Who still has confidence in this staff?

And with Osborne it took him a period of years to admit what he was doing wasn't working. This happened about 3 times during his 25 year coaching stint. He had a certain amount of ego as well. Where do you think Frost gets it from? TO, Walsh, Parcells, Bellichick, etc. Every coach has an ego of some sort. Osborne was more stubborn than anything. I went to school at UNL from '89- '94 and remember being frustrated with him too about him calling the same damn play over and over and it not working. Drove me fricking bananas. Then when he gets a better defense and the QB of a lifetime, those plays start to work later in the game.

Your comments about TO are quite true; however you need to add some caveats that don't apply to HCSF at this point. TO was HC of DONU for 25 years. In that span of 25 years, he never had less than a 9 win season and he took us to a Bowl Game every single year. In SF's 2 year tenure as HC of DONU, he's had a 4 win season and a 5 win season. We didn't go bowling last year and, barring a miracle, we ain't going bowling again this year. The lack of a bowl game is fine with me as we don't deserve it. I know, I know, the team needs the extra practices. Sorry, they just don't deserve the dubious honor of going to a low tier bowl, IMO.

Yes, TO reinvented his coaching style several times over the years. He managed to do it while still winning a minimum of 9 games and taking his team to a Bowl Game. I'm sorry, there's just no room for comparison between the two.

I really don't want to hear any more about the players he inherited. Frost needed to put his big boy pants on and make due with what he had. Yippers, he should recruit for the style he wants to play in the future but he was trying to put square pegs in a round hole and it just didn't work. Better to win using the talent and style they can play in, while planning on going forward in a new direction. Based on the comments here and what I hear around GI, SF has burned up a whole lot of good will. Should his win/loss record improve, people have short memories. If it doesn't, the calls for his head will be loud and long. That would be a darn shame. I think Frost could be a good fit in the long term, we were damn spoiled over the Devaney/Osborne years and Husker Nation is damn impatient.

Whether you want to hear it or not still doesn't make it any less true. Osborne inherited National Championship level talent. Which is why he was able to maintain no less than 9 win seasons. Also made it much easier to change his offensive philosophy and then later on his defensive philosophy. Frost didn't and doesn't have that same luxury.

Nope, but the constant remarks he makes dogging Riley's players have gotten exceedingly tiresome. I cannot imagine a universe where TO would have publicly made statements like that.

That was the point I was trying to make. He needed to play with the players he had, make the best of it and move on. I'm sure the players were reacting to some of his remarks. Human nature and all. It may or may not have cost us games -- we'll never know. I just know in all the collegiate management classes I took (that was my major, along with computer science), they all stressed that type of behavior/remarks as the wrong way to motivate employees. I said in another post that is one of the most important things Frost needs to work on.

Osborne was largely responsible for acquiring that National Championship level talent before he became head coach. He also, as an assistant, made that offense into what it was. When he took over, it was almost as much his team as it was Devaneys. Osborne made that team and he owned it immediately. He recognized when players were struggling and replaced them when needed, no matter who they were or what the situation. And he changed both offensive identity (1981) and defensive identity (1992) that resulted in one of the most dominant runs in sports history.

He may have just gotten lucky, or maybe he was just a great leader. From what I witnessed, I tend to believe the latter.

Thanks. I was trying to formulate my thoughts. You did a much better job of posting what I was thinking than I would have.

I like that comment. It's alluding to the Harry S Truman philosophy -- "The buck stops here. I was thinking last night that every time SF is pointing to lack of talent or "not his players" or mistakes that there are 4 fingers pointing at him. As I said in an earlier post, there are mistakes enough to go around but the bottom line is HE and he alone is the head coach. If he doesn't like what is happening on the field, it is on him to fix it. I prefer that he do it without denigrating the Riley players. If I was one of "his" (SF's) players, at this point, I would be thinking "Man, is Coach gonna publicly dog me if I don't meet his expectations." That oftentimes causes people to make mistakes or play tentatively and so he may find the opposite of what he wants to happen playing out on the field. Course I may be full of Baby Poop too. Time will tell.

I'll feel better when they start walking the walk. But I was supportive of MR until the end, and the one thing that I don't want to see happen to SF that I saw with BC, Bo, and MR, and that was issues with the assistants that were held on beyond their worth, because they were "friends".

I hope they prove us wrong that believe that. But they need to start walking the walk.

I love Jason Peter for what he did for Nebraska and the intensity be brought, but I'm not doing the "trust me" thing anymore. That ship sailed after 4-8 and 5-7.

It’s been almost 20 years of “just wait till next year.” I’m tired of that crap too. Frost and Co. need to talk less and win more.

Heres what I'm seeing, first, there aint no herbie the love bug, where a good ol volkswagon beetle is putting the whuppin down on nascar cars, so, you either inherit nascar type players or its la la land herbie types, with hope .
Second, honesty.
If you dont like it,don't listen.
Does anyone suspect we might be hearing truth instead of coach speak? Will that make everyone feel better then? Should a coach say, yes,our little herbies should crush those nasty nascars, but I wasnt driving the car good enough?
If so, carry on.

Herbie didn’t lose the Iowa game. The pit crew did.

If you want to demotivate those who work or play under you go ahead and say stuff like that yes.

TO didn't have uber talented players every year. A lot of those players were just corn fed kids from Nebraska who loved their state and playing for the Huskers. TO developed them and they responded to his style by playing their hearts out and way over their talent level in a lot of cases.

To me it's a bs argument to say that nothing is going to change until Frost gets enough talent to implement his system. Crikey, 20 years from now we can still be waiting for that ship to dock. I'd bet dollars to donuts that TO didn't always have the players that he had hoped for. He knew how to develop and motivate and that was the difference maker and why we always just seemed to "reload" year after year after year.

It's excuse making. If you point it out you'll get the argument that it can't be the coaching staff because they went 13-0 at UCF so they must be infallible. They will also contradict themselves and say at the same time that UCF had way better players than Nebraska does now so you also can't fault the coaching staff at all now because they need better players. It's a two faced circular rationalization.

Ok, name a name, if youre giving it your all, but want better teammates yourself, how do you know its not you,or that it is you the coach is talking about?
When people come up with schemes of their own about perceptions of what theyre hearing, but those hearing it and the words are appliied to dont havevthe same perceptions, I have to pause and think some.
So, now that those pesky upstart youngins on the team are calling players out, has any of those players ,have they yet to bother to look at themselves for once? Without naming names?

Key,every year.
He started with an in place system he recruited to,not someone else, and arguably, by the time he took the reigns, he'd had much more impact than SF has had as HC in year two.
So, contextually, its not apples to apples,
