Who is Going to be the QB Next Year

I know this thread is about quarterbacks, and yes, I think Colandrea is a better fit for us. I also think we are relatively deep at that spot. But I do want to say that I think Dylan was a good (not great) quarterback for us given the offense he was in. I wouldn't be upset if he were coming back this year. But if losing him was the cost of getting Wade over Don, I am absolutely fine with that. It's a trade I would make every day and twice on Sunday.

I agree that Dylan as a good QB and I would assume he would have returned as a 'quicker blinker' as a junior. But he had two strikes against him that really hampered our offense against good B1G defenses: 1) Dylan lacked mobility and 2) he had poor pocket awareness. Once talented defensive ends got him in their sights, he was dead meat--he had horrible 'escape ability.' Frankly, he's the type of QB that you'd want our Blackshirt defense to go against. Mobile QBs give DCs headaches.

Seeing what we've done since we replaced Don with Wade, I wholeheartedly agree. The buzz I've heard is that Wade is The Real Deal, both as a coach and a star recruiter.

But I'd like to dispel the notion I'm starting to hear make the rumor rounds that we deliberately jettisoned Dylan to get rid of his OL coach uncle.

As I recall, the week after DR's injury, his younger brother, withdrew his commitment to Nebraska---which, by all accounts, caught Coach Rhule by surprise. As I also recall, that's when Daddy Dom tried to throw his weight around and demanded our QB coach be fired so that someone 'better suited' to coach his son could be hired.

Say what you want about Dylan. But he was here for two years. Shouldn't we have seen some improvement in pocket awareness? Its not all Dylans fault, you can lay some of the blame on the coaches also.

I wholeheartedly agree that our offensive passing woes last year were not all on Dylan.

But how do you 'coach' pocket awareness? It seems to me to be one of those peripheral vision qualities like 'court awareness' is for a basketball guard. Some players have it at an extraordinary level and some don't.

To me, it's an aspect of the whole 'quick blinker' thing. I think QBs get do better and better at making quick decisions as they get more game experience and mature. But for as many games Dylan played as a Husker, he didn't seem to improve much at that aspect of his game. Obviously, poor pass-pro by our tackles didn't help the situation.

I remember seeing a stat somewhere after the season that showed that our offensive line's overall pass protection had breakdowns at a rate that was above average--but not horrible horrible. The problem was our QB's inability to escape the rush. Unlike other teams, when the defense put on a rush, they ALWAYS got to Dylan. We were one of The Worst in the nation at escaping a breakdown.

Great catch, Hunch. Loved that article.

From it:
"...according to Pro Football Focus, the new Nebraska quarterback is one of the top returners at his position in the Under Pressure grade. Last year, he scored a 59.2 rating when he felt pressure in the pocket. Unsurprisingly, more often than not, this is when he decided to pull it down and take off, and his 68.3 run grade shows it went for a positive play more often than not."

It's especially noteworthy because -- as quality a QB as we had -- Dylan Raiola had to have had one of the worst Under Pressure grades in CFB last year. That difference could translate to more wins this fall.

I think the only reason Aikman transferred was because he broke his leg and then Charles Thompson (I believe) came in and took over and it was obvious he was going to be the starter the next year and Aikman would be on the bench. If he doesnt break his leg he probably doesnt transfer to UCLA.
This is correct. And the fact that his backup Jamelle Holieway led OU to the National Title as well. No way he was.starting the next year at OU.
