Honest ? on officiating

The refs didn't lose this game for us. There is no overt conspiracy to throw flags at Nebraska.

I say overt because I do think human nature might play into this situation. We have developed a well-deserved reputation for holding. Experts say holding could be called on both teams on nearly every play in most games. It has to be obvious and serious before a flag is thrown, or so we're told.

I do think subconsciously the refs watch us for signs of holding. And unfortunately, we do hold quite a bit when there are mismatches at work.

It is hard to explain how Northwestern ran 65 passing plays without a single holding penalty. Maybe they're just that good...maybe not.
If the flags were thrown, isnt it also human nature to reach the law of averages?
Why were they picked up?
Why was a qb who has his feet fully in front of him, his body prone to the ground, his slide action starting five yards prior, yet hit on his upper body by a guy coming in from his, the qb , up to his head and upper body not considered?
When did not protecting the qb change?
That was the most egregious penalty the entire game, and not even a thought about it.
Player to the ground, always several sets of eyes as to why and being a ball carrier, even more.
This was a fix, this wasnt missed, this was a royal f you against us.

IMHO the problem with the Zebs is real. They are still hung over from the Pelini years of bleating at them and taking swipes at them in every game. Frost is doing it right complain and move on. The other thing is conference leaders get a break on the penalty's, losers do not. Its the culture, sad but true. We have to get out there and quit the stupid stuff, that is in our power. The close calls will clear themselves up over time and as we improve. Our stupid ass reputation preceeds us and we pay the penalty for it, pardon the pun.
valiantsailor's post is right on. We have the rep. We need to change that. In the meantime we won't get the calls. No holding on 64 passes is frankly impossible to comprehend. the lack of intentional grounding on the two plays was technically correct.

this is a great point. that was targeting by NW's best defender. If he gets ejected there we win.

So you are saying the refs are watching us closer than the other team.....because its all in their head to do so because we deserve it because of reputation?....But no conspiracy...or reason to believe because of what you just said they might have it in for us or have a play in the outcome of the game? Seems to me that if the refs are going out of their way to watch us closer than the other team that would play a huge roll in the outcome of a game.

If this game taught us nothing else, it should be that there are ways to hold and not get called. Clearly there are ways to hold and get called as well. This applies to both offense and defense. Once the "stupid" penalties are cleaned up, I'd like to see are players schooled in the former and how not to do the latter. If we are still being penalized while the opposing team is not after such instruction then there needs to be a serious discussion between NU officials and the Big Ten head of officials.

The grounding calls.....I'm torn between calling them heads-up plays by the qb and negligent calls by the officials.

Exactly. If that had been a Nebraska defender hitting the NW QB that is a personal foul flag with an initial call for targeting that would have had to been reversed through replay when they could see it was a shoulder. NU is getting hosed by the B1G officials this year. You can't throw 65 times and not get one holding call. It is just not statistically possible without manipulation.

By conspiracy, I mean that I don't think a group of refs or B1G admins got together and said "let's stick it to Nebraska." I'm not saying I agree with more scrutiny. Pay the same amount of attention to each team. I do think it happens in some of these games and yes, I do think it plays a role in the outcome of the game. I stop short of saying "the refs stole that game from us," with a few exceptions.*

There's always a play you could have made to negate the bad call. Saturday, there were scores of opportunities. Make four more inches of gain on that 3rd down and that game is probably won.

Don't know about a fix, but it led me to say out loud "I guess I don't understand the intentional grounding rule." Still seems fairly cut-and-dried in my mind, but I am a bit biased.

Ive seen it picked up, but, second time, it was called.
The refs let you have a short dance along that line.
In this game, we couldnt get close to any grey lines, yet they let NW have a sock hop
