I find all this portal business interesting......and at the same time frustrating. I really think it's good for a program and players to find a home, get developed, and give it a long and realistic try. I think it's good for a program to have consistent players they have developed. At the same time, I think it would be healthy for players to be part of a community/family of players for an extended period of their lives.
Clearly that isn't going to happen on a consistent basis. Even a developmental loyalist like Coach Rhule has succumbed for the most part to letting others develop players and then trying to step in and finish the process at NU. He still takes fliers on some players, but it appears he want's athletes that have a short distance to the finished end product. It's just too much investment to let others buy in late in the process.......especially since none of the profit goes into NU's coffers.
I foresee a time where smaller schools, and especially with the last ruling, Junior Colleges become the developmental location for athletes. And then a bidding war begins after an athlete is developed. Will there be a compensation for smaller schools and Jucos to do this? It's an interesting consideration. If this does happen, smaller college/Juco coaches will be very well paid imo. They just might be the most important cog in a player's development.
