Shatel says SF is coming home

Hey everybody.....the thing that tends to get lost here is the "What If" scenario.....Ok let's just say for discussion sake Frost takes the gig, comes home to much ballyhoo and we promptly go on a bender and Frost lays a huge Ostrich size egg that continues for 2-3 years and the program continues to decline into obscurity......what will happen then.....oh my good giddy aunt Jane the fan base (which has an elephants amazing memory) starts grumbling and teeth gnashing and hair pulling and Frost's supporters start throwing out ......."Well remember what Osborne went through and we gave him all the time he needed to get the job done!" And we wind up with 6 years invested in another failure....?.......Not to mention what it would do to Frost's meteoric rise as a head Coach.....see what I am saying ?...... Frost has a lot to figure out for himself and his growing family.
I know if he were to come home and lay an egg every thing the poor guy has done in his past will get drug up and aired publicly.....is he willing to take that walk ...?....Is he willing to subject his wife and child ( more than likely more by then God willing) to that kind of verbal and mental abuse he would get should he fail here.....It's just he would be under tremendous strain here to succeed and is he willing to take that risk with his career and his family at stake ?.....
Sure we would all turn into Demons if in fact he turned us down for a while but that would eventually die down and go away.....maybe clearing a path for him to come home and Coach in Lincoln sometime down the road after his kids are grown and in college somewhere..

These are things that he has got to be going over in his mind no matter how focused he says he is on his current job.....when he is home laying in bed at night and it's quiet in between trading off who is going to go feed the baby or change it's diapers with his Wife,.....go through his head these thoughts are, or have already..... gone through his mind.

There is a whole lot for him to decide and he was never one to make a rash decision since he chose to spurn Coach Osborne and go play for Coach Walsh when he was at Stanford.....I heard him say once that his decision to go to Stanford was based solely on being able to learn from Coach Walsh....but that opportunity quickly dried up and he decided to come back home if Coach Osborne would have him......he would have played any position just to come home and play, knowing all the time that he was in for it when he got here but it still didn't stop him.

Bottom line here is Scott Frost is a Tough S. O. B. And he earned the right to be the starting QB at NEBRASKA despite all my Brother Blackshirts best efforts......he would not quit or give in.....he just kept coming back for more till basically everybody got tired of trying to get him to quit.....and he won a lot of friends through that......in the end he was a competitor and a grinder.....you just knew beyond a shadow of a doubt if he was in there.....you were going to get every ounce of play out of him.....we wasn't going to complain or take a play off either.....and that is what made him into a winner that had no reverse or back-up in him......so my question is now......I already know what Scott Frost we would get for a coach......but are you all ready for it ?.........................
Or will you turn on him like a pack of rabid Coyote's ....?

Think it over cause I know he is or already has......

Doc.

I wouldn't blame him if he wants to stay. Good Lord, if I was making $2MM and enjoyed where I was/lived it'd be hard to pry me out. I've passed up opportunities that would have payed me more to stay where I am in MT. But, my personal life>>>work life. That said, if Scott's desire is to go for a national championship and the combination at Nebraska>a comfy life and the combination at UCF, then I have a hard time believing he won't come back. Heck, even if he had to put up with us for 6 years, make $30MM and never coach again, it may be worth the squeeze.

Like a lot of others, as long as we can see tangible progress I'll be happy and I'll give him at least as much time as Bo. If they come out like Riley did and let BYU beat us on a time-expiring Hail Mary in game one, then we'll know that he's not cut out for it.

All great points Doc. I have a strange feeling that HUsker Nation will be more patient with Scott if he did come back because of the current shambles the program is in. This is going to take 5-7 years to have us really competing for Big 10 titles and even for National Titles.

That all being said, I fully believe Scott is willing to take that chance. He didn't back down from the challenges when he transferred back to NU, he won't back down as a HC. That's my opinion. Those experiences in college molded him into the man/coach he is today whic is why he's been so successful. He strikes me as the type of person who looks to topple great challenges.

If he doesn't come back I totally understand. I just don't believe the coach we pick will have as much invested in us as Scott would. I could be wrong about that, but seeing how the last 3 hires went, I'm willing to take the chance with a former Husker to reseurrect a once great program back from the ashes.

Was listening to my local AM sports talk radio down here in Tampa today while in the car.

A big time fan calls in and said there is no way that SF would leave UCF for Nebraska...his main reasoning being that SF stands to make 3 million on his contract at UCF next year and that there was no way that Nebraska could afford to buy out Riley and match the UCF contract!!! According to this fan, why would SF leave UCF for a place that can't recruit and make $300,000 less than Mike Riley did this year?

This guy was so ignorant it wasn't even funny. He has absolutely no clue how much $$ NU is set to generate from just being in the Big 10 this year...not to mention...the money our boosters/alumni is set to fork over to get SF.

Even the show's hosts basically mocked him on air. It was pretty entertaining, but just proved to me how delusional the UCF fanbase really is.

Oh...and he also used the argument that if SF was willing to turn down Syracuse's offer, there was no way he'd take the NU job...b/c....you know...Syracuse would be much more of an attractive job! LOL!

That made me laugh hard. Let's put it this way the University can not only afford to pay Riley and his staff plus Bo, They could if they so chose to could Scott or the next coach around the $7 Million per year range. I believe we made $51 million. I think that's just the Big 10. Not to mention every home game I believe generates around $10 mill per game. Then the boosters and split revenue from bowl games, etc.

UCF alum's and Admins are grasping at straws. They are hoping somehow, some way, that Frost just decides he wants to stay put making 2-3 million less than he could anywhere else. LOL

I know SUH...it was hilarious. If I weren't driving down State Road 54 at the time, I might have even called in to offer my $.02 but the show's host pretty much did it for me! LOL!

The funny thing is, Doc, that I think your last paragraph explains WHY the first paragraph won't happen. If Frost is the tough SOB and competitor you and I think he is, he's going to MAKE sure that he and his staff and his team are up to any challenge.

See, this is where I think being a younger coach is beneficial - I think he still has the 'fire in the belly'. Now, if he were to take the NU job, it's possible that the constant pressure could rob him of that, or his priorities change now that he's a dad, but by the same token, that might drive him even more.

Does anyone know how he conducts his practices - ie, does he run multiple stations? That one item right there, it's my belief, would raise NU's level of performance by the second half of the first season to being right up there with Wisconsin.

The part in RED: I disagree with you here. I think if he turns us down he has probably lost any chance at becoming the HC here. At least as far as being welcome with the open arms he has right now. I think there would be way to many that would feel that he spurned us twice to go elsewhere and if he were to struggle then they would be all over him. He can come here now and be given some time to get things righted (probably 5 years in the very least) and if he shows any kind of progress he will be a king. This is the perfect time for Scott Frost to become the HC at NEBRASKA!!!!

It is doubtful that SF, a young head coach, is going to come in and not make mistakes. A quick turnaround will have to be damn near mistake free, and a young coach, even as experienced as he is, needs to be given some grace to find his way and continue to learn through trial and error.

I'm fearful that people will lose hope altogether if "the perfect fit" can't get it done quickly. People are treating this hiring like looking for a spouse. They are seeking out their coaching "soul mate."

If SF takes the job, we need to be in this for the long haul and not divorce him prematurely.

What if? What if? What if?

Maybe this has been discussed, but what if SF doesn't accept? Will we still hire someone right away or will Moos wait until the right person is available?

Moos has always claimed to have a short list, and there is more than one candidate that could do well here. I can’t imagine what he’s seen in the last couple of months would keep him from making a change.

And I agree 100% with your soul mate analogy. Unfortunately, when people think they found their soul mate, they’ll overlook red flags and immediately stop considering other options.

You're right about the short list, but if the guys on that list don't take the job, do we pull the trigger on Riley anyway or just go after anybody else?

If he gets turned down by his entire list (let’s say 4 or 5 people), and then he goes off list purely to say he did something, then we need a new AD. There are legit reasons why each coach could say no. If the entire list declines, we need an AD who swallows his pride, keeps his emotions in check, and tries again for next season.

Having said that, there are too many reasons to take the job. I don’t see a handful of candidates all rejecting.

From what I have heard, Frost to NU is a done deal. Moos told the boosters to "show me the money" and they responded. They have outbid everyone.

Frost will not come to NU and lay a goose egg, he just won't. Reality of the situation is Frost will be markedly better than Riley. The team will play with confidence, the team will play with fire and everyone will know who the boss is.. Frost!

Will he win a national Championship? Don't know, but I KNOW we will get back into the top 25 regularly.. with Frost growing on the job. Very much like TO did.

They say the announcement will be Dec 3rd.
