Basketball Coaching search..

I pray this rumor is true. It would mean DONU is finally getting serious about basketball.
Dunno, these figures are getting a bit over the top for coaches. Look at what the tenured professors are making. They are there to give these young people an education, the real purpose of DONU. Love Scott Frost but $35M-7 years stuck in my craw a bit. Now, if the $28M-7 year figure is correct for men's basketball.

I can just think of things a whole lot more worthwhile than paying exorbitant sums of money for coaches. Especially now with all of our infrastructure wows thanks to the ice jam melt/floods; I just can't justify these salaries. They really are just games.

They are just games..... but they are games that generate a WHOLE lot of money. Money that feeds many departments, so, while I agree the sums are crazy I can also understand somewhat.

I understand that football and volleyball generate some dollars. I'm not educated at what men's basketball brings in.

But, coaching salaries on the collegiate level have reached an absolutely insane level. Just as pro salaries with players have reached a level that is well past insane. I know that a family of four spends a couple of hundred bucks for one evening's baseball game, for instance. Ridiculous.

Blame economics; they are paid what people believe they are worth, and that is directly tied to how much they potentially can bring into the University.

Last I heard mens bball operates in the black... but that is about all I know. I don't know the numbers.

If internet/twitterverse rumors are true, Fred Hoiberg will be new coach. Rumored to be 7 years at $4 million per year.
Also rumor from what person calls a very reliable source that Miles office is empty.
Both just rumors at this point so who the heck knows.

At least it's in the black. That's a plus for sure. In the almost 14 years since we moved back from KS, I've not heard one of our neighbors mention basketball, nor ever seen a Huskers flag fly at any time other than football. Not even when women's vball was in the final four, no flags, no discussions, nothing. Vball is one of my favorite times of the year and so I'm dumbfounded that more people don't follow it. :shrugs:

I'd be very surprised if Miles had cleared out his office with our NIT birth and all. This is just opposite of how Moos operates. The season is not over so I'd be shocked if a dfecision has been made.

For all the talk about Nick Saban's "exorbitant" salary at the time he was hired at Alabama, it literally turned out to be the Steal of the Century for the University given what he's accomplished there.

On the other hand, if you happen to be a university athletic department paying three failed coaches at the same time, that's going to be impossible to defend.

So the key is making the right hires.

Look at what the tenured professors are making.
Personally, there are A LOT of professional salaries I'd defend before defending what university professors make.

Sorry, can't agree with you there DrF. There would be no athletic programs without the University, which was founded for higher education. I'm all for athletics as they can do a lot of good things for student athletes and fans alike but, given my druthers, I'd rather have well-paid professors educating our students than coaches making humongous amounts of money. It needn't be mutually exclusive thoughl. I see no reason why we cannot do both.

In all honesty, right now, I'd be much more impressed if I saw the University make a nice donation towards rebuilding the flooded infrastructure though I doubt that would happen in any universe.

Oh, I bet the decision has been made.. now whether he told Miles is a different story, but IMO he better have a decision already made. There is really only one decision to make.. fire him. Very simple one, regardless of the last 3 games, or 4 or 5 or 6.. whatever the end up playing!

Moos' statement actually said, it won't close until the end of the season. He didn't say he won't make a decision until then. :) sneeky, but that is how he worded it.

I've written much the same here over the years- if it ever gets (even more) toi the point where athletics is little more than a money-raking machine/minor league for athletics, I'd happily see universities returned to being solely academic institutions - Yeah - the academe vs athlete argument has always been there.... but coaches weren't making 10 mil a year either.

If I gave you the impression I'm anti-education, the reality is the exact opposite. My comment that you quoted simply meant that I'm not going to have a pity party for tenured professors because of the money big time college coaches make. Professor salaries dwarf those of secondary and elementary school teachers and their classroom lecture time is rarely more than two to three hours a week.

Anyone who questions the big money going to coaches like Saban only need to study the economic impact that National Championship programs have on the University, the home city, and the home State.

Trust me, if Frost brings a national championship in football back to Nebraska, the impact will be felt throughout the State and in the University's student enrollment and alumni donations.
