Who still has confidence in this staff?

One thing that never changes is Arm Chair QBs. What is it that makes someone think that watching an hour of football on a Saturday afternoon makes them more qualified to know what players should be playing than a group of coaches who spend 80 hours a week going over tape, conducting practices, teaching plays, teaching technique, and all the hands on things that go with coaching? I am curious if any of these people have ever been to a football practice. Do they not realize that you spend nearly all your time preparing the starters? How much of the game plan do you think the third string QB is preped for? Is there any twit that thinks the 3rd string QB has had enough reps to have the timing with the receivers down?

I have seen one poster post at least 30 times whining about a play. I wonder is this twit is like this in other areas. Does he carry on for weeks when one of his kids leaves a light on? Does he make a federal case out of a coworker running the copier out of paper? Does he rip his wife fifty times for not putting enough starch in his underwear? Does he have so little to contribute that he feels the need to contribute the same thing over and over and over.

I also wonder when some clown carries on about a play that fails. First of all, does this twit realize that when a play is ran dozens of things are coming together? A miss at any one of them can blow up a play. In addition, I have been around football for many decades and am still waiting to see the perfectly called game. Are there morons out there that think that it is even possible?

Everything you said, add in decisions already made, like long term roster management, red shirt decisions etc.

We have arguably the best collection of QB talent in the history of the program going into next Spring Ball.

All I care about is Frost goes into the Fall playing The Best One, who ever the hell it turns out to be.

Ideally this is the outcome , we need to be prepared and ok with this collection being broken up to achieve this...

Nice thing, we get another one the next year, its no longer a ryfle fyfe one shot wonder,oh noes we'll never get another around here

So the

I agree. And that is why I don't understand why people say he is wedded to Martinez. It could be that in the eyes of he and his offensive coaches, Martinez gives them the best opportunity to win. But I don't think he has professional and career suicide in mind by playing Martinez ahead of another QB who he believes gives the Huskers a better chance to win. This is not how football coaches stay employed. It takes a little time to figure out if someone cannot get the job done and more importantly if you have someone available who can get the job done to replace them. I think he and the other coaches have been just as surprised, NO more surprised than we have about Martinez' performance at time this year. As a fan I have put up with the same crap from the Huskers as everyone else has for the past 20 years. And with the exception of a few shiny moments during the Pelini years, I can deal with these past two years, as damn frustrating as they were.
You would sure think that would be the case, but then there comes along situations like Sam Keller vs Joe Ganz and it makes you wonder..... It may be that at the start of the season, AM was the best QB, but after seeing the others in game situations later in the season, I'm not overly convinced that is the case today. Martinez has some issues between the ears that keep showing up when he is in game situations, and his run game has taken a step back. If that level of play continues, I would expect AM to be replaced by next season. One thing I'm convinced of, is we won't win anything of much significance with AM playing like he has this year. We may get to a bowl game, and maybe a little more, but I don't think the ceiling is very high with AM right now. I really hope AM gets it together, because I think next season will be a critical time to see which QBs stay or who opts to transfer. I could be wrong, but I just don't see how AM, Vedral, LM, and Smothers all remaining on the roster....

I see the same problem you see, but I am very curious what you think the solution is. And please don't go to the "I'm not being paid millions of dollars a year to fix it." What is your idea of a solution?
Martinez has not been the best player in many games. Play McCaffery or Vedral or that other kid, Feel free to substitute a player who is not getting the job done.
He might wanna check jucos in his recruiting junkets. First stop is Alabama and meet with the Smothers kid for sure.

How about we upgrade the defense so the pressure is not so onerous to the offense. There are dozens of ways to improve other than just doing the same o same o

Good post. I'm smoking a Nica Rustica in honor of it!

Masker for president!!!!!!!
If not, make him starter anyways, he's homegrown and this staff owes us for missing on that couldnt miss Burrow thing.

I hope it is a big fat 60 ringer.

On a more important note, it is hard to find a decent cigar in Colombia. The main problem here is that so few Colombians smoke cigars that the ones you can buy are not stored properly in humidifiers and tend to be dry. It's gotten to the point where the only time I get to smoke a decent cigar is when I go back to Miami for a visit. But, the climate here is great and the women are beautiful, so I will suffer through.

I don't know if there are import deterrents but go online and check out Cigars International. Good selections and good prices.

Again, calling other members clowns, twits, and morons is....well...very unbecoming.

Back on point. Jarhead brought up the Keller/Ganz situation from a few years ago. I think sometimes coaches can be blinded by measurables. The 6'3 and 6'4 guys with the strong arm that can throw the ball through the swinging tire (metaphorically speaking) in drills can cloud a coaches judgement. Jeff George comes to mind. All the physical tools in the world but a complete head case in crunch time. Sometimes us arm chair QBs are watching the game and thinking "Damn, every time that guy is in the game good things happen"...It's all about intangibles and improvisational skills. Meanwhile Head Coach, who spends countless hours watching the Big Guy throwing lasers in practice is thinking "I better get Big Guy back in there, he can throw the deep ball." Right now Martinez is the "Big Guy" that Coach Frost is afraid to be without. He's taller, stronger, and has a better arm than anyone else in the room. But he is also slow to react, and does not see the field very well. How many times did we hear the stadium roar because there was a lane available to run for 20 plus yards and Martinez would hold it and hold it and hold it before tossing it out of bounds because he couldn't find the open receiver.

It's possible sometimes the fans can see the big picture and positive results with clearer vision than the coach that has been preparing "his guy" all week. But what do I know...I just watch football on Saturday afternoons...

Having read all of the interesting and mostly good takes about the QB situation, I have to remind myself that Martinez didn't play a down of football as a high school senior. He came to Nebraska and was immediately thrust into the spotlight of a major college football program and in games had to rely upon his reactions under pressure without the experience to quickly evaluate his options. This year, I believe, that his problem or steps backwards have come from too much thinking during plays. Being coached to be patient and go through his progressions, in spite of his O'line not providing him ample time in too many instances. Maybe we fans viewed it as him being physically slower when it was a mental thing. I don't really know.

I think it is a mistake to give up on him, but I also believe he should have to be evaluated fairly in competition with the other QB's in the spring and fall practices. If I hear Frost or the QB guru crown him "our leader" and "our starter" before that complete evaluation, I will be very disappointed. BTW, I haven't seen or heard much about or from the QB guru this fall. Why do you think that is?

I've never been to a football practice in my life. Not one. I spent most of my time in my Mom's basement playing D and D. I just wish I had the wisdom of what certainly a star athlete like yourself. Oh well, thank God for internet forums so us un-athletic twits can have an opinion just like Heisman trophy candidates like yourself.
