How does denial fuel the pandemic exactly? I'd like to see the scientific study that confirms that. I've lost friends and loved ones from cancer, heart attack, kidney disease and pneumonia. I don't see how my attitude about COVID-19 or any other virus would have anything to do with their deaths.

But the real numbers do paint a more rational picture of what has been happening to the elderly and the sick, especially in nursing homes. The last statistic i read indicates that over 30% of the deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in nursing homes. Probably higher when you consider that many of the dying are among people transferred from nursing homes to hospitals.
Some people don't like hearing this, but in 16-20 months when the final audit of this is done the actual death count from covid will likely be in the 40-50k range. We are getting raw data right now that probably doesn't paint an accurate picture of how this has actually affected the health of our population.

I contracted Covid-19 this week. Tested positive on Wednesday; caught it from my daughter, who is a Senior in High School. We were informed, the day after a volleyball match with Freeman, that they had a positive case on their team who played in the front row. Come to find out, a whole group of kids on the Palmyra football and volleyball teams "had minor sniffles, or a little sore throat" during Homecoming week, but most attributed it to allergy season, which is bad right now. So as the testing unfolded, the entire starting volleyball team tested positive, but several of them never had any symptoms at all. Only one girl out of 9 on the VB team even had a fever. We have now heard that Johnson County Central, Sterling, Syracuse, Freeman, and others are dealing with outbreaks, and the vast majority of the kids are asymptomatic. It's a hard sell to get kids to get behind a system (quarantine, shutdowns, etc.) that will put their normal lives on hold for a virus that isn't getting them sick. My daughter said that the new vibe in the area high schools is that all the kids are avoiding getting tested, because they are only worried about the shutdowns that will result from a positive, not the effect of the virus itself. As for myself, I feel fine. I would have bet a grand that I was negative when I was tested, because I felt great. I still feel pretty good; no respiratory issues, fever, aches, congestion, etc. Just a little more tired than normal and a slight loss of taste. And, the way my wife cooks, that's a good thing........ :)

The unfortunate part of this whole thing is that kids will grow up with a diminished respect for the threat of infectious diseases. They've been through 10 months of being told that this thing is a death sentence, and when they get it they basically just have a headache and the sniffles. This should work out really well in the future when a real threat happens.

Glad you're feeling okay Jarhead. Makes one wonder how many asymptomatic Covid positive folks are out there but have not been tested. The 2009 H1N1 virus infected so many people the administration stopped testing for it. With the rationale being "it's a virus, of course it's going to spread. It was far more deadly than Covid for children/young adults also.

But, they also need to be reminded that they bring it home to parents/grandparents/other family and community members. Anyone of those folks could die. They should be reminded of this, frequently.

Denial fuels the pandemic. I have now lost 3 friends to this hideous virus.
Denial has nothing to do with it. I chose reality. This virus is dangerous if you are very old and have outlying conditions. For the the rest of us it is of little danger. In fact, I was exposed. A guy I play pickleball with came down with it. I was tested and told that I did not have it but I had the antibodies so I had already had it. I didn't even know. The doctor told me that 90% of the people who have it are just like me.

However, you should follow your conscience. If you are afraid, by all means hide in your home and yell at anyone who nears your door.

A lot. I posted earlier in this thread that I've read experts think 10-20 times what's being reported. So 10 times puts the death rate at .3%. not great but not worth shutting down and not living our lives...

It's blowing up in quite a few high schools in Eastern Nebraska. We heard today of another two schools with 50 miles of Lincoln who have outbreaks. I don't think there is any stopping it now. It's too imbedded in the population. I still can't figure out how I got it. I wore a mask everywhere out in public, and social distanced.....even outdoors at the HS football games. I'm starting to think the mask is working as a virus particle collector..... :D

I know someone who has to wear full PPE at work and tested positive. Pretty much asymptomatic. Maybe the masks, etc aren't the end-all be-all that some make them out to be.

Wrong!

Saw a UK study where 73% of fatals were 75 yrs old on up there.
Details werent specced if current health was determined of that age group.

I am hearing theres some fine therapeutics coming, life savers.
