Basketball Coaching search..

Rumors from another board cite that Hoiberg's people have been contacted and there is mutual interest from him. I don't see it happening from what I've been told by someone who has spoken with some of Fred's relatives here in Nebraska.

"Tim Miles is a friend."

He also said and I quote

"What they didn’t understand is that the evolution of Nebraska volleyball was slow and deliberate. There were no quick fixes."

Not exactly true Terry. You started as a head coach in 1977 and NU was good from the start.

Prior to that was Pat Sullivan, who coached in 75-76. I guess you could call that the "down" years.

Terry Pettit - Wikipedia

AIAW/NCAA Tournament appearance

Another case of someone being blinded by personal loyalty, and extrapolating it to the professional realm. Pettit should just stay quiet about the situation, if that's all he can come up with after watching the sh!tshow that NU basketball has become..... :sad0020:

Yup I'm excited but nervous to see who moos can get. Hopefully he gets it right...
I'm with Chris on this one, very important hire, but a very challenging one imo. Moos will earn his oats with this hire imo.

I would love Hoiberg, but don't see it happening. If we are forced to go the small school route again, I'd be interested in looking at Otzelberger.

Maybe Nick Saban? He walks on water. A new, final challenge for him. Cross over to basketball and turn us into national champions.

Unless we get an up and comer from the small school route then we are again saying we don't care about Mens basketball. If we are serious about competing for the NCAA tourney every year we need to make a homerun hire.

I agree, but I have to wonder why we've had absolutely no homerun hires in like..... forever. Is it just money, or is it that Nebraska has become the place for careers to die.

RUMOR has it that Miles was not TO's first contact. I know it wasn't his only contact. If it is just money, then we need to throw some at this hire. Quite honestly I hope it is something as simple as that.

From my understanding it's always been about money. Football is king at Nebraska. They aren't going to pay the basketball coach as much as the football coach. Yes they want to be great in basketball but not if it means the football team won't be. It's often hard to balance both sports which is why more often than not a school is either really good in football or basketball. Typically not both at the same time. They also usually aren't bad in both at the same time either. We are currently bad in both (win/loss wise) that will change this season with the football team.

Anyway when Miles is canned it's going to be telling how serious the Athletic Dept really is about having a good basketball team by the coach they hire.

The more games we lose the lower my expectations are for a hire. After that lose to Michigan id settle for anyone with a pulse. If we lose in the same fashion to iowa and michigan state id settle for a cardboard cut out of larry brown.

Good and interesting points Suh.

agree, just making himself look foolish!

Craig Smith?
I think this is a very real possibility.

The names being bandied about are encouraging. While the message board rumor mill is what it is, more often than not there's somebody involved that actually does know what they're talking about. Just a few of the names I've heard mentioned:

Mark Turgeon
Fred Hoiberg
Bruce Pearl
Bruce Webber
Craig Smith

These names are a far cry from doc saddler or tim miles.

First time I've seen Pearls name. And a new one today I heard was Lon Kruger.
Was also wondering what this FBI investigation might do? If Bill Self collapses during a game like Roy and Coach K I gotta believe these guys know they are going to get hit hard and feigning an illness will give them an out to step down (Urban Meyer rule). And if some of these bluebloods would somehow miraculously get in trouble with NCAA it could lead to a huge coaching carousel.
Guess that is one thing about Miles that I appreciate is that he runs a clean program.

Lon Kruger> Heavens why- why would he leave OU? Even with their short slump this year- they just thumped KU.

And... he's 66

There is always a reason a good coach leaves a good gig......sometimes it's going home, sometimes it more money, sometimes it's the chance to prove oneself one last time, and sometimes it's.....well.....we don't like to think of those;)

EDIT: It just occurred to me that my post might appear to be insinuating that MR Kruger did something untoward. It was not my intent. Now there might be some other moves because of recent events, but I know nothing of any OU situation.
