Covid & Discussions of Pro/Con Football Season HERE

I would agree, but in all honesty I think in less than a year there will be something else that commands our attention so this will largely be forgotten. At this point, we have basically learned everything there is to learn about how Americans, politicians, and the media will respond to a pandemic scare, and its not pretty.

After 9/11 there was a commission to look into what happened. Whether we liked everything that came out of that commission or not, the fact that it was commissioned should be important. There was the Warren Commission. Now we may not like the conclusions some of these "commissions" have come to. (lets not delve into that right now.) but if a commission is formed to look at the response to this, by some actual scientists, then maybe we can find some information that could help the next time or for seasonal flu. The American people will not listen. They are to ADD for that, but some... some of the "changes" that could be proposed by a commission to look at this will trickle down to local and state agencies to help respond later. I have been around Emergency Management enough to know that. (The radiation stuff is now in the dumpster... but now they have all sorts of cross communication equipment. Now it doesn't work like they planned but that is a whole other conversation we could have...)

This in a nutshell covers my problem with journalism in America today"

Stanford Journalism Professor Rejects Objectivity In Journalism

At what point do they loose any special privileges that they have earned over the years?
Exactly. That's my main point. The freedom of the press wasn't built into the constitution so journalism could “free itself from this notion of objectivity to develop a sense of social justice.” And, "Journalists need to be overt and candid advocates for social justice, and it’s hard to do that under the constraints of objectivity.” Unreal, but at least they have the b@lls to admit they have abandoned objectivity and don't give a sh!t about reporting the facts..... :mad0003:

So we take one article from Jonathan Turley that quotes like 2 people and paint with a broad brush the entire media landscape? That would be like me grabbing 2 farmers from Nebraska and asking them what they would be planting next season and basing crop forecasts off of that alone.

We would prefer a lot of things, but any move to jail media types of any kind for their work is USSR and (insert dictator's name here) level stuff. We may disagree with them, we may beat them with a wet noodle but to go so far as jail... Yeah count me out. Our government starts levying sanctions on other country's for this kind of stuff.

SOC
Oh, I agree with your points here. But you would be quite inconsistent to suggest we can't jail media like a dictator and then turn around and say we need to follow the lead of China when it comes to heavily restricting the freedom of Americans without proper justification. Because, if one would support that, it would be (insert dictator's name here) level stuff...... As for the media, let's not pretend for a second that the social activism and "selective facts" put out by the media do not have a substantial effect on the masses....

The media is not entirely different than it ever was, and quite honestly I think its so watered down now that nothing needs to be done about it thanks to the internet. People just need to double check stories with at least 2 media outlets that don't align politically and they can get a pretty good grasp on whatever it is they are reading about. If I want to read the news, I start with theBlaze but if something seems too editorialized I go to Huffpo to see if the details are the same. Most of the time they are, so I think there are still some good journalists out there.

Hey your pops is the one who brought it up, so chew his ass about it. :D Well, you did the same thing when painting the entire country as a "leadership fail" for Covid-19 response, didn't you? Not every state was a Covid-19 hotspot but you lumped them all together when denouncing the response of the USA. No, if you would try to be objective about it, you would take what is said by these two prominent journalists, and put it together with what you see and hear around you from several main media outlets, and other sources of data. That is called objectivity, and critical thinking....

I think there was a shift in the late 50s heading into Vietnam, and the media moved more towards the agenda driven approach. The issue I see now is that many people won't do the digging for the truth, and instead accept the "journalism" at face value.....And, I do agree that there are good journalists still out there, and a a couple of them are friends of mine....I just think it's getting more and more rare....

Old man is nuts and on a liquid diet today...;)

Lets try it this way, media from all sides have bias. Just the way it is. That always has been and always will be. My point is you are not going to start jailing media. If we do our democracy is lost. If you don't want to watch on media outlet because you don't like there bias then don't. No one on here is arguing for China level control of anything.

I have done some looking into some of the "journalism" that was going on in the 19th century. That was some weird Baby Poop. Journalists are human and will always have bias. Just cause someone doesn't like there bias doesn't mean that they should not exist. Do like Crazyhole suggests and check a couple places.

There. I have done thunk critically and have been objective...

Curious what that last statement meant

Curious what that last statement meant

So this could be it's own discussion but to start with:

With Douglas Co. 911 director under scrutiny, state halts work on $10M network

Nebraska state troopers say radio problems too risky

Now I don't know the up to the minute information, but last I knew the system might be up now but they had limited who could join it and you had to have special radios to use it. I don't think many local fire and so forth, services had got the ability to use it... The system has changed several times over the last 10 years...

Hey you could have just agreed with me in the first place and we could have saved several hours. :fighting0054: :naughty:

I didn't agree with you on everything, but had to give you props on explaining your views. Besides, if I agreed with you on everything, then you wouldn't have shared your great Admin wisdom with your 1500 posts on this thread..... :D

Good journalism is almost as rare as life on other planets! MSLSD, CNN, etc...are prime examples.
