I've read about Okoboji, maybe in the last week and a half. It is about the worst place in IA to go as it's big time partying and loose with masks.
THANKS, UENTH. NOW YOU TELL ME!!!!! :) ;)

Wish we would have known that fact before we all decided to have a family get-together there. We were really taken aback by what we saw. It was kind of like the videos we've all seen on the nightly news of tons of young people packed together partying without masks in places like Arkansas, Texas, and Florida. I just wasn't expecting to see it in Northern Iowa.

Sorry, I didn't know you were headed there or I would have said something. I was stunned as I thought it was a sleepy, little town that catered to families, etc. Blew me away!

My understanding about message boards. We are here at the invitation of the owners. It is their house, their rules. If we don't like their rules, then we don't let the screen door hit us .... on our way out. Same rules apply in my brick and mortar store. You are there at my invitation. I do not tolerate any political discourse or any political signs, buttons, articles of clothing. Leave it in your car or do not enter my establishment. Period, no discussion. My house (rather business), my rules.

As long as those rules are applied evenly. Many times they are not.

I've noticed that as well. Many times, I think that comments should be stricken because they are very personal and insulting but they are still there for Gawd and everyone to continue to peruse.

Speaking only for myself, I'm not able to read every thread, let alone every post. So I do the best I can.

Assuming we're all "of a certain age", if someone posts something out-of-bounds, they likely sense it. imo, anyway.

There are times when I wonder if posts are made purely to test the boundaries. I may be wrong, b/c that would be pretty adolescent.

We ask folks to self-police. No poli, no personal attacks, etc, etc...not sure why it doesn't work better...

I think it did work very well until COVID came along. COVID has changed the landscape on message boards and in communities, for better or worse.

If you're correct, then decorum (at least as it's defined on the this board) might be cast aside b/c we're in a collectively tough spot. That's too bad.

I think I understand that you're not trying to rationalize, just offering an explanation.

Thx, U.

I think that, by and large, most posters most of the time are still trying to play by the rules. It's just the occasional thread seems to stir posters up from time to time.

Y'all just need to keep on doing what you're doing and lock the threads down when they get too contentious.

I'm trying to back out of them before that happens but I admit that it does get under my skin when my political affiliation is spit out by some folks like it's a dirty word or I'm a lesser being or WTF ever that they are saying. For the most part, I let it roll off my back but sometimes, ARGHHHH

Do you not talk to your B-in-Law/Sister? Why didn't they warn you from coming?

Fumble I just moved from the Cedar Rapid area last year to Rochester MN - those 2008 flood were terrible - in part because it closed so many roads and threatened the well system for fresh water. Not to mention all the damaged homes and businesses.
We had a derecho just north of Cedar Rapids (where I lived) in 2012 - my house escaped damaged but it destroyed my wood fence and damaged just about every house and tree in the neighborhood. Many spots north of us had it much worse - F1 tornado type damage over a large area. The corn got blown over - but it was still pretty early in the season so 80% of it came back. What I learned is those derechos are extremely dangerous and everyone gets a taste of the damage. If they say take cover - TAKE COVER.
Cedar Rapids got hit with an even stronger version 2 weeks ago. I would love to know if the fence at my old house got blown down again but due to the power outages and such I have not gotten an update from anyone in the old 'hood' on how bad they got hit. Some of my old co-workers have shared pics - bad scene. How this was not national news I have no idea.

I understand what you're saying but it doesn't matter what you personally believe if the majority of people in this country are scared to death about one of their family members catching it -- especially when there isn't a 'cure' or a vaccine.

It's that fear -- not the virus itself -- that put over 15 million Americans out of work and has crippled the travel, entertainment, non-fast food, health club, and sports industries. As long as the fear is real, you can quote statistics up the ying-yang and it's not going to change the public's behavior.

By taking the necessarily precautions to minimize the risks, we speed up the economic recovery. As we saw this spring, forcing the economy to open early hurt more than helped because the virus numbers went way up -- and so did the public's fear -- which, in many states, had us scrambling to reverse course on the whole reopening thing.
I agree with you. It is based on a lot of fear. Perception becomes reality, and I realize that is where we are at as a country right now. In the end, we have to deal with the current perception, fear, etc, or whatever is driving people's behavior. Just don't tell me it's based on consistency, "settled science", stats, or data, because that is simply not true......

Just remember, this place is meant to be about Husker athletics, not politics. If you keep that in mind we will be fine. There are many, many places on the internet you can go and talk about left, right, etc. It has been our mission to keep that to a minimum here. We let it get out of hand a few years ago, and lost many members. We are not going to make the same mistake again.

I agree...But at the same time sports society let them coexist in a BIG way. So now...Here you have it on here. Americans use sports to release...Don’t be mad at the little people showing their frustration on bad leadership that is clearly political. What else are we going to talk about on here right now? Football? Nope that got Canceled.

My brother-in-law's house still doesn't have electricity. Fortunately he has his own generator. He lives in a farm house-ish acreage that's about 10-12 blocks west of the four line that goes through town. Their home was surrounded by a forest of trees but they said the storm took out 90% of them.
How this was not national news I have no idea.
I teased them by showing them some tweets posted by an online poker friend of mine who is also one of those crazy Q conspiracy believers. Apparently the wind storm and the lack of national news was ...(drumroll)...part of a Deep State Government plot. :)

Alright, Alright, back on topic please. Wait what was the original topic of this thread?? We get to far up this creek we lose the fish and the paddle.

Truth be told, there are people that don't want it to go away. Fear and anxiety is addictive and its easier to justify it when there is a clear target to blame. Covid is now a comfortable threat.

I'm calling bs on that one. I don't know of ANYONE who finds COVID-19 a comfortable threat, nor do I know ANYONE who doesn't want COVID-19 to go away.

I'm already pissed off about losing the season, I sure as heck don't want -- and certainly don't need -- to raise my blood pressure further by arguing with some of my BHF buddies about this virus thing.

But for the life of me, I can't understand why so many people choose to ignore the fact that the United States has handled its response to the coronavirus worse than every other developed country.

Back in March, we were told that the best case scenario if we did everything right there would be between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans that die from this by September. That means we are smack dab in the middle of our best case scenario.
