Hey everyone,

So I have a honest question on the officiating yesterday. I wasn't able to watch the game b/c I was coaching my youngest son's Jr. Pee-Wee game yesterday, but my wife and oldest son X was home watching it (our game was 2 hours away and they can't travel to away games that far)....

Anyway, after our crushing loss, I called home to find out about the Husker game and was obviously extremely disappointed about the outcome...but my wife mentioned that she thought there should have been 2 intentional grounding penalties called on NW on one of their final drives that weren't called that allowed them to convert on some 3rd on longs.

I am not hear to bag on the refs or blame them for the loss, I was just curious to hear your opinions to see if she was correct...

I think in each instance there was a RB in the area where he dumped the ball onto the ground without making any attempt to complete a pass. I deleted my recording so I can't go back and confirm but in at least one of those instances, perhaps both, the RB was on the ground and could not have moved to catch the ball. Nevertheless, technically a receiver was kind of in the vicinity.

IMHO the problem with the Zebs is real. They are still hung over from the Pelini years of bleating at them and taking swipes at them in every game. Frost is doing it right complain and move on. The other thing is conference leaders get a break on the penalty's, losers do not. Its the culture, sad but true. We have to get out there and quit the stupid stuff, that is in our power. The close calls will clear themselves up over time and as we improve. Our stupid ass reputation preceeds us and we pay the penalty for it, pardon the pun.

The only egregious call I noticed was the late hit on NW's QBbon the last drive--BS call--that said, in the last 5 minutes we needed one stop or one first down--we didn't get either---that's on us--not the refs

GBR

Thanks for the input all. I asked her if there were any NW receivers / backs in the vicinity or if he was outside the tackle box...but she honestly couldn't recall...she just thought it odd that both times we were about to sack the QB and he just threw it to "no one" to avoid being sacked and no flag.

Honestly, I am just pretty jacked that my wife could talk that much football! LOL!

Thorson was in the grasp on one play and essentially grounded the ball...

An earlier play in the game, Matrinez on a run slid and was hit on the ground... no call...

I would be extremely interested to listen in on the post weekend officials reviews. Is it possible they note that some of the calls against the Huskers have been pretty lame?

The one call that bothers me most... but they probably had to call this day and age was the roughing in the endzone on Davis. He really looked like he tried not to clobber the guy and it looked more inertia/incidental.... if you can't go at the QB like that and have any incidental contact then woe is the future of the game.

That does seem like a Nationwide thing, pros and college and they aren't backing down on it.

D linemen are coached to get their hands up, Davis was not malicious, he was stumbling over the NW lineman blocking, it was a bad call, although understandable given the effort to protect players from injuries

Intent should be a consideration though. There was absolutely no malintent on that play, and no possibility of injury either.

Wish my wife could give me a report like that.. Other than someone being blatantly offsides she would have no clue about any other penalties especially intentionally grounding.

To be fair it wasn't all one-sided. Northwestern did have one penalty called on them the entire game and almost another for illegal substitution but picked up the flag because the player must have gotten off the field a fraction of a second before the ball was snapped. The entire season has been nightmare of penalties against us and no call penalties for the opponent.

The slide of AMs with the hit, the intensity of the hit and the no call negates any calls of grounding or roughing the passer.
I feel like we are in some uppity little piss ant club in the Big Ten.
I thought we were in a big time league

That last drive spoke volumes to me. Northwestern was given the benefit of the doubt on every play and nebraska wasn't. The roughing call was the worst, it didnt meet the definition in any way. Both of the grounding calls that could have been called, would have been called if the role was reversed. Both were close enough that at the very least a flag should have been thrown and picked back up after talking it over if they decided it wasnt an illegal play.
