B1G about to have a "surprise" expansion.

Notables left out:

• California

• Miami

• Pittsburgh

• Georgia Tech

• Boston College

• Syracuse

• Boise State

I don't see all those schools being left out. I assume Miami is the biggest TV draw but has other baggage (small school - bad attendance unless they are winning MNCs)
Cal, GA Tech and Pitt all have significant TV draw potential - especially GA Tech being IN ATL.

We'll see how it plays out.

Sorry to continue this non-stop posting but this stuff is fascinating to me. I think the SEC and B1G will use its clout to push for even bigger TV deals for themselves by creating their own Big Dawg alliance and declaring their own national championship playoff and inter-conference bowl games.

If this happens -- and I'm convinced it will -- there will be a tremendous push by all the other schools in all the other conferences to be a part of this new Big Boy CFB League by being invited to either the SEC or the B1G.

So depending on whether these two superconferences each expand by two or more....here's my off-the-cuff reaction to which programs have the best chances of getting invites:

The "Sure Thing" List: Notre Dame (B1G) and Clemson (SEC)
The "Good Shot" List: Stanford (B1G) and Florida State (SEC)
The "Might still have a Shot" List: North Carolina, Virginia, Texas Tech, Cal
The "Longshot Possibility" List: Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Arizona St., Virginia Tech, Miami, Iowa State, Pitt
I think you are smoking the wacky tabacky if you think Texas Tech or Cal get invited before Miami or Vtech or Oregon.

For the record, I personally believe neither Tech nor Cal will get in.

I mentioned them ONLY because -- like most things in Higher Education -- these decisions often have political components to them. The State systems in Texas and California are genuine Big Dawgs and would like to see Tech with UT and Cal-Berkeley with UCLA. But FWIW, I don't believe Miami or Vtech will get an invite either. Same with Oregon but who knows what Phil Knight might be able to do to bolster the Ducks' case.

But who knows? A case might get made that the Big Two will expand bigger than I anticipate. Utimately, the size of the B1G-SEC alliance will be influenced by the size of the conference playoff structure that will lead to either a 'Final Four' a national championship game.

I have a very reliable source that tells me there are more changes forthcoming. As you might guess I can't share them here out of respect for my friend, as he swore me to secrecy, but you are going to be shocked at what else takes place.

If the new entries are not among the following......

Notre Dame
Stanford
Oregon
North Carolina

......I'll be pretty surprised.

What I do think is what the Big will do is to expand its footprint and go for the TV market, so that does open the door for someone from Florida, Texas, or Arizona. I'm not sure the conference is in a hurry, and are most likely willing to wait and see what ND does, so unless someone is looking to get tied into an entangling alliance that they most likely want eventually, I suspect they'll see how the cards are being played out. One thing is for sure, geographical proximity is out the window now.

Would Nebraska get in the B1G today had they stayed in the XII? Maybe... probably... not.
I was going to give @Mike Corgan a 'like' for this ^^^^ -- then realized how that would look.

Given how we've treated our brand since Bo's famous "Nebraska is back!" comment in the aftermath our big bowl game blowout win that occurred a few months before our invite, me thinketh Mike speaketh the truth.

Holy Moley, New Mexico is getting a B1G invite???!!?

As long as our sometimes renegade coach doesn't get us kicked out we should be fine now.....thank God. I'd be pretty nervous if we were in, say, Iowa State's, K-State's, or Baylor's shoes right now.

With all due respect to Husker99 and the NM State Aggies, as we like to say in Burque "Everyone's a Lobo WOOF WOOF WOOF!" New Mexico would be a top shelf get for sure. All the history that comes with that program would be hard to match. I mean you have Brian Urlacher, you have Don Perkins back in the 60s, and....you know....

On a serious note. Speaking of Don Perkins. He recently passed away and will be missed by the entire state of NM. I had the honor of getting to know him on a personal level through my place of employment and have to say he is one of the most dignified, honorable human beings I have ever met. Some of you old timers may remember him as a great running back for the Cowboys back in the 60s. His grandson played high school basketball with my nephew, and we would see him frequently at the gym. It's not often in life we meet someone we truly admire. Mr. Perkins was that man. RIP.

Surprising would be the Texas and Oklahoma backing out of the SEC and coming to the Big 10 and even that wouldn't surprise me in this day and age.

Conference realignment rumors: Phil Knight wants Oregon in the Big Ten

Canzano: Oregon Ducks make a wish list, while Pac-12 rallies behind scenes

Former Fox Sports Network president Bob Thompson told me last week that he estimated the Pac-12’s next media rights contract would command $500 million a year before the defection. With the Los Angeles’ television market gone, Thompson says the Pac-12’s media value is reduced to $300 million a year.

That appears to be a 40-percent wholesale discount. But it pencils out to a 28 percent reduction, per university, given that the $300 million would now be split only 10 ways ($30 million each) vs. $500 million being split 12 ways ($41.6 million each).

Screw Oregon. Just to spite them.

Go the full court Regional Route. Pick up Pittsburgh, Cali, Hawaii, BYU, Stanford, Washington, Utah, Arizona, Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Virgina, Virginia Tech, and Duke. Atlantic Coast versus Rust Belt, Heartland versus Wacky West. Push for 8 month season capped off with conference championship in May just to piss off the SEC and rest of D1A. If they want to play for the national championship then they'll adjust their season to match or the B1G dominates TV. Ultimately nobody will remember the SEC champion by then.

Who wouldn't want to play in a league with winter season matchups in Hawaii, California, and the nicest areas of the South? The B1G can focus on a warm, southern climate slant in the winter and a cooler, northern slant for the fall and spring. Up through November you can still play other D1A teams in out of conference matchups. Honestly, you keep the feel of bowl tradition alive as much as possible. Play on neutral fields during a psuedi 'bowl season' that focuses on rivalry games that draw national televsion audiences. Vegas would love it.

If Nebraska hadn’t joined the Big 10 (genius move in hindsight), I bet we would have fell to the SEC in all of this. Ultimately, I would prefer to be there anyway, but can’t be upset with where we are at all things considered.

The SEC-Big Ten battle for college football supremacy is just beginning

The British fleet had the Spanish Armada. The United States had the Soviet Union. The Beatles had the Rolling Stones. Now the SEC has the Big Ten.

For others in the world of college sports, hearing that hurts. The truth always does.

Just as there were other navies, other nations and other rock bands, ultimately everyone else in the room, no matter who they are or what they've done or what they still might do, they all end up standing against the walls and watching who really matters do what really matters.

Because there are only two players in a chess match. And apologies for the cliché, but there are only two true chess masters in today's collegiate athletics, two superpowers with the fanciest playing pieces, specifically Oklahoma and Texas and now UCLA and USC. The rest are playing checkers. They might have some nice pieces here and there, but they don't have a whole set.

Only the Big Ten and SEC do.
