Spring Game Thoughts

I don't think I'm being a Negative Nathan, more of a Skeptical Steve...
I'm thinking, PD, that you're being more of a 'Knucklehead Norm.' :) ;)
...when I say I need to see more of our phenom RB Rule before I call him the next Ahman Green or Rex Burkhead.
Nobody here--including the poster who mentioned Green--called our new freshman RB 'the next Ahman Green.' You're putting words in peoples' mouths.
He was recruited as a middle of the road 3 star recruit.
FWIW, Emmitt Johnson was a middle of the road 3 star recruit too. :)

This is the luke-warmiest endorsement of our running backs from our head coach.

RE: DrFumble's comments- I thought someone compared Rule to Ahman Green. Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels to me as if people think he's a stud. My comprehension skills are admittedly weak. Wasn't EJ "Mr. Football" in Minnesota?

ALSO Et Tu Uenth?

Yes, he was.

He was also a three-star RB who wasn't offered a scholie by his home state University. Emmett was a textbook example of a 'lowly' three-star who--low and behold--became an All-American.

B-But how can that be??!?!! I'm told we don't have any good coaches or players with a chip-on-their-shoulder!!!

Ah, PD, you know I love you. I just thought the Knucklehead Norm was worthy of a Post of the Day comment. It amused me to no end and was exactly what I needed. I'll update the Where Is Uenth thread, probably tomorrow after hub's latest dr. visit and you'll understand why I'm in need of a good chuckle.

My takeaways:
  • Oline is better - maybe much better (hopefully that is not a reflection of our Front 7 on D)
  • Whittington flashed a bunch of times as a pass rusher and disruptor - dude could be stud
  • Rule has a TON of potential to be an elite RB
  • Colandrea is clearly the best QB we have - he did what I expected - he's probably even more mobile than advertised and although he didn't do it much he's good at throwing on the run.
  • We plan to get Barney the ball more based on how he was used in the Spring Game
Overall I feel a little better about this team after that game - call me cautiously optimistic.

how does that look in w s vs losses?

I didn't see the game. But if I decided to watch it, would it be any more informative than last year's game against Houston Christian? Thatt was a feel good game (I may have even posted something flattering about our OL afterwards) that in the end showed us nothing about the flaws that were going to haunt us the rest of the year.

Depends. In 2026, can...

* the OTs (and OL in general) be able to hold up in pass pro?
* the defense stop the run?
* the front four get to get QB without having to blitz?
* the offense consistently score more than 14-17 points against B1G competition?

There are so many variables.

Outside of Rule's long TD (and few other great runs by him) - and the last TD in garbage time.....the D was pretty solid. Pass rush (lack of it) is my main concern right now. I don't think our DC was allowed to get real creative with his calls so that contributed to pass rush being meh. Will that translate against the good B1G offenses we face.....not sure. Which is why I feel a little better but think anything beyond 5 wins is going to be tough go for this team.

It was just a Spring Game after all. Very little real info, more an opportunity to enjoy a glass of Koolaid and fantasize about the coming season.
It did generate some excitement though.
September 5 will tell us a lot more. I'm actually nervous about Ohio. Anything can happen the first game of the season Their QB has played in over 30 D1 games. Last year at Rutgers he threw for 3 TDs in a 34-31 loss. Last year he ran for over 800 yards and 9 TDs. That Rutgers game he ran for 93 yards and a TD. The kid can play. The team went 9-4 last year. This won't be a sacrificial lamb being led to a slaughter. They'll be coming here as live 'dogs and we better be ready.

Here's the question we won't know the answer to until after the Indiana game at the earliest: Is the Nebraska defense that good or is our offense that bad?
