B1G about to have a "surprise" expansion.

Call me crazy, but I hate all of this consolidation. To me, 12 is the perfect number with 6 division of 6. 5 league games against your division, play half of the other division each year, and 4 non-con games.
I really don't know how this is going to play out in the long run. Maybe there is a good ending to all this. But at this point the above gives me a much better feeling about amateur sports than where this appears to be going. But maybe that's the rub.....they are no longer amateur sports. Maybe some of today's youngster's will feel much more comfortable with this layout, having grown up with it. I will still watch, and cheer, but I'm not sure the passion will be as great for me. Maybe so, but it's going to take some acclimating for me to get as emotionally invested as I once was I fear.

There will be potentially annual road trips between SoCal and Penn State, Rutgers, and Maryland. That’s a lot of miles. Wonder if that will be incentive to keep East and West divisions. Guessing the Huskers would rather play in Pasadena in November than New Jersey.
If this comes to pass, it seems to me that this has the potential to eliminate the schedule inequities that come from crossover scheduling. The 'New' West would be USC, UCLA, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Illinois. Each team plays all of its divisional opponents and three non-conference opponents of the program's choosing. The winner of the West and the East play each other in the B1G Championship game.

The passion will definitely go down for me. Switching to a new conference cost some old rivalries, which was a shame. But at least we could establish new ones. But the constant shifting and adding of new teams too far away to watch in person is really grinding me down.

I attended Nebraska's road game against USC in the LA Coliseum back when Cally was still our coach. Given all the iconic arial shots we've all seen of the Coliseum over the years, I was surprised when I saw the place up-close and personal. It's a dump. I've seen better looking and more modern high school stadiums. And to top it off, it's smack-dab in the middle of a bad part of the city. That would be a new 'conference' road game that I'd happily bypass to watch on TV.

Wow!
I don't know what your definition of a dump is but I was there a few months ago and I thought it was sparkly and clean, and iconic. Maybe they had let it go and recently upgraded.
The USC campus adjoining was especially beautiful as well.
But as you said the surrounding area, yech....its somewhere between Bangladesh and Beirut. Throw in a dash of Calcutta.

Edit: this explains it.

I love this and in no way feel like we’re done adding schools! Can’t wait to see the next move in this massive chess game between the SEC and B1G to make their conferences better by adding the best out there. Never saw this coming but believe it’s huge!

Question is who is next? Notre Dame is going to be target number one for both conferences and they’re absolutely going to have to make a choice. I see SEC going after southern/SEC teams and ND and I see B1G going after Big 12 and Pac 12 teams and of course Notre Dame.

Get Notre Dame and be done with it.

However,
16 teams gives you 2 8 team divisions with a playoff
20 teams is 2 10 team mini conferences
But, they are eliminating divisions so its going to turn into a playoff committee within the conference to determine which top teams they want in the CFP.
So, Nebraska ends up with the short end of the stick in all of this unless things turn around immediately.

Do you have a link that says they are doing away with the divisions? I read they are considering it only

Everything now is about money. Traditional matchups against your neighbors are out because they don't fit the new narrative. Goodbye Nebraska-Kansas. Hello Nebraska-USC.

Strictly talking fooftball, I'd much rather have a Nebraska-USC matchup versus Neb/Kansas

The speculation of those on the inside anymore (these days it’s sports talk guys and not message board guys and you have to listen close and read between the lines they throw in to keep their inside access) is divisions are going away. In fact all Big 10 schools have already submitted their preferred crossover games “should divisions go away”.

I give it a week before California state legislators make an issue of UCLA at least traveling to and participating in events in states whose political views and laws are not the same as LA's/California's.

The irony of this post is 100/10.
