Mark Whipple.

Balanced is having as much run production on offense as you do pass. When the stats at the end of the game are any where either way near 50/50 it's called balance on offensive production.
However look We were told a very specific set of parameters that this search was going to stay within and it didn't.
We thought things were all roses when it was Mickey As Passing Coordinator and a OC who would be the run game guy. And I think people put the cart before the horse and assumed it was Davis from Army that was going to blend that Triple Option into a more complete offense. The possibilities there is limitless.
Now we're going to run what everyone else is running and competing with those teams and man there is a bunch of them in the SEC and ACC and Everywhere else including the Big 10 who runs that "Pro Style" offense....god that makes me gag just saying it. So now we're all trying to get the same players.....where do you think we're gonna shake out ?.....

That's right....we will be scooping up the left overs from all the big boys of the SEC, etc. an I dunno bout you all but that sucks.

We will see who is right and who is wrong here in just over a year from today ...I can't ever stop being a Husker it's part of who I am but that don't mean I have to like it when I think some things have been decided to save someone's job.....not to make Nebraska.....NEBRASKA AGAIN !

That's more than my .02¢

Like we are just trying to be 1% better than everyone else at doing the exact same thing. Sorry, but that isn't the mindset that gave me pride in being a Husker fan growing up and I'm sick and tired of us trying to do it for the last 18 years.

I have no idea if Frost is deliberately trying to piss off the fans or what he's doing. He has got to be out of his freaking mind.
If I had to venture a guess, I think Frost still wants to prove his offense can be effective in the B1G with the right QB.
I honestly have shut off my phone cause so many guys who played at Nebraska are just mad as hornets and feel betrayed.
I realize that we're all venting our gut-reactions to the Whipple news but our feelings are valid.

Most Nebraska fans (including me) have been willing over the years to give our head coaches a shot at implementing their pass-happy offenses. First it was Callahan....then it was Riley....and now it is Scott Frost. I'm not so 'Old School' that I don't get that you have to keep defenses honest in this day and age of CFB. BUT Doc Holiday is absolutely right. Midwestern football is about adapting your offense to play in strong winds and cold weather. This ain't Florida or California.

The B1G is a ball control, RUN-HEAVY, "Win-The-Game-At-The-Line-of-Scrimmage" league. THAT (plus the money and prestige) is why I was so excited to see us join the Big Ten. The league fit us like a well-worn glove. But for the life of me, I do not understand why we have refused to embrace our heritage in the ten years we've been in the league and PLAY BIG TEN BALL!

It should be no mystery why we've failed miserably since joining the conference.

I have done nothing but answer the phone and return calls from pissed off people.

Seems like I am not the only one who got up grumpy.

To heck with this I'm gonna go for a hike and power down my frustrations.

That's it.....pink slip signed....were doomed to hug the bottom for the next 3-4 seasons.

I'm actually kind of excited about these hires.

Whipple is the experienced and steady hand Frost needs to run the offense. The notion he can't adapt his scheme to personnel, matchups, and situations seems kind of silly..

Raiola and Joseph have great skills and experience. Add a good special teams coordinator and things may be looking up.

It still all comes down to Frost. Can he get out of his own way and let his coaches coach? Time will tell.

I'm going to guess that MOST here don't loving running the ball for running the ball's sake. Most want to run it because they feel it is the most effective way to win. You can most likely include me in that grouping. Running the ball does lots of things. It often gives the defense a respite. It wears down the opposing defense. It is typically a safer way to move the ball (AM proved that wasn't always the case). It allows physically height challenged lineman to have their day. Recent history has also shown that in a conference like the BIG it allows lesser talented teams to compete on any given day.

Having said all that, I can also be persuaded that effective running the ball can be more important than high volume carrying the ball. In other words, if you only run 30% effectively, it has more impact on success than running the ball 60% ineffectively. Some will argue that the reason we have been unsuccessful in running the ball is because we haven't committed to it enough. I'm not sure if I'm in that camp or not. Imo whether you are effective in running the ball, or passing the ball, is often determined by how efficiently you do the other. It seems most successful (championship) offenses do both pretty well........even if the degree they do both varies.

In the end I can live with throwing the ball 40 times if it makes the time we run the ball more effective.........and translates to more wins. Of course the opposite is true for me as well. If we only throw 15 times a game, but it has the ability to make our running attack more productive........and translates to more wins.........I'll be just as happy.

For me the method hasn't been Scott's problem. For me the problem has been a combination of poor play calling, a lack of emphasis on detail, improper instruction on implementation of technique, and the inability to teach players how to read the field. ALL these are coaching issues. So if the replacements that Scott has hired do the above things, I don't really care how the wins come.........but they better come.

The next question in, can SF get out of his OC's F@#$%^& way?

SF hired an older dude who won’t be afraid to tell him back off, so I don’t think that will be a problem. If he gets too involved, tells SF to back off, and if SF doesn’t, he won’t put up with it, he’ll just leave.

Val, How's the Dogs doin ?
Yeah we're gonna be hacking against everyfreaking body for these pro type players and that spells trouble.

The guys transferring from the Defense bothers me, we get Cam Jurgens to finally play a fairly good season at Center now he's going...?.....this could be a complete new team next year and that's either good or bad.....good that whole new system with new faces all round or Bad cause you loose your anchor and experience up Front....

No one should expect even with the schedule we have next year to finish maybe at best just bowl eligible and I mean JUST ELIGIBLE.
It's gonna be rough In Lincoln next year I'm afraid.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from us both.

I think it is too early to make judgements about Whipple. He's now a Nebraska coach and I wish him the best. The nagging question in my mind is "why?" Not why did Frost select him, but why did he choose to abruptly leave Pitt? He is an East Coast guy. He just had his best season as an OC, grooming a Heisman candidate and winning a conference championship. Why does he leave that position for what is clearly a gamble to join Frost in a do or die situation in the Great Plains next year?
It's a curious move given the circumstances IMO.

I think most on this board agree that to win at a high level you need to be able to both run and pass. It looks to me like Frost has brought in the coaches necessary to put this mix together. Whipple has shown he can put together a potent passing game and Raiola knows how to put together a strong running game. MJ is a more than capable coach and excellent recruiter to boot.

Those who want to return to the TO offense need to get over it. It is not going to happen. Football has changed and those days are gone.

I'll happily give these new coaches a chance. But I don't believe people here are pining for a return to our tried-and-true "I" formation. But what I was expecting was that after four years, we'd have the makings of a kick-butt O-line and a few stud running backs like we used to see year after year after year. I'm sorry but Ramir is never going to be the second-coming of Roger Craig...or Mike Rozier...or Ahman Green...or Rex Burkhead....or even Ameer Abdullah. The stronger our running game, the less pressure we put on our QB.

I expected to see a Scott Frost running back like that freshman RB at Wisconsin. That kid is likely to bash us for the next year or two until he turns pro. THAT's the kind of back Nebraska used to recruit.

I’m mostly disappointed in the OLine— either we have recruited the wrong guys or our development is non-existent— or both

Wrong coach, calling the plays and coaching the line and QB coach. For the life of me I cannot understand why they did not replace AM when he was hurt. Frost is really a box of rocks. By the way we have had no development except for Jurgins, thats it.

I can't argue with any of that. A strong running game is a must. However, NU's system is so much different than Wisconsin they won't be putting together a running game like that. In truth, I think Wisconsin's system will keep them from ever being more than a good team. I don't think that is what we want to emulate.

The kid at Wisconsin is a freak, but he wasn't even recruited as a RB. He was moved because of injuries to their other RBs. IMHO with his running style he is doomed to injury. NU also has a habit of making many RBs look like the next OJ Simpson.

And you know this how? The head coach is the boss just like all of us have bosses. The head coach has the final say in all things football. He hired a guy he though could run his offense the way he wants it ran. He hired a guy he thought he could trust. Thats it plain and simple.
