Does anyone know about how much the football scholarships are worth, moneywise, and what is included in a scholarship?

My cousin and I were discussing this last night as well as the cost of higher education in general. His granddaughter will be attending college later this month. I remember when I attended NU I earned enough money working on the railroad in the summer to pay for the following school year plus have some spending money. No loans. No parental involvement.

As I remember, the cost of room and board (Schramm Hall) was $90 a month. In-state tuition was around $250 per semester and you paid about $18 per credit hour. Books were $200 or so per semester. The total cost of the entire school year was around $2,400-2,500. Is my memory faulty? Do any of the old-timers here recall what they paid in the 1960s?

when I started in 67 tuition was $216 a semester. If I could get used Engineering books they were about $50 total a semester, new about twice that. And I don't consider myself an "old timer". I am lucky to be my age (a cancer survivor and a "60s" survivor). And per my name here I have been thankful to watch the best college football program

I spent in the neighborhood of $2100 in the "55-'56 school year. That included everything from tuition to beer.

Current tuition:

In State: $8,978
Out of State: $24,098

On campus room and board plus meals runs around $11,000 a year

So just academics and R&B are around $35,000 annually

The student also receives a $3600 cash stipend

I've seen it argued that the real value of the scholarship should also include all of the training hours, gym access and tools, specialists, nutritionists etc etc.... so that, if a student had to pay out of pocket for ALL the benefits they receive for being a scholarship athlete, that the net value of that scholarship might be AT LEAST $100,000 a year.

To add a little perspective to that $2100...A hamburger was $ .25, beer- $ .10 a bottle, movie- $.50, gas about $.25/gal, a full meal about $1.75.
Averaging about 25x in tuition costs, now, thats 6.25 for a regular burger, 2.50 a beer, 12.50 a movie,6.25 for gas,no wonder there were gas wars and a full meal 31.25.
I like beer.

I didn't have to crank the car I was driving but did to start that old Oliver my brother had on his farm

I didn’t have to crank my car either. But I drove for a long time on a weak battery, wouldn’t hold the charge long enough to start car. I couldn’t afford a new battery. Almost all cars were straight sticks
and I always parked on a hill to utilize the “roll and start” technology or always made sure I had a few buddies around to push when there weren’t any hills to roll down.
