My note to Coach Joseph.

Listen, I'm a big Mickey Joseph fan. Early on, I started getting a bunch of 'warm, fuzzies' about the possibility of him becoming the permanent head coach.

But a program leader can't lead if he's being undercut by one of his assistants. I'm not saying Joseph would do that buuuuuuut he holds a lot of power with the players -- and with the fans. If Rhule is going to get off to a fast start, he needs EVERYBODY on his side.

The next few months are going to be challenging enough for Rhule and his new staff to all get on the same page in the very best of situations. The last thing a new coaching staff needs is dissension among the players or the coaches -- or both.

I think reading this would mean that one would have to also assume that only a pure A-hole would do that.

And we all know MJ is far from being that.

I don't know if you guys have heard but apparently there is some bad blood between Mickey Joseph and Matt Rhule. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else.
That has been reported on this forum I believe. Mj and Matt talked on either Friday or Saturday and that has been worked through. It was regarding how things went down when Matt fired his OC at Carolina last year, Joe Brady.

We're talking 'office politics' on a grand scale. OF COURSE Mickey Joseph is not 'a pure A-hole' but consider the dynamics here: He's been THE MAN, the Head Husker since before the OU game back in September.

Whether you're talking about being an interim manager, an acting director, or the interim head coach of a college football team, its gotta HURT like hell to be passed over for a job you crave. But in Mickey's case, you want him to immediately 'suck it up' and enthusiastically work for the new guy who has taken YOUR place? Some people can do that---and others can't.

And when you've got players, staff and a lot of fans whispering in your ear that it SHOULD have been you, how do you ignore it?

I like Mickey and I have tremendous admiration for what he's done for DONU this season. But if he stays and tows the new party line, my admiration for him as a professional and as a high-character guy will go off-the-charts.

Did Mickey officially apply for the position? As of about a week or two ago he said Trev had not even spoken to him about the position. I found that to be really strange when there were rumours at that time Rhule was going to be the guy. All the speculation in this forum about him taking over the program and he didn't even get an interview? Not sure what to make of it all...

Mickey knew the score. He made it crystal clear early on that his 'interview' was a week-to-week thing and how well he's doing would depend on the number of "Ws" he collected.

If he could have managed to beat Minny, Wiscy and Iowa, that would have made it much tougher for Trev to ignore. But when you remove all of the emotion from the equation (not an easy thing to do in sports), Matt Rhule was a much stronger candidate for a wide-variety of reasons---and that's not meant to take anything away from what Mickey did.

He had 9 interviews. Trev saw something that made him go in a different direction.

One of the aspects of the job that fans, I think, often fail to realize is the importance of running a tight ship--even when that ship is a huge one. Frost had experience as a head coach coming in and yet HE found himself quickly over his head. With MJ, not only would it be about setting up a brand new staff, it's about managing this ocean liner.

A lot of stuff about MJ and HCMRh talking, not talking......

it will be OK - if MJ decides to move on (or Rhule moves on) both Nebraska and MJ will be fine. I get the desire to keep MJ around - but let the guys that have to live with the decision every day make the call.

Already buzz Spencer Rattler is following the OC here........there will be more stories like that over the next few weeks. I am not worried about losing players with or without MJ - because we will fill the holes.

aTM had 4 players declared for the Transfer Portal this morning - going to be plenty of talent floating around looking for NIL deals.

It’s a tough task, one I believe that he could manage to handle with more experience. Without the noted experience, we could see almost the same results we have the past 10 years, or not. We could see the same results with Rhule too, don’t get me wrong.

I seriously hope all you who want Ruhle so badly get disappointed....no offense intended.
Based on what I'm hearing there might be a riot in Lincoln if Trev goes this route.
(Just kidding about the Riot)
However my phone and email are topped out with messages asking about Ruhle and 99.999% of them DO NOT THINK RUHLE IS THE RIGHT CHOICE. I had one from a ticket holder who's tickets date back to before The Bob father and they have now passed into the hands of a 40 ish year old business man and his wife and 2 kids and he tells me he will cut off his donation checks and dump the tickets if the University makes another gigantic blunder in his eyes and hires Matt Ruhle because he will put on one of his ewok smocks and throw out every tradition Nebraska is known for because he has no clue what Nebraska is about....Ruhle just doesn't fit the mold of the type coach who can walk into a school in western Nebraska and strike up a conversation with a bunch of rough tough, sweat and dirt stained Rancher's ....where EVERYONE KNOWS MICKEY JOSEPH and he is welcomed anywhere he shows up.....hiring Ruhle just doesn't fit the type Coach Trev said he wants.
Either way it seemed to me the team and Mickey were set to say goodbye after this game. That was the vibe both Kate and I got. I haven't tried to contact any one yet because they deserve to just celebrate with each other and be free from this scrutiny they have endured.
I can't put my finger on it but the press conference seemed like more of a goodbye than anything. They might already know the fate is sealed and are just waiting for word to come Sunday or Monday.....and it makes me sad that all that has been accomplished by Mickey might very well get blown to bits in a matter of hours.

DOC HOLIDAY
I do not have access to anybody in the know. But common sense tells me that Trev had his favorite as he said, maybe it was Rhule, maybe not. I was never committed to one guy. The OC at Alabama went thru hell at Penn St and had SEC and NFL experience. Matt Campbell never excited me and he crashed and burned this year. A bunch of coaches did except for Klineman at KSU. But I never thought he would leave due to is relationship with the AD. Aranda was up there on my list, good resume and worked with Mickey. I never thought Mickey would get the job once the team got past their two game streak. With each loss it looked less and less likely he would get the job. I thought maybe somebody with HC experience would come on board as a coordinator to help him with the CEO stuff. But not with 5 losses. Press conferences were a big improvement over Frost. The players really seemed to respond to him. Nobody except maybe CT seemed to care Frost was gone. I understand the were close. Mickey let Chinander go, and it really worked out. Aside from Purdue the D kept them in all the games except Michigan, and that is understandable. I had to wonder why the offense only got worse. That is on the O coaches. Probably a certain O-Line coach was worse than his predecessor. Looks like he should have been fired and they should have gone out and found a new line coach. Well maybe not, just not possible to change mid season.
So Rhule made my top five every week I thought about it. Neon Sanders was a NO for me. Urban Meyer (if he was interested) was initially a no, then I thought I would make a deal with the devil. He could bring them back and then retire, hopefully with a scandal,

I always like Mickey as a player and a WR coach. I did think it was odd as a WR coach when he was an option QB. But I never got the chance to meet him. Impressive guy the more you hear him and the work he does. I am no different than everybody else, really want him to stay.

But Mickey never got a formal interview according to the news. Maybe he is bitter about that. Maybe he is still bitter about Rhule firing his buddy. Despite what he says maybe he wants to move on. IF he really wanted to stay, a contract would be signed by now. He was the highest paid WR coach in the country. Recruiting coordinator. Maybe less recruiting and more organizing? Passing game coordinator? What does that really mean. The OC is the guy who designs the offense and calls the game. So you can give him more titles, but the coordinators get paid more. Satterfield is more prepared to be OC. So IF he was offered a 150K raise, he should take it if he wants to right the ship in Lincoln. He would make a big difference. And IF he has asked to One Million, then he will get turned down, and maybe he just does not to work for a guy that got the job he wanted. Anybody can understand that. So those are my thoughts of the past few months.

So now to address the quote from Doc. Huskermax can be read by non members. They had a poll that indicated 85% of the people voted positive about Rhule. Stark contrast to 99.9% unfavorable. And the part Doc hopes people are disappointed. What does that mean? That sounds like he hopes the Huskers lose under Rhule? Come September I know he will not hope for Rhule to disappoint us. The Bobfather had no Nebraska roots, and he worked out pretty well. Nick Saban had no Alabama roots. There is so many TO's around, maybe none. I think we will be fine with an outsider with experience and the backing of Trev. I trust his judgement.

It's time to support the new guy, plain and simple. Not Urban or Deion so I'm good to go! I get what Doc is saying about his emok smocks (glad I didn't have coffee in my mouth when I read that the first time though)! My biggest complaint with him is that crap on his face. He's just like hub and doesn't get an even beard with bald spots in it. Hub refuses to even try to grow a beard anymore. So, personally, I'd tell our new HC of NUFB to shave that sucker off. But that's just me. The smocks don't bother me one way or another.

Our @Doc Holiday is very capable of defending himself, he certainly doesn't need me. But I read that quote as one coming from a VERY passionate former player who was squarely in the Mickey Joseph camp. I think we all can respect that. But once the high emotions that surround a search like this one that means so much to so many people die down, I fully expect our Resident Blackshirt to have a change of heart.

Doc is Old School -- How many times did Rhule mention HE was 'old school' during his presser? Doc is all about physical football -- that's a HUGE part of Rhule's approach to the game. Doc is all about toughness -- so is Rhule. Now it's easy to 'talk' a good game and Coach Rhule acknowledged that. But another thing he said that resonnated with me and -- I suspect, Doc, you, and a lot of our fellow BHFers -- is that its a day-by-day process that involves 'rolling up your sleeves' and working hard. Rhule never mentioned it -- and probably hasn't heard it yet -- but his philosophy is epitomized by our players' "Day by Day" chant before games. That's why this hire feels so right -- he didn't grow up a Husker, didn't play for the Bobfather or Coach Osborne, but his values and coaching philosophy are right out of The Nebraska Way playbook. I'm just a fan, albeit a 50+ year one. But I have to believe our former players have already sensed it too or will over time.

Yesterday, I listened to a Rhule interview where he mentioned one of players in the NFL that he has a tremendous amount of respect for is Ameer Abdullah (anyone at all surprised by that?). Coach Rhule said that Ameer told him that he was excited by the news and said couldn't imagine a better head coach for HIS University.

Doc Holiday and I have different posting styles, but Hunchback Johnny once told me the two of us are more alike than either of us probably realizes.

Oh, really?
I responded. Let me guess, it's our DEEP, UNRELENTING PASSION for Husker football, right?

Hunch looked at me funny and said, HELL NO, Fumble. You're BOTH full of $hit!!!
;) :)
