My note to Coach Joseph.

I wanted to share with you all a note I sent to Coach Mickey Joseph.

Hey Mick,

First and foremost We want to Give you our most sincere and grateful Thank You.
You took on a helluva responsibility in what you were asked to do but as always with you, at least in my experience, knowing you since I was a High School player on my recruiting trip, you have always given above and beyond what was asked or expected from you.
You not only provided a calm, honesty for the team but you gave them respect and accountability. You provided an environment of stability and leadership of the best quality ..... something that's been missing for a long time. You gave these young men faith that if they believe in themselves anything is truly possible....but you also gave them responsible accountability where they got back more than they were used to giving out and to be honest it shocked them back to reality...&..away from tweeting like birds, listening to those who tried to keep them down, reading the articles where people with very little if any real idea about what they were saying ......then all of a sudden the players understood what and why people were doing and saying things and began to shut out all the noise and started to focus just on themselves and the team....you showed them ......that they could win games they had been told they had no shot to win.....it was a tough road to hoe but you stayed true to your time as a player and your up-bringing and all of a sudden the team got tougher & more physical as you and the team grew together.
Honestly as a player myself what you were able to do with this team in the short time you have had with them is truly AMAZING.....and I'm not the only one who knows and See's what you have been able to do with a team of young men, most of whom you had never even heard of until you took the job as our Interim head coach, all you were able to accomplish takes most Coaching Staff's a full year or 2 before they could get done what you have in just 3 months.....you took over the first second week of September and Today is November 25th after the Win at Iowa....in Kinnick Stadium a tough place for any team to win.
My point here is what you have done in less than 90 days.....something that takes most complete good staff's at LEAST a year to to do and then to do it with a group of young men who frankly most thought they were either snake bit or just not good enough after the constant barrage of being told and written about how bad they were and how they couldn't win, and would be lucky to wind up with a 1-11 season ! But you took that broken group and built them back into a tough, physical, disciplined group of good young men not just on the field but in the classroom and on the streets.
You gave them Dignity, Respect, Honor, Faith, Hope and a belief that
#1). they really were way better than anyone had a clue.
#2). You showed them the Man that's inside.
#3). How to be accountable and hold your teammates accountable.
#4). Lastly.... basically Mick you turned a bunch of non believers you had almost no hand in recruiting, Into a good group of Men! And we all owe you more than words can describe.

You saw for yourself when you first came back to Lincoln just how completely and how far removed Nebraska was from where it was when you left..... Remember? You told me how shocked you were at what had happened to the place since you played ?
Anyway Mickey no matter what happens from today forward THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.....FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE.......so far.
We owe you so very much and WE hope this will forever change us for the better going forward.....
Thanks Again Mickey.....for everything but mostly for just being you.
Well said Doc! That was a helluva good letter expressing thanks to Mickey. He was in a tough spot and got the players to keep working, and it paid off with the win vs Iowa.

In talking with some personal acquaintances, most are happy, or at least in a wait-n-see mode. Of those that aren't, I can't honestly tell if their discontent is they are hurt that their pick wasn't selected, or a true belief that Matt was a bad hire. The former position doesn't bother me. I'll put trust in Trev, the search committee, and the other sources Trev has contacted. The latter position is always a little troubling because depending on their expertise and track record one wonders do they see something I don't.

It has been rumored that Trev has talked to Urban for some insight. If true, I would love to know what he recommended. I'm not an Urban fan, but one thing he is, and that is pretty good at assessing football situations, and coaches.

Win the games we are supposed to win and you bet everyone will feel good about thi

I'm not overly thrilled with this hire but honestly if he leads us to a bowl game next year by going no worse than 6 and 6 I'll be happy because we haven't had that since 2016. And if somehow we win say 8,9, 10 games next year...no one is going to care whether they thought he was a good hire or not. Winning cures all.

If Former Head Coach Mickey Joseph isn't happy with the way things worked out. he should get offers to be a G5 head coach. Make a million bucks a year, show everyone you deserved to be head coach and prepare for opportunity here in the future. He's young, who knows what the future holds 5-10 years down the road.
I said the first week he took over, he was the right guy- to finish the season. He got the guys enthusiastic and trying hard. I didn't think getting rid of Chinander was wise, but it was absolutely the best move.
Thanks FHCMJ- you did what was needed. Hope you're here next year doing your usual bangup job with recruiting.
I take no joy in saying you haven't shown you are ready to take over at Nebraska.
The proof will be in the pudding- will he be a hot HC prospect at the G5 level? Maybe even interview for a P5 school? Let's see how many interviews he gets.

Mickey is 54 - I think people forget that. Wait ten years for a Power 5 offer? Doubtful he gets his first real P5 job when he is 65.

Dang I'm old. Younger than I doesn't mean young anymore. If his goal is to be a head coach at the P5 level, he has to make his move now or accept it will never be. 3 years of success at a G5 and and catch the eye of the P5 is his best chance. It's now or never.

If that’s what he wants just give him what he’s asking. I think they’ll find it was a good investment. Hold the team together, an ace recruiter, and considering he’s put so many in the NFL he must know something about development. We’ve all read his story, so we know how much he cares about kids…….you can’t put a price on that. If he wants to run a program then he better bolt. But if he wants to impact kid’s lives, give some stability for his family as well as letting his own kids grow up in a pretty wholesome environment, he could do much worse.

How much was his compensation for being head coach? Yes, MJ is worth it. Give him the money

Personally I would be very surprised if Mick isn't retained in one form or another on the new staff. He just has too much to offer the program.

If you give MJ $1million/year, what do you give the other seven coaches? Of course, the two coordinators get paid quite a bit more, so, what's your budget?
I'm not saying don't pay Mickey (although I don't think he's worth $1m/yr). I'm asking those who say salaries are out of control- WHAT THE ...???

You're right about varying prices for different positions, and how the payment structure should be assembled to keep everyone happy. Do we go back to something like Riley had with the highest paid assistant being the special team's coordinator? Or do we stay with the typical hierarchy with coordinators top and then on down? Before I made my post above I thought long and hard before posting. I'm asking for a WR's coach to get more than our highest paid coordinator (Whipple) ever got. This is why I've been hesitant to 'break the bank' on head coaching pay. But I've come to the conclusion that if we're going to make a run at bigger things in the win-loss column we're going to need to spend. That's very hard for me to say.......and I might regret it later.....but the big business of college sports has pushed us into this position imo. It's where we are and if we're going to play we're going to need to pay......ugh.

One thing to keep in mind is that inflation and a devaluing dollar makes today's wages not quite so extreme. It's simple.....the more we spend, the less it is worth.....in buying power. Still too high? Yes, but by the end of Matt's 8 year contract it will hard to know just what the buying power of his contract will be worth. If inflation and devaluation continue at their escalating rate......

I'm thinking of one couple I know. He worked for three dollars an hour for years and eventually worked up to 15 dollars an hour, his wife worked odd jobs for half that. They were smart with their money put some away, helped their kids when the could, bought a fixer-up house, and fixed it up on their own, invested a little in the Market, and at retirement were millionaires equity wise. I asked him how it felt. His answer.....'bout the same as when we started".

Your assuming that all assistants NEED the same pay , MJ should get his asking price for holding the ship together and what he can do at wr coach . His pay doesn’t effect the other position coaches pay

I'm perfectly fine with this. I don't know how other coaches will perceive it.

"Hey JimmieJoe, Matt Ruhle here. I wanted to offer you the Offensive coordinator position here at Nebraska."
"Great! Do I get to help pick my staff?"
"Absolutely! But there is one caveat. The Uni has a favorite son- you may know him- Mickey?"
"Oh yeah! He's a great recruiter and I'd love to have him on the staff Anything else?"
"Yeah, he's gonna get paid the same as you and at least 2x what the other coaches get."
"Sooo- he's basically untouchable and may be able to go over our heads to the administration."
"Yeah. They may be grooming him to take my place at the first sign of trouble."
"Sounds great!! I'm on my way!!"

Doesn’t matter , every coach has his own contract. Just like on all the staffs in the NCAA
Point taken, but it still doesn't answer perception. He needs to get buy-in right off the bat. In a perfect world Mickey would have excepted the 750 k. But if he doesn't, and is awarded the 1 mil the next simplest is to give each coordinator 1.1 mil. It's going to be interesting to see what Trev has budgeted for assistants.
