What I have been told is Frost made a mistake calling for a vote. He should have said we re going, those that dont want too can opt out.

I remember an other coach that came in and wanted to use his system no matter what. Guess what he lost.Might have helped accelerate the process. But I'm no longer convinced the players are the issue.
Swag bag for the players
You know....somewhere upstairs Just this fall Kate came across a gift bag from one "contributor / advertisers " of the last N.C. game I was part of and it had never been opened....maybe I should go ask her where she put it and see what's in it.....god I hope it wasn't anything edible !
We were completely focused on the game that year and most of us cared less about the swag.....

Two things. Awesome you guys didn't bother, which is why your era was so badass. Additionally, I hope it wasn't a pet Hamster or hermit crab.
I find it amazing that you never opened it before now. I'm the type that shakes, squeezes, etc every single present under the tree, trying to figure out what is in it before Christmas Eve. I would have ripped that bag open 5 seconds tops after it was given to me. I'm a instant gratification when it comes to stuff like that. Always have been, always will be I'm guessing.I thought I better let you all know what was in it though.
It was a typical "swag pack" as they were called in them days.
A ball cap with the official bowl game logo and date on it, a T-Shirt with the same information printed on it. All sorts of assorted little gadgets and gizmos with the bowl logo on them. A pair of Really cool leather sandal/ flip flop looking things ( now I know where all the guys who were wearing them got them from ! )
And a bunch of other "legal" gifts from shoe companies etc. It was a Perdy standard Bowl game Swag Pack with the exception of it being a National Championship game. That in itself had it's own perks on top of the usual bowl game gifts.
All of it had to be pre-approved by the University compliance dept. And we were schooled on being VERY CAREFUL about what we accepted or signed...it got so bad one year we had our own security people keeping us safe and within the rules.
Oh for the good old days of unscrupulous agents, corrupt reporters and freelance photographers willing to do just about anything to create a scandal and just "HAPPEN" to be there to photograph or film it....
We had everything from women being paid to get one of us in a compromising position or situations to guys trying to start fights with some of us on purpose all while the camera rolled and flash bulbs popped....and I am being as delicate with my descriptions as I know how and still stay within the guidelines of the forum.
You'll just have to trust me here...what I described above was mostly mild compared to some things that these people tried to pull off to make a quick buck or discredit ourselves or the Staff/School.
Thankfully the University was on top of there game and we were prepared for anything they would throw at us....oh and we NEVER EVER WENT ANYWHERE WITHOUT A BUNCH OF 10 OR MORE....WE HAD EACH OTHERS BACKS PERIOD AND THAT BROTHERHOOD STILL EXISTS TODAY FOR MOST OF US.

DOC,,I thought they should have thrown a flag for unsportsman like conduct when the FSU team ran on the field before we kicked that ball. It was preordained that Bobby Bowden was going to get that NC. There were several other ;plays that cost us bigtime in that game and influenced the outcome.90% of the time I would say you hit it right on the head but there is one very important thing people need to know.
I wasn't the only player to not pay much attention to the stuff being handed out....we went on a mission after the last loss in a N.C. game when we lost the game to Florida St....( I will stand by my opinion we were robbed till the day I die cause there was no block in the back anywhere on the kick return....thousands of people and rules experts have poured over that film from every possible angle and there just is no block in the back penalty to be found, if you look where the ref who threw the flag was looking even....there was honestly very little contact between any Husker Player and a FSU player within 30 yards of him when he threw the flag !.....bottom line is something very strange happened and there is no excuse for it.....no conspiracy theory just plain clear video proof.)
But we still had an opportunity to win and didn't when the field goal sailed wide right....we who were under classmen had that tattooed on our brain and or memory....we made a vow to NEVER BE IN THAT POSITION EVER AGAIN.....LEAVE NO ROOM FOR DOUBT OR ERRORS....and for the most part we held up our end of the deal...we played every snap of every game with that focus that determination that single purpose of never leaving any room for doubt or supposition.....no room for speculation we were out to prove to everyone that had rode our backs about having the "Coach who couldn't Win the BIG ONE".....HOW WE WERE TO BIG OR SLOW TO KEEP UP.....ETC. ETC. ETC.......we kept that attitude 24/7 -365 days a year and it was part of why we were able to accomplish so much.
Determination, Focus, Committment, Accountability.
That's what we were all about.

Hey Doc I have a Question for you. Do you think toughness can be coached?
Right on!Some say it's an attitude or state of mind that can be taught, some say it's the environment you grow up in.
Then there are those who will say
toughness is born In you and to tell the truth I have seen young guys come Into the team from the toughest neighborhoods on the west and northern east coast, places like Watts in the Los Angels area and the Harbor district of South Boston....those kids grew up in some of the toughest mean streets there are in the country, and while they had no problem holding their own in a fight they didn't always make good teammates because they were used to them against everybody else and had major trust issues.
Then you had guys who were brought up in the "Street Gang" culture...they made fantastic teammates and were tough as nails.
Then you had hard working farm kids who knew no other way of life but "rub a little dirt on it, wrap it up in your handkerchief " and go on about your work.
Funny thing is how well the kids from the east and west coast street gangs got along with the farm and ranch kids of the team.
They would get invited home to the family Farm or Ranch for Holidays and surprisingly fit right in and when there was work to be done they could stand shoulder to shoulder and do the jobs, some of the relationships during these Trips have lasted to this day and those city guys became part of the families whose homes they got invited to.
But before I get too far off track here my answer would be simple YES....it can be taught but is better learned thru experience....like getting your butt kicked and learning to fight back, never give in, never give up until your energy has been completely exhausted....and I mean were already way past the point you thought in your own mind you could go, when you just collapse and all you can do is lay still and breath and even that is a struggle.
Look I know kids today are brought up differently than we were....back then getting a butt whippin from your Mom or Dad was a excepted method of punishment....try that today and you will have every Dolly Do Good or Child protective service agency down your throat and up your kazoo....!
So while I disagree that children should be handled with kid gloves I also understand the need for compassion and tough love.
Most of what is wrong in this whole country today is because those kids who got all the love and understanding but none of the discipline are starting to run things and are having children of their own...."Studies Show" is a popular catchphrase in today's world of social media.
Results say too many kids grew up in "Non Traditional " homes and suffer from no discipline of any kind...where their actions have no consequences and they get a feeling of "entitlement " like the world owes them something and the entire air breathing population should just change overnight and accept them with all their made up or real problems and then we should pay for it ?????
Just the other day Kate and I were in one of the local versions a big chain "buy everything under one roof" stores and there was a young guy we guessed to be in his late 20s to early 30s waiting in line at the Pharmacy in this store and sticking out of the back of his pants on his rear end was a fake fox tail that hung almost to the floor ?...some brave little youngsters oh maybe 7-10 years of age walked up to him and just came out and asked what was up with the Fox Tail ?....he looked up from the magazine he was thumbing through and looked around obviously hoping some parent would shush and whisk the kids away and they asked again only louder this time...by now quite a few people were watching and waiting for the guy to respond and without missing a beat he looked the kids right in the eyes and said "because I identify my gender as a Fox-human that's why!" With an obvious tone of pride and arrogance in his voice.
Well the Children looked perplexed and the crowd of on lookers laughed at him.
My point in telling that story is 2 fold, first Rapid City is widely known as a city of nut bags and multi-gender people and that's fine if the people who run things down there want that....its entirely their business and since we only visit the City maybe once a month it's no skin off my nose or outta my pocket so no big deal but it wasn't just too many years ago say 10 years ago the City had an entirely different name....it was known for the gateway to the Black Hills, home to Airforce Bombers, Rodeos and a hard working ranch town and was the hub of all things new and exciting in the Hills Area....well not any more....as the city itself became a mecca for transgender, Gay and Lesbian and just all around gender confused people. Over 90% of the regular old fashioned Mom&Dad couples with kids to raise have moved out of the city itself and spread into little gated housing developments where the houses are stacked so tightly together you can't pass gas in your own toilet with out the neighbors hearing or smelling it and I am not kidding one bit.
All the while the inner city that at one time was dozens of rows of neat little 2-3-4 bedroom homes built by the Airforce to house base personnel have turned into slums that equal any of the worst I have seen anyplace. 90% only have one parent in the home and then that one parent has 3-6 kids living in the home and none of them from the same father or mother....the kids are left to run as they choose while some parents are forced to work 2 jobs and to leave the discipline up to the oldest child who themselves needs supervision and structure in their lives....worst thing is....we did this ourselves by being complacent and not setting good examples for the parents of today to follow.
You got way more rant here than answer I know but people need to think about how and why were in the place we are. Stop passing the Buck and make this right from within.
10 years ago you would never see 2 openly gay men kissing and having a moonlight walk along the beach someplace....2 lesbian Women crying about not being able to have the same treatment as others when they got married...let alone some really mixed up guy standing in line at the Pharmacy with a fake Fox Tail hanging out his trousers and smearing proudly as he announces he identifies as a Fox-Human !
So yeah if we can teach that kinda crud to the youth of today I would think you could still teach a kid to take a punch and keep on a coming.

I suspect that there are people, besides me, who took umbrage at part of your post. When you delved into your opinion on homosexuality, you did cross a line. But in today's environment, sadly, that is just to be expected.Honestly (though not that I was trying to provoke a response) I was Perdy certain my post would get me in trouble or it would have been removed and I would get my hands clapped in irons and my typing privileges revoked for a while but after having Kate proof read it for me before posting it and her telling me my posting grammar is absolutely ridiculous and hard to follow and how I had to have figured out how to turn off "Spell Check" which of course I would never even try such a monumentaly huge technical undertaking out of fear of really messing up my phone but it is what it is and sadly there is tons of fact upon which that post is made that if anything I understated the need to fix the problems we face now and they do in fact stem from our own stupidity.
This problem and others like it I made references to can only be fixed the same way they were made....day by day and from within the individual daily lives if we ever hope of truly fixing things its going to require dedication and perseverance as well as sacrifice.
One day at a time, one family at a time.
If people would stop passing the Buck and take ownership, then and only then will things turn for the better.
I always thought it's far better to let the results of your hard work speak for themselves.

We are entitled to our opinions remember that.I suspect that there are people, besides me, who took umbrage at part of your post. When you delved into your opinion on homosexuality, you did cross a line. But in today's environment, sadly, that is just to be expected.
I enjoy your tales of what it meant to play for DONU. Your views on homosexuality, not so much.
Yes, we are but remarks about homosexuality are crossing over into the areas that we are not supposed to be discussing on this board. That was my point. You know the big three: politics, religion and sexual preferences. Taboo. We are entitled to our opinions remember that.
Hold the phone..... are you telling me that it’s okay to have an opinion but NOT type it out????Yes, we are but remarks about homosexuality are crossing over into the areas that we are not supposed to be discussing on this board. Beer or virus? Both?Sometimes as a moderator I feel like a Communist minder. Did I just post that? I'm blaming the Rona.
