Who still has confidence in this staff?

It's excuse making. If you point it out you'll get the argument that it can't be the coaching staff because they went 13-0 at UCF so they must be infallible. They will also contradict themselves and say at the same time that UCF had way better players than Nebraska does now so you also can't fault the coaching staff at all now because they need better players. It's a two faced circular rationalization.
No, its called potential and reality. We know ucf would kick this teams butt, period, if coached by the same staff both sides, or, you can try to pull for the Huskers here if you choose.
Those players playing now for ucf are primarily SF guys, seems to have transitioned well under a new staff, but our staff, they must be bad right?
So, its a thoughtful argument, not a circular one.

So, a ucf led by SF team beats a Nebraska led by SF team. Wheres the circle?

Key,every year.
He started with an in place system he recruited to,not someone else, and arguably, by the time he took the reigns, he'd had much more impact than SF has had as HC in year two.
So, contextually, its not apples to apples,
Nope, didn't mean to imply that. But TO developed players that weren't 5 star recruits, etc.

I understand Frost needs players that fit his schemes. I just think some of these "not his players" should be worth developing. It seems as though Frost is just blew off all of the Riley players, many of whom were 3 and 4 star recruits. It is just unfathomable to me that we could only win 5 games this year and that the accepted excuse is because of talent level sucking and Frost not having his players.

My question is how long is this excuse valid? If I hear that after next season, I will definitely be beating my head against the wall. To me the lack of "his" players should have been what kept us from 8+ wins not getting from 5 to 8 wins. And we're damn lucky that we got 5 wins. Could easily have been 4 or less.

But again, every year was used, not that I disagree, just pointing out that teams today that develope well dont or cant plug n play, they too dont get those guys, and have quite a few upper classmen, and their entire roster has been on that same train, not so under these conditions with this staff.
So, how long would it take say, Ferentz to come into an entirely abused messed up system and turn it around?
I use Ferentz, because he has even more experience than TO did at the time, and certainly more than anyone on SFs staff save for Verdu.
Start by creating a new standards and approach with SnC, then deal with huge attrition, and older remaining players who'd been coached by several other coaches in many instances.

I guess my question to you should be,looking at everything we do know, not that as fans we are privy to much of what's taking place, how long do you think things start turning around?
And, at least in my question,I'm not expecting a ucf type either.

Definitely can regain confidence in him but he has to look at himself as much as he does his players and fellow coaches. I believe he’s coaching scared to lose (since coming to Lincoln he’s somehow developed a fear of failure). Maybe he doesn’t want to let TO down or something.

On play calling, I’ve yet to speak to a Husker fan who understands why he keeps running those swing passes and screen passes, although the screen passes worked much better when it wasn’t Martinez running the offense. It’s almost as if he’s trying to emulate TO hammering the run game at our opponents knowing it would eventually wear them down and those plays would start being incredibly successful. Well that doesn’t work with swing passes!

Let me give you me take on why Frost keeps calling those sideline or swing passes. Keep in mind I have no real inside knowledge of Frost's scheme or his specific X's and O's, this is merely my opinion on why I think Frost does what he does:

Those swing passes/throws to the sideline serve the same function as Iso runs between the 1 and 2 holes, the difference being the players being affected on defense.

When Tom Osborne would run Iso, the goal was always always to get the LBs to come up to stuff the run and then pick his spots to play-action pass over their heads. These swing passes serve the same function, but the effect is on the free and strong safety. The goal is to run these swing passes and get the secondary to come up on these in anticipation of making a great defensive play, but instead the pass goes over the top to a wide open WR because the secondary has a bust in their coverage. Also, these swing passes are (usually) safe throws that can act as an extension of a running game. The key concept is to get the defense running laterally to try and alter their alignment making opening holes for running backs wider and easier to find/run through. That's the "why" of running these swing passes.

This concept was wildly successful at Oregon and UCF but for different reasons. It was so effective at Oregon because the Ducks were the team that for the most part, brought full time, uptempo offense to P5 college football and just about every team really wasn't ready for it. At UCF, defenders aren't maybe as good (theoretically) as the are on a team in a P5 conference. There is a wider discrepancy in talent so exploiting that is easier.

At Nebraska, Frost has two things going against him: 1) Everybody knows Oregon's concepts and have caught up to them, and 2) There is a much higher level of physicality in the BIG than there ever was at UCF or even in the Pac 12. When opponents know your schemes and concepts, but you still execute, you're going to have a great team. When opponents hone in on what you're doing, and you're having trouble executing, you get Nebraska in 2019.

Getting back to the swing passes, in this poster's estimation the problem is not that we're running swing passes, but the we're running too many of them and not doing enough intermediate throwing (7-12 yards) downfield.

The bulk of the offense I've seen from Nebraska this season is:

1. Inside Zone
2. Outside Zone
3. Swing Passes
4. QB Runs

I'd need to look at the actual numbers to confirm, but based off of what I have seen, we don't throw the ball downfield nearly enough. Is that because Adrian Martinez can't see the field well enough to make those plays? Is he hurt as Damon Benning said? Is/are there distractions? Those are answers I don't have. But what I do know is that Frost may have to take a long hard look at some of his schemes and do some real analysis as to whether they are worth keeping.

Not according to recruiting class rankings but OK let's accept your premise. So are you saying that the coaching doesn't matter at all then? We got Scott Frost and his staff because he and his staff are better coaches than Mike Riley and his staff right? Shouldn't they then be able to take the same Mike Riley players, and some of their own, and show some improvement? Wouldn't it be a disappointment if they didn't?

The problem with OUR swing passes vs. everyone else that runs them is.....unless you throw the ball immediately, it gives the D time to react. That's why Nebraska is only successful on them 10% of the time.

GET RID OF THE DAMN BALL!

Edit: it's not that it can't work, but watching a lot of other teams run it, they hit the guy while he is still in motion. I don't see that as much with NU

And havnt we seen improvement? Instead of getting blown out by many teams, its only a few.
Instead of being out of games,or,never being in them for more than a half, we are in them, but for miscues, not concept and success, but in the end, miscues determine Ws and Ls, but at least that means were even, which we obviously weren't before. Or the old, whoever turns the ball over.
We can run on these teams, we couldnt under MR.

MR had a very nice D front, he had Reilly,Jordan,DPE and ziggy and Jano, and I havnt forgotten how we were lacking in talent then.
Now, name the guys on this team? Last year and this year?
So, getting a guy claiming to be able to do more with less, and actually having a guy doing more with less isnt better?

I dont argue that at all. I think he will have 5 years minimum but yep I even think next year should be a "get to a good bowl" year. I think we should be shooting for a minimum of 8 wins next year and by year 4 we should be challenging for a shot at the CCG.

I mostly concur 84. Although in year three, I think 7 wins has to be the expectations.

Now, as far as recruiting goes, besides AM and Mills and Wandale, name those MR players equivalent?
It's taking longer than wanted or expected folks, but to a man, it's going in the right direction, something not everyone in the know said with other staffs, plus many who were silent out of respect.

Yea, at least 7.
I know next years schedule is much tougher, but thats only another thing we need to overcome.
The iowas of the world get buffetted by their schedules, we need to go beyond that as well.

And finally, after taking Saturday "off" to process what I saw against Iowa, I have to be honest and say the Iowa game shook the confidence I have in this staff.

That being said, where does coaching end and bad decision making begin on the players part begin? If the players continual bad decisions aren't corrected, either on the field through their own improvement or by being benched, then what incentive does any other player at any other positional group have to make good decisions? Because I'll tell you, and I'm sure most of you know this, but one thing that'll tear a team apart faster than anything else is if there are different rules for people within the team. If AM is allowed to play so poorly, to continue to make such mind-numbing, head-scratching, what the bloody f was that types of plays, and he doesn't see the bench, it makes a huge rift.

I don't know what is going on inside that Nebraska locker room. But what I see is a team that is suffering because our starting QB either won't, or can't, make the key decisive decisions he needs to. All season AM has been hesitant and indecisive. I'm made multiple comments that for someone who weighs 220 pounds, honestly he runs like we weighs 98 pounds and it is baffling as to why. Complicating this is the fact that at times, he's incredibly decisive and when he is, great things happen. The problem is, know one knows when Mr. Decisive is going to show up, and it's even a bigger question as to how long he'll stay.

If it's totally on him, I guess he doesn't need assistants.

The 3-4 sux azz for one, IMO, and Chins didn't put ANY pressure on Stanley all frigging game for two, and DeWitt's STs is the worst NU has had in God knows how long.

That time management thing people want to blame SF on was all AM for going out of bounds.

What SF mostly needs to own is not playing McCaffrey.

SF gambles on 4th downs when he's within FG range, he should gamble with going with a guy that doesn't hesitate to take action. That's not AM; he hangs onto the ball, and hangs onto the ball....next thing you know, it's 2nd and 12/14/17, whatever.

The other thing SF should have done at a minimum, and that was get our asses out of our deep end to at least the 30-40 to turn field advantage back to us after punts.

But it's not ALL on SF.
You cant really say that McCaffrey wouldnt do the same thing. He wasnt asked to pass in the one game he got real playing time. What did he throw 2 passes? And then against Iowa his option was easy as JD didnt have anyone within 15 yards of him. His second play he held on to the ball, and held on to the ball etc and scrambled for a 2 yard gain. Hard to judge what would have happened off of two plays.

I dont simply because we should win our first 7 games. No reason we cant pick up 1 win in our last 5 games.
I don't see how you can assume wins next year with what we saw this year. Cincy particularly will be a tough game and this year we lost to Purdue without Rondale Moore. Wish I could think that positive at the moment.

Well I do tend to be more on the optimistic side of most things. I just dont see how being negative all the time accomplishes anything.

Osborne was largely responsible for acquiring that National Championship level talent before he became head coach. He also, as an assistant, made that offense into what it was. When he took over, it was almost as much his team as it was Devaneys. Osborne made that team and he owned it immediately. He recognized when players were struggling and replaced them when needed, no matter who they were or what the situation. And he changed both offensive identity (1981) and defensive identity (1992) that resulted in one of the most dominant runs in sports history.

He may have just gotten lucky, or maybe he was just a great leader. From what I witnessed, I tend to believe the latter.

Whether or not he was largely responsible for that talent he still inherited that talent. Let's goto Solich. He inherited National Championship level talent and couldn't keep them coming in. Once TO's recruits were gone, so was that level of talent.

Heres what I'm seeing, first, there aint no herbie the love bug, where a good ol volkswagon beetle is putting the whuppin down on nascar cars, so, you either inherit nascar type players or its la la land herbie types, with hope .
Second, honesty.
If you dont like it,don't listen.
Does anyone suspect we might be hearing truth instead of coach speak? Will that make everyone feel better then? Should a coach say, yes,our little herbies should crush those nasty nascars, but I wasnt driving the car good enough?
If so, carry on.

Huh?
