Huskers Rhule

Cigs ... is 33-2 since his arrival. Coach Matt is not in the same stratosphere when it comes to coaching accomplishments.
Okie dokie, Hunch.

But back in the day, Nebraska fans would have said the same exact thing when asked to compare Coach Tom with conference rival coach, Barry Switzer.

It would have been hard to argue with them. Barry had whupped Osborne five straight times, had won 2 natties, and sported a 5-year record of 54-4-1 record compared to TO's 5-year record of 46-13-2.

Fun fact: Osborne was inducted into the CFB Hall of Fame in 1998, four years before Switzer was.

Sooo...now we are comparing Matt to Coach Osborne? Or Coach Switzer? I honestly don't understand the correlation. Osborne was 96-24-2 his first 10 years as a head coach. Switzer was 98-17-3.

If you want to give an honest assessment and comparison of where Coach Rhule stands in the pantheon of college coaches he more closely belongs in this group after 10 seasons as head coach.

First 10 years as head coach record
Matt Rhule 71-63 53%
Dana Holgorsen 68-54 56%
Mike Riley 69-54 56%
Dennis Franchione 65-51 56%
Greg Schiano 58-63 48%
Houston Nutt 72-54 57%
Jim Mora Jr 73-53 58%

It was difficult in this WIN NOW culture to find current head coaches with 10 year's experience and barely wins 50% of their games.

In today's presser Coach Matt said the 4th and 9 on the wrong side of the 50-yard line with 6 minutes to play he was simply following the analytics. He wasn't challenged at all, but what analytics conclude that is the right call? It looked like panic to me, but I've never claimed to be a great authority on such matters.

As I was watching the game, I was thinking we would punt, pin them deep and then if we could get a 3 and out or hold them to only one first down and make them punt into that stiff breeze we should be around midfield or our 40 at the worst to start the drive. I cant believe and analytics say to go for it in that situation.

I didn't question his analytics, but somewhere here today I said I'd punt the ball every time in that situation. This is Big Ten Football and playing for field position is the Big Ten thing to do.

I was comparing your criticisms of Coach Matt to the same criticisms I once heard of Coach Tom.

Based on my experience as a fan, being the Head Coach of Nebraska is not for the faint of heart.

Fair enough Doc. As I pointed out, my criticisms are directed at a coach with a career winning percentage of 53 leading a blueblood program. Coach Osborne was being criticized for not beating one specific coach and program that was implementing NIL type behavior 50 years before it was legal. :)

Speaking of the old Husker/Sooner rivalry. When Keith Jackson or Jamelle Holieway or Charles Thompson or Marcus Dupree were breaking Husker hearts with late game heroics, did Coach Osborne ever stand before the press and say, "At the end of the day, I don't call the defense." Somehow, I don't think that would have gone over well with Charlie McBride.

Cignetti is a unicorn. Nobody has done what he as done to turn a program around. The portal and NIL make it possible but outside of him - recent examples are zilch.

Holding Rhule to a high standard is fine - but that comparison should be more than one coach.

Dont forget Cignetti is lucky as hell. He has won game s he should have lost, like against PSU last year, and for the lack of 3 plays by nebraska would have lost last saturday too.

There is one other little issue, Colandria put the ball in the air 44 times, you normally lose those kinds of games, how do you spell Air raid?
