Basketball Coaching search..

Oh, I bet the decision has been made.. now whether he told Miles is a different story, but IMO he better have a decision already made. There is really only one decision to make.. fire him. Very simple one, regardless of the last 3 games, or 4 or 5 or 6.. whatever the end up playing!

Moos' statement actually said, it won't close until the end of the season. He didn't say he won't make a decision until then. :) sneeky, but that is how he worded it.

I do believe it is already a done deal all right.

Sorry, can't agree with you there DrF. There would be no athletic programs without the University, which was founded for higher education. I'm all for athletics as they can do a lot of good things for student athletes and fans alike but, given my druthers, I'd rather have well-paid professors educating our students than coaches making humongous amounts of money. It needn't be mutually exclusive thoughl. I see no reason why we cannot do both.

In all honesty, right now, I'd be much more impressed if I saw the University make a nice donation towards rebuilding the flooded infrastructure though I doubt that would happen in any universe.
Don't feel too sorry for the College Professors. One of my son's recently got a PHD in finance. The school where he got the PHD offered him job with a $168,000 salary. For that he would have to teach 3 classes a semester. Most of them also write a book and force their students to buy it.

I get that Natty's do good things for the economics/universities. I just think that there needs to be a happy median between student athletics/acadamia and we're venturing way too close to the precipice for my comfort zone. Tuition is getting more and more expensive every year (that has nothing to do with the student athletics, I understand) but it is making it more and more difficult for lower income students to get a degree.

DrF, I agree with your statement (I think) about secondary and elementary teachers. When we were living in KS, a co-worker's wife was an elementary teacher. She had to even purchase her own copy paper for the xerox machine and made didly squat for her salary. We need great educators across the board and they all deserve to be adequately compensated. It's just getting to the point of ridiculousness with the amount of money that our coaches are paid, compared to what is paid on the academic side. Nebraska isn't there yet but it's a trend I'm not a fan of.

My oldest brother, who is not a fan of athletics period, is always fussing about what is done for student athletes. He swears that they have someone taking tests for them and he means at DONU. I always tell him that I was never in a class with a student athlete so I cannot hazzard a guess about that. I think that kids can pass tests without talking like an Einstein (or retain their regional dialect but he disagrees). I had a college instructor (JC level) who held me back after class once because I don't talk like I write. We had a long heart to heart and I finally convinced the dolt that it goes along with "Boys don't make passes at Girls who wear glasses" and that I learned a long time ago that if you use 20 syllabel words, no one wants to associate with you. My brother still doesn't grasp this concept but this is one thing I definitely hope he is wrong about. If I were ever to find out that it was true, I would swear off college athletics completely because that would prove, without a doubt, that our priorities are totally screwed up.

I hope the Fred H to NU rumor is true - but ultimately Moos needs to make a change. Miles has been given ample time to produce something.....he has not generated results. So let's move on - thanks for effort Tim - but I think ultimately he needs to go - he can be successful somewhere else (aka a non-Power 5 conference).

Miles has done a good job..a game or two over .500 for his career, graduates players, no NCAA dark cloud hanging around, but i think its time to take it to another level. If we get Fred Hoiberg that would be great. Frost football, Hoiberg basketball....................that is a dream come true!!!!!

I decided to check on Hoiberg. Definitely showed improvement with each year at Iowa St. I could care less if he had a bad record coaching a bunch of premadonas in the NBA. I remember him playing for Iowa St. A hard nosed old school type of player.

Would he seriously consider coming here and is a serious candidate?

I think it is time for this 'ol boy to eat some crow. It sounds like this rumor might have some pretty good legs. For my part, I said I would like him, but didn't think there was a shot in Hades.

Also, when SUH suggested we would pony up 4 mil a year, I thought.....Yeah right. Past experience has taught me though, if you don't want to be proven wrong you don't disagree with SUHnami......glad I kept my mouth shut here as these are numbers being thrown around as well.

If the Hoiberg thing works out, I'll be very glad to have been wrong.

No crow needing to be eaten Redfred. I didn't say we would pony up $4 mill, just that if we are SERIOUS about being a major player in DI mens basketball that we need to pony up the funds (of which we have) and go after the best coach out there.

If this is all true then I'm extremely excited about NU basketball for the first time in 25+ years.

Hey, I didn't think ADBM would get Hoiberg, either... happy to be wrong.

Gotcha.........sounds like those numbers could be a reality at any rate.

I'm a little frustrated at the criticism of Bill Moos for keeping 'poor Tim Miles' in the dark. He was quoted as saying he'd address Tim's status after the season. Last I checked, we're still playing.

What was Bill's alternative? Fire Miles after the B1G Tourney and either decline a NIT bid or have one of the assistant coaches coach the team in the tourney? How exactly is that a 'classier' alternative to what's going on now?

Getting fired sucks, there's no getting around it. And I like Tim Miles. But pardon me if I don't have a pity party because "Poor Tim" is trying to coach while rumors are flying around about his replacement.

Agreed.

I find many of the comments you reference likely come from those who have never managed or had to fire people in a large business/high salary situation.

Exactly! This is a big boys game, and Tim is getting big boy dollars. There seldom is a pleasant way to fire someone. It's not fun and it's painful for everyone.....but it's the price that is paid for being in a competitive environment.

To Tim's credit, I feel like he has handled it well. Most of the gnashing of teeth that I have heard is coming from tangential areas. I don't expect a "burn the AD" speech if Tim is indeed given his marching papers.

As for Moos slighting Tim by not pushing his face into every photo moment, I think Moos is doing it the way it should be............. Don't stand in the way. Don't be phony. Let Tim, and this team, have their day. Don't let the NIT surreptitiously know that we aren't interested because we are moving on, and we don't want anything dragging out........and we're not crazy about giving bonus checks to existing coaches. Let Tim develop his resume for his next job, and let the players display their talents.

From what I know, I'm just fine with the way this is being handled.

This gives Miles a chance to go out a winner. His performance during the Big Tournament and now could go a long way in his finding a new job and the salary he can command. It may be a good time to be looking for a job. I think the NCAA investigations will cost some coaches their jobs.

Thanks redfred. A most interesting read. I don't think ADBM makes near enough money, after reading this.

As far as the firing (potentially) of Tim Miles. The man has had 7 seasons to turn the program around and that has not happened. I have no heartburn with Miles being replaced. I would just have liked "those in the know" to keep their pie holes shut until after the seasonm, including playing in the NIT, had concluded.

We all know, from the firing of he who shall remain nameless, that Moos doesn't like to publicly make announcements regarding the retention/termination of his staff until the season has concluded. We also know that Moos keeps a notebook with "crib notes" about who is available for various positions at all times. Moos sounds like a man who doesn't like to get caught with his pants down.

I'm sure Miles knows that, to quote REO Speedwagon, "It's time for him to fly" -- it just seems like there is so much more speculation before he's even officially been fired than there was with the firing of the nameless coach/hiring of Frost. I know that 99.9999% of the posters here (myself included) would have come unglued had Moos not suceeded in bringing Scott Frost home. It was like the best kept non secret I've ever witnessed in my life.

Especially since the basketball team is involved in tournament play, it seems counterproductive for the rumor mills to be in such high gear. Moos isn't going to publicly admit anything until we are out of the NIT. Let the team enjoy it's time in the limelight without all the rumor and inuendo. It's a distraction and I'd rather the bb team be able to focus on the task at hand (advancing in the NIT) without all the white noise surrounding Miles firing/Hoiberg potential hire.

If you're hoping for new Nebraska Head Basketball Coach Fred Hoiberg, today was a good day. Why?

1 - Hoiberg was questioned (while watching the Michigan State game in Des Moines) about Nebraska and provided no hints. If he is coming to Lincoln, this is exactly the way you'd want him to respond. If he denied it or even gave hints, it raises more questions. His non-response had a quieting effect.
2 - Nothing surfaced today (like interest from other schools) that might refute or even challenge the Hoiberg to Nebraska story. Again, more quiet.
3 - The NCAA tournament was virtually the sole focus every basketball writer in America and should remain that way through the weekend. This means fewer stories about Moos, Nebrasketball, etc... and consequently, more quiet.

Nothing is more important in the Hoiberg to Nebraska sweepstakes right now (as everyone waits for the Husker to play out their season) than quiet.
