B1G about to have a "surprise" expansion.

Op-Ed: USC and UCLA won ugly when they defected to the Big Ten

Welcome to yet another episode of “Follow the Money,” this one all about the millions the Big Ten's TV deal allows it to parcel out among its member schools annually. By one estimate, the deal could be worth $1 billion in 2024, with a per-school take of more than $60 million on average. As opposed to a little more than $30 million offered by the Pac-12 in the last year before the pandemic. That extra $30 million-plus is a lot of "resources," as Jarmond put it, and UCLA wants you to know that its real motivation was altruistic, keeping “non-revenue” sports on campus. Uh-huh.

Lest we forget, where there are winners, there must be losers. Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, who first reported the conference-switch story, says he thinks it's the beginning of the end for major college football programs at Cal and Stanford in the Bay Area. "Fox and ESPN will pay for the football programs that generate ratings and are most likely to land in prime TV windows," Wilner said in a Q and A published in the Mercury News. "Neither Bay Area team clears those bars."

I am well-aware it could have just been hyperbole but there were some 'knowledgeable' pundits who were saying that with Texas and OU, the next SEC TV deal with ESPN could be worth $95 M per school.

Whatever figure the SEC's TV deal lands on, you can bet the next B1G deal -- with new schools USC and UCLA (and probably Notre Dame) -- will be even higher than the SEC's.

I realize that betting odds are all about reeling in chud money but some of those odds that are listed are hard to believe.

On the B1G side, the notion that Oregon has the same betting odds as Notre Dame is beyond bizarre. On the B1G side, I'd put Notre Dame as even money and give everybody else astronomical odds. Somebody had to be seriously drinking to even give odds for Kansas, Cincinnati, and Okie State, let alone give those programs better odds than North Carolina or Stanford. Bizarre. But hope springs eternal -- thus giving out betting odds for schools who have a snowball's chance of hell of getting an invite.

On the SEC side, the same betting odds for Clemson and Florida State??!? I'd put a lot better odds on Clemson being first to get an invite over everybody else. With the University of Florida already in the league, where is the value of adding Florida State at all, let alone being the next in?

I absolutely agree with your take on Clemson. But the Oregon and golden boners I think is based on how much they want to stay independent ( have at it dumb ass’s ) and how much the ducks can fill in if they do.
Personally I want the golden ones in because I think they will get there golden ass’s whipped more times then not. B1G difference in current schedules

All things being equal, I would expect ND to want to remain independent. But financially, there's a huge difference between what the Irish will be able to make if they join the B1G versus what they can make if they continue to stay independent and stick with their NBC TV contract.

And in this hypothetical, I don't see Oregon making it in regardless of what ND does.

UCLA and USC only made sense for football. Title IX and travel will bleed them in ways they cannot imagine unless they plan to remain PAC in minor sports.

Fotoball revenue (and to a much lesser extent Men's B-Ball revenue) are king. All other sports are afterthoughts. If you have to pay more for baseball to go to Ann Arbor, State College or Lincoln......it is just noise in the grand scheme of $$$. Big TV $$ from football covers that cost and much more - with assurance in a Super Conference your aren't going to get the rug pulled out from under you (like the Big 12 is experiencing with Texas and OU leaving - killing their revenue......although they appear to have done a better job trying to re-act than the Pac-12 did).

I think this is only going to bring more commercials to the games. Hard to watch a live game these days. With the NIL our players will look like NASCAR drivers with all the sponsored businesses plastered all over them

NIL deals will be allowed on Uniforms?
I hadn't heard that - additionally, NIL is a deal with the player, not the U, so they aren't buying space on "university property" right?

Dennis Dodd tweeted that the SEC is sticking with 16 teams for now -- which is not surprising to me. I think both the SEC and the B1G are happy to 'take a deep breath' after their latest acquisitions and stand pat...for now.

But with TV contracts for both conferences set to expire next year, I suspect there could be another announcement or two in 2023 that could influence the size of their new ESPN and Fox Sports deals.

Did anyone else cringe, just a bit, at the notion of players being "university property" or was it just me?
