Mark Whipple.

Y'all remember what happened last time we made a big hire from Pitt, right?

Back to the well or reversing the curse?

I've watched Pitt this year and I don't recall seeing pass pass pass.

Wow people getting all kinds of fired up over rumors. No one confirmed yet and we have posters going nuts over this guy or that guy. Lets wait and see who actually gets hired before we get our panties all up in a bunch. Frost has already said they wont be making any major changes to the offense so whomever is hired is going to be running the same basic offense we have seen. Just relax and see what the new guy brings to the table. Might surprise you.

As long as he can stress fundamentals of the game and is a good teacher then that is what is important. If he worth his salt he will know that establishment of a sound running game is a priority.

They averaged 77 plays a game. 40 were pass attempts. They averaged 350yds a game passing and 150 per game on the ground. Their QB, a Heisman candidate, threw 497 times, completed 334 (67%) for 4,000 yards, 8.7 per, 42TDs and 7 INT's

They were the #6 passing offense in the country and not in the top 50 for rushing

Sounds like a good balanced attack. He must have been pretty good at development if he could get a QB who could produce that much and a oline that could protect and receivers that could run routes.
Maybe he'll have an answer for when the linebackers spread out to stop the option

Football Scoop update

Nebraska: The program has now officially announced the hire of Pitt offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple and offensive line coach Donovan Raiola.

Well it's official. Dumb hire.
I still think the Frost era is going to crash land - but it will be interesting to see if we actually look different on offense next season. Next up Bill Busch special teams coordinator.

I’m good with waiting to see how the new offense performs. If it is effective, and we win, I’ll be happy regardless of the methodology used.

My thoughts
  1. Give Whipple a chance. He was pass happy this year but he also had a Heisman finalist for a QB. He's been around a lot of offenses. He may be able to pick up the run game here.
  2. The run game won't work unless we have offensive linemen that can clear holes. So lets hope Riola can improve our offensive line blocking. This may be our most important hire.
  3. I'm all in on hiring a special teams coach and Busch is a good candidate. But....
  4. Who is going to coach the Running Backs, no one? Clearly this is now as big of an exposure as the lack of a special teams focus the last four years.
