Upper Deck Golf @ Memorial Stadium

I'm being serious here...golf is the ONLY sport I watch on television outside of college football. Don't knock what you don't understand.

Put a little white dimpled ball into a hole anywhere from 150-450 yards away in as few strokes as possible. Yeah Johnny, real complicated that game of golf.

22 guys, half over 300 lbs, running into each other. Sometimes the weird-shaped ball is thrown, sometimes it's kicked, and sometimes they just take off running with it. The goal is to retain possession long enough to transport the ball 100 yards down the field without an opponent slamming into you and knocking you down. But they can't slam into you too hard. That is illegal. If you are unable to transport the ball the entire length of the field, bring in a 130lb specialist from a foreign country to kick the ball through a target. This will earn the team in possession of the ball half the points they would have earned if a real fast guy would have been able to run the ball into the area at the end of the field.

10 guys running up and down a hardwood court, trying to throw a ball into a 10' high, 18" diameter ring. One of the rules is the ball must be bounced by the player handling it, but at the highest levels of the sport, they just let them take off running 3, sometimes 4 steps in hopes they throw the ball in a downwards motion into the ring. That play is exciting, but it doesn't reward the team with as many points as if someone throws the ball in the ring from 24 feet away.

I don't think any of us on this board think it's possible to perfectly throw a football 60 yards in a tight spiral to a track star running at full speed. But pretty much every golfer on a par 3 believes if they just hit a pure shot, which is possible, they might get the ball in the 4 inch hole. Perfection in golf is both attainable and impossible. ..and part of the goal is to maintain your equanimity as your game swings wildly back and forth, often on the same hole.
Last Monday I had a par 4, 385 uphill all the way. Duck-hooked a drive that didn't get over 10 feet off the ground ending up 150 yards from the tee. Followed it up with a chunky 6 iron out of the rough that stayed in the left rough. Still about 180 away, another 6 iron left me about 30 yards from the flag. Chipped it in for a par. The scorecard said I got a par. Looks ordinary on the scorecard, but that saved my round. I was losing my mind. Golf is wild.

This perfectly describes golf. The addiction is palpable.

What I love about golf is it's a sport that you can hate your entire life.

Simple game indeed. How about they put trees, sand pits, and pools of water on a football or baseball field that impede players and what they are trying to do. Or instead of a flat surface (exception being the crown on a field) let's have elevated endzones or have a batter standing next to the plate that is 15 inches lower than his feet with the strike zone moving accordingly.

There is a lot more to the game than just "hit ball in hole."

Golf, the 2nd most boring "sport" in the universe.
Honestly I started watching Golf in 99 or 2000 when Tiger was tearing it up. And it was because he was a different type of golfer. He brought the fans, money, etc. He made every other golfer on the planet richer. Since he's been gone I rarely care to watch it. He would attempt and make impossible shots. Shots no one else would even attempt to make.

It's always been about the personalities. I was a big Tiger fan too. Before that, I was a huge Jack Nicklaus fan. I'll never forget watching The Golden Bear's comeback Masters' title at the age of 46. To this day, an absolutely amazing accomplishment.

For me golf is just too boring to watch. Tiger changed that for me. However since he's been largely out of golf for awhile it's boring again. I do like to play golf eventhough I'm horrible. Lol

I'm going to step on some shoes here, but I couldn't stand Tiger Woods when he was playing. He was the most foul-mouthed, hot-tempered player in the history of golf (in his prime) and today's game has many players emulating his behavior now. I don't think it's a coincidence the US Ryder Cup team was a combined 1-7 with him as a team member and his individual record was 13-21-3 despite being possibly the greatest golfer of all time. He was a me-first player and could never adapt to being a team player.

Here's the rub. Part of my disdain for Tiger was because I golf left-handed and was always a huge fan of Smiling Phil Mickelson, his biggest rival. Turns out I spent 20 years cheering for the one golfer that was a bigger A-hole than Tiger! :ashamed0001:
