** When I went to post this in the other thread, I discovered SOC had already locked it. I don't want to be a rule-breaker, but I thought the following observation was worth sharing: **

So far, all we have is the opinion of so called "experts".
To be fair, we do have clear-cut, damning evidence that the United States is handling it worse than any other developed nation. Why is that?

Around Lincoln, most everybody (with a few notable exceptions) seems to be good about wearing masks in public. A few weeks ago, Mrs Fumble and I went to Colorado and -- again -- everybody seemed to be good about mask wearing. I thought perhaps we'd finally gotten our act together as a country.

But then this weekend, the Mrs and I drove up to Lake Okoboji, Iowa for a get-together with her brother and wife and we were literally stunned to see that nobody was wearing masks, including inside the restaurants, bars, and gas stations there -- and there were A LOT of people in town for the weekend. Hell, the waitresses in some of these dining places weren't even wearing masks. We all were really taken aback. Fortunately, we found a place to dine outside on Friday night and last night we ordered take-out pizza.

Until this nation takes this pandemic seriously, this virus isn't going to go away. When I see the kind of reckless behavior that was on display in Okoboji this weekend, I have a hard time believing anybody is going to finish a football season this Fall -- or start one next Spring.

As, I am sure most everyone is aware, the original thread I locked was one of those that had much going on and someone found the line and straddled it. Then they fell over that line and into the no go zone. We have done a fairly decent job of staying out of politics lately but when someone crosses it we will take action. So that thread was locked. We will closely monitor this one. I didn't feel like getting into anything with anyone tonight so I choose to lock the thread instead of warn anyone. Call it my go to church Sunday free pass day.

Kinda why we have not gone on vacation this year. I don't want to get into a fight with someone because I want to wear a mask. So I guess I will stay home and go fishing. I am also working on other projects I have. Some of the rural area's, IMO, might look at me with disdain because of my mask. That perception will affect those that want to go out but don't want to be hassled. Therefore, we are in perpetual limbo as a country. Some will go out and some will not. But the some still is not enough to get the full economy pumping like it was or could be.

I defend the 1st Amendment and exercise the 2nd. I think censorship in any capacity is very Un-American. Most of these threads fizzle out on their own. What’s the worst that can happen? Someone gets their feelings hurt? There are a lot of people on here with better outlooks, perspectives, and intuition than any other place I post. If I need a break...Want to know the truth...I talk to my Old Man that restores old cars in Nebraska.

Kind of how I feel about this place.

My 2 cents.

More selective censorship? If I argue with what Fumble posted, do I get a warning and the thread gets locked? Is it ok to post in this thread ONLY if we agree with the one sided viewpoint? Legit questions.

1. My recreation this year has been riding my bike. Generally I don't have to get close to many people so I don't wear a mask - but occasionally the trail can get pretty busy. But I figure if people are feeling well enough to walk, run, bike my risk is really small. I don't stop to chat for sure. Just in case I have a mask in my seat pack if I have a break down or just decide to stop and take in a nice day. Our county is in pretty good shape in terms of positivity and new cases.
2. The number of people on Facebook that post pictures of themselves doing exactly what Fumble described is shocking IMHO. One friend of mine took his daughter out to eat as they dropped her off at college. Place is packed - no one has masks on........smh........thanks for documenting you bad decision making for everyone to see.

Legit answer: There is nothing political about following the advice of pandemic coronavirus experts.

You’ve got people totally disregarding the advice and calling it “one-sided” who in their next breath grouse about no college football.

This wouldn't be nearly as contentious if there was a clearly stated realistic goal. I have a friend on Facebook that posts about masks 4 or 5 times a day, so I finally asked him when will it be safe to not have everyone wearing masks? He responded with "when there isn't a single case in the country". I wasn't going to get into it so I left it alone, but how can anyone think that is a reasonable or necessary goal?

The typical Mom ‘last word when dropping son or daughter off at college’ still applies: MAKE GOOD CHOICES! :)

Just remember, this place is meant to be about Husker athletics, not politics. If you keep that in mind we will be fine. There are many, many places on the internet you can go and talk about left, right, etc. It has been our mission to keep that to a minimum here. We let it get out of hand a few years ago, and lost many members. We are not going to make the same mistake again.

I read your experience, now here's mine (which I posted two weeks ago).

I travel everywhere for work. Plane, rental car, hotel, work. Every where I go I see people wearing masks. It is rare to see someone not wearing one. In restaurants, people wear masks to enter and to exit and while there are seated more than 6' apart (table in-between removed or closed). Yet, the virus was spreading. Why? This bug is here to stay. Sorry. You will now have cough and cold, flu and Covid seasons. Are you going to shut your life down and wear a mask now and until the end of time?

And if you don't think the Covid viewpoint is spilt along political viewpoints, you are naïve.

For quite a few years leading up to this pandemic I would see Asian Americans wearing face masks in airports or other public places. I recall thinking at the time they were germophobic.

I suspect that one of the lingering side-effects after we finally put Covid-19 in our rear view mirror is that some folks will always wear them in public from now on.

But so what? I'd rather see someone still wearing a mask after the pandemic is over than to still see a whole bunch of people without masks while we're still in the midst of it.

There won't be a covid season. As this virus mutates, it becomes less and less virulent. Eventually it will just be another strain of the common cold.

Its a cultural thing, and its fine. Personally I do think there is a form of dehumanization that comes with wearing a mask so I hope people don't wear them if it isn't necessary or warranted.

Because there are clearly lots of places in this country (I pointed one out in the OP) where people are NOT wearing masks or social distancing.
And if you don't think the Covid viewpoint is spilt along political viewpoints, you are naïve.
Once upon a time that might have been the case.

But our President has now been quoted as saying that wearing masks is "the patriotic thing to do." For the umpteen time, this ain't about politics, it's about public health!

Even McConnell says you should wear a mask.......not a political discussion unless you want to make it one.

We must clarify the purpose of the mask.

Unless you are wearing a N-95 mask, the purpose of the mask is to protect OTHER PEOPLE from being infected by your disease. The mask you wear does not protect you.

So when I see people not wearing a mask it conveys my perception of them. They don't care if they infect you. I try to stay more than 6 feet away from them if I can.

Very fair; and not a harsh request, either.

There's a saying that we would use in the military, especially if someone is going to make a decision that might be controversial.

"Do what your career can handle."

If people die because you were the cause of their death...then the "blood" will be on your hands, and conscience.

The issue is this, and it isn't political. There is NO science based reason for the BigTen not to field football and basketball teams this fall and winter. The risk to young, healthy athletes is less than the risk of walking across "O" street on Saturday afternoon. I just read an article indicating that EVERY BigTen athletic director wanted to proceed with a football season with precautions in place for the players and the fans. Kevin Warren pushed his closing the conference agenda through on the university presidents, who couldn't care less about sports teams. Kevin Warren was hired to oversee sports in the BigTen, not kill them. And not to mention that he is a hypocrite of the first order if he is fine with his son playing football at Mississippi State this fall.

My comments are about sports and specifically Nebraska football. Keep your political views out of it. I DON'T care.
