Spring Game Thoughts

1. Rule is looking like the top RB. Let's keep him healthy and improving.
2. Passing game looked very pedestrian. Colandrea's INT really wasn't his fault, but he throws into double coverage a lot. Lateef and Kaelin both look like capable back-ups.
3. Hard to tell much about the defense from a Spring Game. I think there would have been several sacks if the QB was fair game.
4. Please don't fair catch at the three yard line...or the five or the nine.
4. After last season's finish, Maybe it's for the best that there weren't 70,000 people at the game. Part of our problem might be that no matter how lousy the on-field product, people will show up for games. It's a Nebraska hallmark -- the fan loyalty. Does that curtail the sense of urgency?

All of our RBs have their strengths--but Rule, as a freshman, looks to me like the total package.

For someone who hasn't been on campus for more than a few months, I thought Colandrea looked good--his quickness afoot and -- his fast blinking -- stood out. Keep in mind, our best WR didn't play.

Agreed!

By the same token, Colandrea would've had a few breakaway scrambles.

In Jacory's defense, we were told before the game that our receiving team would fair-catch every punt.

I get we were all disappointed by the wrap-up to last season, but "lousy" describes the Scott Frost Era. After years of futility, we've had back-to-back winning seasons.

For all the general fan hand-wringing, I'm expecting some Good Ol' Nebraska Slobberknocker Football this fall with an exciting Colandrea-led offense.

Slobberknocker Football
We'll see. Running game looks a little better, I guess. Problem with execution of the plays. Not very far along yet in that area. One or two nice plays and nothing the next few. Oh well it's early in the process I suppose.
Overall, not a smooth operation still getting use to each other and finding out what will work. Need a lot more repetitions.
Think our secondary was executing well. Linebackers? Who are they? For years I could name them I don't even know who is playing the position these days.

Here's my take on the spring game.

#1. Although the weather cooperated, March is too early for a spring game. A couple recruits were sitting right in front of me and they were "freezing." This is as early as they've ever had the spring game. Keep it in April.
#2. Before his 75 yard TD run, I said Rule was the RB1 come this fall. From the way he ran in warmups to what he was doing on the field, you could see it. Backup RB is between Booth and Ives, IMO. But I think Booth edges Ives out. I also had that thought before his end of the game run of 23 yards.
#3. QB1 is Colandrea. He has some wheels and quick thinking that will eliminate a lot of sacks. Will move the chains. Passing wasn't bad. As mentioned, the interception was not his fault. He was on the sideline with helmet off most of second half...tells me the coaches also know he is QB1. Toss up between Lateef and Kaelin for backup. I think both will be capable backups. Need to get them each playing time early so they are ready.
#4. WR/TE-Barney had a great catch as did Quinn Clark. Most passes were dump offs in the flats or sideline routes. I think this will be a serviceable group and may surprise some people. Keep in mind that Hunter was not suited up, nor was Carter Nelson. I will say, Nelson looks like he has hit the weight room and put on some good weight. Demetrius Bell also looks like he took the weight room seriously.
#5. OL- I thought they provided some push on running plays and provided for plenty of time on passing plays. There were a few guys not suited up. Gottula comes to mind that looks like a mid 90's OL. The one concern I came away with was multiple high snaps. Looked like they addressed that after the worst one almost went over Soukups head.
#6. DL-don't have much here. Nothing jumped out at me as far as superior play, nor big concerns. Obviously "touch" football with QB limits what you will see in spring ball.
#7. LB/S - seems to me there are several that want to play tackle football. There were a number of good sticks with textbook wrapping up and taking down. Wacker leads the way with his desire to play. Hopefully for his sake that translates to playing time. Don't know if he is the most talented of he bunch, but certainly wants to play. Reminds me of prototypical Blackshirt mindset. Chambliss I think will be good, but looked like he took a number of plays off.
#8. DB - I think we will be just fine here. Charles had a couple good hits/tackles. Coverage was pretty good. There were a few DPI called or could have been called. Would like to see more ball hawking defense though.
#9. Kicking game looks solid. Punters and FG kickers both had good games.
#10. Return game, obviously non-existent. Didn't like the drop on opening KO, nor the fair catches inside 5. I figured they were told to catch everything though.

Almost forgot...Why was Raiola in Lincoln this weekend? I didn't see him at the FB game, so don't know if he was there, but have an acquaintence that saw him at the Baseball game and the kids got a picture with him (don't know why, but they did.)

Does Oregon not have spring ball?

I don't think I'm being a Negative Nathan, more of a Skeptical Steve when I say I need to see more of our phenom RB Rule before I call him the next Ahman Green or Rex Burkhead. He was recruited as a middle of the road 3 star recruit. Last year, after EJ, we had NO ONE who was even CLOSE to being a B1G RB. Now after a Spring Game we have the answer in Rule? I'd like to see that happen, but when Connor Booth also looks promising, I wonder if perhaps the defense was more the cause of our running back's success? Let's pump the brakes on Rule being the replacement for EJ. He doesn't have elite speed or size, and his durability will be tested before the season is half over. We may have a running back by committee and NOBODY wants that.
