Where are they now

Sounds like this may be a career ending injury. Best wishes to the young man.
I wish him the best too.

My gut tells me that Dowdell's college career path has been skewed by those a-holes at Kentucky. They initially overpaid him because they were pissed at the Huskers for taking their WR coach a couple of his star players (they got one back after he was caught stealing from his teammates--great guy.)

Then, I would bet the farm that they drastically cut his compensation forcing him to find another program. He was good enough he was picked up by Georgia but I would again bet the farm that they weren't paying him what Kentucky paid him a year ago.

For all the head-shaking about NIL, I believe Nebraska does things the right way--unlike programs like Kentucky.

Wish the young man well in recovery. Hope he can recover well enough to have a quality life even if it no longer includes football.

Side note, this is a perfect example of why the Transfer Portal needs to be fixed. 4 colleges in 4 years? I hadn't realized he transferred to Georgia.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, Dowdell was on his 4th school in 4 years. The ATV accident isn’t his biggest problem.

I do know we have a guy who pulled off the (should be) impossible 5 for 5. The same thing applies to him. And throw Raiola in there too.

I'm going to come to Dowdell's defense here.

If you want, you can fault him for transferring from Oregon to Nebraska when he saw his competition and lack of PT as a freshman.

But after that, by all accounts, Dowdell wanted to stay at Nebraska. But Kentucky -- who has had a long-standing 'thing' with our program and who was pissed we were taking their talented WR coach and star player -- gave him an NIL offer that was "too big to refuse." Coach Rhule said at the time that he didn't blame the kid for accepting it. The word was we wanted to keep him but it was too large an offer to match.

So the kid goes to Kentucky and they use him sparingly and then kick his NIL offer to the curb going into this year. Is that Dowdell's fault? Fortunately for him, he was talented enough to be picked up by a bigtime program like Georgia but you can bet it was for an NIL deal that paled in comparison to what he got Year One at Kentucky.

Yeah, I suppose you could fault a 19 year old for following the money--but for the money Kentucky was offering, it would take a hell of a lot of fortitude to pass up that kind of dough. Granted, if he knew how it would've all turned out, he might've stayed but hindsight is always 20-20.

Put aside for a second that the main point was someone transferring that many times.

All of your justifications make him seem helpless as if he had no say in the matter, and that’s a hilariously false narrative.

He chose to leave Oregon. He could’ve stayed and fought to improve and battle for playing time. He left, and justified it with PT and money.

He chose to leave Nebraska. Coming to NU was a big jump in both PT and money, but that still wasn’t enough. He justified it with a raise he couldn’t refuse. Yes, he could have.

He chose to leave Kentucky. He didn’t perform well and there were PT and monetary consequences. Sounds reasonable for them to do considering he came for an “offer he couldn’t refuse”. He could’ve stayed and worked harder to improve. That’s something he’s opted against twice. And as you said, he was talented enough for Georgia to want him.

He’s demonstrated a pattern with his choices. You’ve expressed that you understand why he made each of the choices he made. Still, his choices as a whole paint a picture that is pretty clear.

I agree. That's why I said, if you want you could fault him for that. I was talking specifically about his Kentucky transfer. The Nebraska buzz surrounding Dowdell's Kentucky offer was "Are you frickin' kidding me??!!? They offered him THAT???" Yeah, sure, he could've turned it down. But unless you're a player with super wealthy parents, a huge NIL offer to most 18 or 19 year old kids--and especially the kids' parents--is a really big deal.

It's also a really big deal when that kind of money is taken away. It reminds me back in the old days when a college coach---gasp!---TOOK AWAY a kid's scholarship. Who's fault is that? I can remember back-in-the-day when we got self-righteous and turned up our noses at 'win at all cost' coaches like Nick Saban who routinely did that.

Some of you old timers might remember the 1977 movie, One on One starring Robby Benson about a star basketball player in high school who was told his freshman year by his disappointed college coach that his scholie was gonna be pulled at the end of the season. If you can find it, it wasn't a bad film.

Listen, I fully get your issue with multi-college transfers. My only point is that its never as simple as a player deciding to leave. As the old saying goes, "It takes two to tango" and that's especially true regarding an athlete staying at the same school throughout his college career.

Edit: Thanks, PD. I agree.

I also wish Dante a speedy recovery. And yeah, I didn't know he had transferred to Georgia either.
