Roster movement

I'm curious as to why he needs to talk to Mickey about this? I mean, he could talk to Rhule about what he envisions the defense to look like and what role he would play. But Mickey? He's not his position coach, not the HC and not a coach that would work with him on ST. Odd to reach out to him, but makes me feel good that MJ is staying if Mathis is reaching out to him.

Maybe MJ helped to recruit him. Besides his position coach is gone or will be gone.

I assume this is saying something about how the players feel about Mickey. He connects because he cares, and he's straight up with them. This bond could be really valuable to Coach Ruhle, or it could be unintentionally divisive. Personally, I think it would be worth the risk, but I don't have to worry about a huge program, many jobs, many young men, or my own future.

MJ would never; let it get out of hand. He would make sure that everyone was in alignment with HCMRh or he wouldn't accept the position.

I probably should have highlighted "unintentionally divisive". I've seen it happen a time or two and no one instigated it or promoted it. I don't know Mickey, but in listening to those who do I think it's safe to say he is as high caliber as it gets. I have absolutely no doubt that Mickey would ever do anything to sabotage this, or any, program. But in circumstances such as these, things can take a side trip with no ill motive taken at all. In some cases, persons can develop a friendship, or trusting relationship, that is not in their direct hierarchy structure. Sometimes it's just asking for advice. Sometimes it's just venting to a friend. Sometimes it's just innocent conversation that is misconstrued by one party. Whatever it is, it sometimes takes on a life of its own that can be corrected with all parties involved, but it's always a distraction and time consuming.

I've come down on the side that I'd like Mickey to stay. I think he would be a very good asset. And any disagreement would be worked out without allowing players to be drawn into the fray. As everyone knows most every good coach is not weak-willed. They are strong and passionate. They have opinions and sometimes things are expressed. All I'll say is that it happens..........even among very good persons.

Yant is gone - not sure he was going to fit Rhule's offense and he seemed to struggle to be ready to go week to week so maybe for the best.

I’m ok with that— he had some talent, but apparently you had to dig “really” deep to find it

I dont think it was a question of talent. I think it was more a question of smarts. He just couldn't grasp the playbook.
He was a guy that a lot of people thought was going to be great based on 1 game....I admit I thought Yant was going to be a breakout star.

This one is odd to me. He got a lot of playing time- looked good against Michigan. Nebraska kid...
Maybe he's just seeing what else is out there while waiting for NU's staff to settle?
Hope you’re right— was a real bright spot on defense

I have never begrudged a kid for transferring. I have always said they have to make the best decisions they can for their future. And I totally get that some kids don't want to play for a new coach or coaching staff who didn't recruit them. To the players hitting the Transfer Portal, good luck and all the best in your future endevours.
