 has been a long, strange trip indeed. Looking forward to 2021 big-time.

As far as hub goes, if he doesn't have COVID-19, there is something else that might be pretty serious going on -- that's what sucks about the COVID-19 thing. You need to see a doc but because some of your symptoms are the same as some of COVID-19 symptoms; you are on the hot seat until your test results come in. Monday cannot get here soon enough to get the dr's office phone call.

Did I neglect to mention that the owner of said vehicle couldn't be bothered to insure his vehicle? :Sigh:

He didn't seem at all concerned "because you have home owners insurance don't you?" Why yes with a $1,200.00 deductible. He will end up losing his license over this according to our ins agent but all that means is he will drive without insurance and without a driver's license.

Insurance company has a check in the mail and replacement fence should be installed the second week of December.

If you are seriously concerned about his health there is no reason to not take him to the ER.

Except that our ER is currently overrun with C-19 cases. If he doesn't have it, that's a great way for him to get him. He's laying low, taking decongestent, keeping fluids in him. I'm monitoring his breathing issues and temperature. If he spikes a fever or starts having difficulty breathing, he will go to ER.

Otherwise, we're waiting for test results on Monday. If he's negative, I'll call for an appointment. If he's positive, we'll follow what doc's office tells us to do.
