Super Official Nebraska vs Ohio Game Week Thread.

I'm just going to say it. Listen to me now and hear me later. The Husker offense will be much improved and a lot of fun to watch this season. I hope Aurich can work his magic, but I'm not sold on the defense. It won't be obvious the first 3 games but I'm afraid the D will be exposed in conference.

This is my biggest fear. I so want a lock down D, but just too many unknowns to get too excited. I’ve listened to enough Aurich interviews to feel we MIGHT have the real deal, but I also feel he might be starting several feet behind the starting line. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out our best players on defense turn out to be transfers and young players who haven’t had a lot of personal training by some of the previous staff who have exited.

Because of the way last season ended, I think fans are underestimating the overall defensive talent we have.

And I know Aurich's Blackshirt defense hasn't played a down yet but I'm impressed with this young coach. He may be an up-and-comer but he oozes confidence and -- although they're just words at this point -- he's stressing the qualities I believe separate okay Ds from great ones: FIRE, PASSION, and VIOLENT INTENTIONS.

I'm anxious to see if those qualities will be on display when the Blackshirts take the field on Saturday.

I think this will be a better team overall from last season - good enough to get past 7 wins with this schedule? Maybe. Saturday I'll be watching the oline and defense to get a feel for where we are at. And our new QB - he was clearly the best QB in the Spring Game - so I expect him to do well especially against teams like Ohio.

.

If you add the fact that lessons learned, need to be unlearned, and relearned, you have hit me to a T. I can't help thinking Aurich is the guy to do this. My question is; how long does he have to do this while appeasing the fan base? With transfers and young bucks that haven't fully been indoctrinated into previous techniques, I think there is hope that by the first half of the season we will be on the right trajectory. I'm glad the easiest part is up front (ie the first five games). I think we'll need a little time.

Rob keeps using the term "simple". I can't help thinking this might not be the right term initially. Once indoctrinated and programed, it might seem that way to players......but not at first, at least not without some missteps.

I'm excited, but a little apprehensive. If we hadn't have had a couple of decades of mediocre, or less, of play, I think the fans would be willing to give a little more breathing room. As of now, the heat is on. Some of it is deserved imo. Matt hired some subpar assistant coaches......that's on him. But if he has the right guys now, and I suspect he has, I hope he gets the time to let them flourish. I really don't want another fiasco like the termination of Solich after he assembled a new staff........at least without a true trial period.

You read my mind and put it into a more succinct and articulate post than I would have.

Far be it from me to act like I know diddily-squat about coaching defense, but from the Aurich interviews I've listened to, he strikes me as an intelligent guy (he's been dubbed The Mad Scientist) whose coaching is grounded in "Old School" (Nebraska-like) principles. (Ironic, since his last coaching stint was at San Diego State.) On the surface, anything Old School comes across feeling contradictory in this "DCs vs OCs Chessmaster" age.

But there's a method to Rob's madness. He believed in the K.I.S.S. approach to installing his new defense. He's stressed "Keeping It Simple" because the less a player has to think, the faster they are on the field and the harder they hit.

One other thing, redfred: Owen Chambliss. He came with Aurich and serves as his field general. I've heard him described as having a 'commanding presence' behind the defensive line reminiscent for us old timers of Dick Butkus back in the day.

Yeah, that's just preseason hype until we can see for ourselves but Chambliss is not only a great player but clearly one sharp cookie who has helped his teammates adjust to their new scheme. If you haven't listened to one of his pressers, I would encourage you to do so before Saturday.

You're right. He says all the right things regarding the defense and how they should play. We'll see how they play in 2 days.

And I'll share with you what I thought of their play Sunday morning. :)

Looking forward to it. I'll tell what I'll be focusing on:

OFFENSE:
* Run the ball at will?
* OTs hold up in pass pro?
* Throw the ball downfield? (Passes in the 8-20 yard range.)

DEFENSE:
* Stop the run? (Less than 3 yards per carry.)
* No chunk plays.
* Contain the QB

SPECIAL TEAMS:
* Good punt and kickoff returns?
* Good coverage of punt and kickoffs?
* Can they get any blocks while preventing their kicks from being blocked?
* No gaffes?

If the Huskers can do those things, we should be alright.

Hopefully, we learn nothing at all Saturday. If we win easy with a vanilla offense and basic defense, it's as it should be. We should just out-athlete 'em across the board. Our size, strength, and speed should overwhelm them.
The only thing we should learn is were we prepared for the first game of the season. Low penalties, did people know their assignments, were we quick but unrushed? I hope so.
I hope Doc's prediction is accurate and we get a complete blowout.
