Uenth's Finally Getting Her New Kitchen!!!

My Labor Day tradition is to make an apple pie, including crusts, from scratch and invite my oldest brother over for apple pie Ala mode. I invited him thinking that our kitchen would be finished and I didn't understand that there would be a time delay on countertops due to using quartz. So today it was time to make the apple pie. The biggest issue was where to roll out the crust. I finally figured out that our largest cutting board was the best I was going to come up with. Wasn't horrible but wasn't particularly fun either, but I got the pie made. It's in the oven baking and smells heavenly. Here's my uncooked pie for y'all to salivate over.20260906_121542.jpg

Today was a great productive day for my contractors. There was a small section of floor in the entryway that still needed a new subfloor. That got finished, a lot of misc clean-up (contractors, not me -- I clean stuff up every day), pulls installed on cabinetry and, best of all, my pantry is now installed in the entryway, err the kitchen annex. We won't see them, probably, until next week as flooring is ordered but not in and that's our next step. Then it should be trim installed, a bunch of clean up, they have to fix a screen they ripped and replace the filter type thing in my microwave that the drywallers destroyed and some little piddly things. After the floor is installed, the only really big thing left is getting the countertops installed and sink connected to the water line. So, I can truly see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thought I was going to have drapery people in tomorrow to talk about what they can do on my big window (I just don't want to mess with it, hardware involved and just ick) but we don't have trim on the window so how could we even figure out what we can do? so I called today and rescheduled for the 29th. It's all good. Countertops are scheduled for installation on the 23rd.20260908_160917.jpg

Been a while since I've updated. I'm sure Fumble thinks it's over and done with since I was sure this would be done in 3 weeks. Last week was horrendous. We saw our contractor for about 90 minutes on Friday and that was it. I was spitting nails but outwardly kept my temper and composure. Mostly I was concerned that things wouldn't get finished by COB today that were must haves because the countertops and sink are scheduled for installation tomorrow between 8:30 and 10:30. Our plumber has us down for his last service call of the day to connect water to the new sink. That is huge as that means no more schlepping up and down the stairs 2 or 3 times a day to wash pots/pans, cutting boards and my worst nightmare, as far as tripping on the stairs, our very sharp cutting knives.

Anyway, 2 great days from our contractors this week and everything is ready for installation tomorrow. Flooring is due in Monday (barring further shipping delays), no word on when the tile for the backsplash will be in so I'll call tile place in the morning and see what's shaking with that. Once we get through tomorrow, we truly are fast approaching the finish line. I am absolutely blown away by the transformation in our kitchen. It looks like we enlarged it and we absolutely did not. I think the paint color and white cabinets help in that aspect, along with getting rid of that behemoth of a butcher block as well as omitting the lazy Susan cabinet on the lower level also increased our traffic flow pattern. Hub and I still haven't been in there with both dogs. I've banned him from the kitchen until the new flooring is installed. They do a great job of cleaning their work area before departing but I have no desire for hub to step on an errant nail and get a new infection in one of his feet. He's stuck his head in and is in agreement with me that it's an incredible kitchen in the works.

Anyway, attaching pics of the cabinets with crown molding in place and both banks of windows trimmed out. It really is fast becoming a gorgeous kitchen and I could not be more pleased with it!!!20260922_170501.jpg 20260922_170646.jpg 20260922_170524.jpg

Installers are hard at it. Just got a quick peak at the granite and it looks sensational. Plumber here late this afternoon to connect the water. Starting to feel like a kitchen again!!!

20260923_181141.jpgYes, we have running water again. Couldn't get my picture to upload. Finally showed up in my inbox this morning. Our plumber was here a little after 4 and got the water connected. Hoping the flooring arrives on Monday as a lot of the trim doesn't get put in until after the flooring is installed. Flooring and backsplash are our two biggest needs at this point and I'm not concerned a bit about both. Will be glad to have them in so we can get this wrapped up but I have plenty to occupy me for the foreseeable future. Check out the how deep the sink is. Can't believe the cabinet guy found that baby for me!!! BTW, the yellow in this picture is basically a true representation of our paint. Most of the other pictures the yellow comes through much darker. It's basically the color of lemons and that's what this picture shows. Yeah!!1

I'm glad to see you're on the home stretch, Uenth.

I have listened to the Fumble Angel on my shoulder instead of the Fumble Devil on the other as this process has moved along. Why? Because Mrs Fumble and I have "been there and done that." For whatever reason, it's NEVER easy.

Glad you listened to the Fumble Angel. We are way over the time frame that we agreed upon before the job started. I was good with the delay with the electrician and because we had to spray foam insulation vs stapling insulation to the floor boards. I started getting frustrated when his dry wallers that apparently he thinks are the greatest thing since slice bread decided 2-1/2 to 3 hours constitutes a full days work. That cost us about a week in time but it appeared we were going in the right direction but last week just about did me in as we got a whopping 90 minutes worth of the contractor's time. I was pretty steamed at this point plus really concerned about things even being ready for the countertop guys yesterday as part of what they finished on Tuesday had to be done before the countertop could be installed. Thankfully we got 2 good days of work on Monday and Tuesday and what needed to be done was finished. Still have a lot of things to be taken care of. A little more crown molding to be installed, flooring, backsplash, kick plates on all the cabinets installed, touch up painting by painter, no venting yet for HVAC and, if that's all the major stuff, which I think it is, then we go to the punch list of deficiencies. Not too big of a list at this point: one screen got ripped and needs to have screening replaced, one of the filters on the nuke was destroyed by drywallers, a lot of dings on refrigerator and stove. Think they did a pretty good job on taking care of our appliances, most of the dings came from the freakin' drywallers, whom I would never EVER allow them to set foot on our property even. Contractors could but only if they agreed that we are their only job until the project is completed. We didn't realize that he bounces around between 3 and 4 jobs at once plus uses way too many subs and that's a breeding ground for delays.

Overall, I'm still glad they were our contractors as the finished product is way better than what I envisioned it could possibly have been. They did get our vision and you cannot put a price on that. I'm also thrilled that it's the last room in our house that needs major remodeling so if I'm lucky I won't need the services of contractors again. That's certainly our hope at least!

20260929_163045.jpg 20260929_163059.jpg Two more pictures. Crazy day as contractors were here all day, Drapery Den came to measure for window treatments and, as contractors were leaving, mower arrived to get us mowed. A lot of commotion.

A good day overall though as flooring down, mostly. 2 boxes were damaged in shipping so contractor refused those and HD has 2 replacement boxes on order which should arrive next Monday so we're hoping they will be here on Tuesday then to wrap everything up. They installed all the flooring they had, got all the kick plates installed under the cabinets and finished the crown molding. A good day's work, IMO.

First picture shows the flooring but, more importantly, you can know see the dog food container hiding in its little niche they designed for me so my dog food storage container no longer sits out in the entry way, blocking the bottom doors of the pantry. Second shot just shows a better picture of the flooring and the kick plates in place.

We both finally feel like we are just about through this renovation with sanity mostly inta

@Uenth good to see your new kitchen is coming along and that apple pie looks positively divine!!!

Regarding the landscaping I am having done around my house, the concrete has been done for about a month, but the rocks in front, the bricks in back, and the turf install have been delayed for so long because we've been getting so much rain! Don't get me wrong, we definitely need the rain as this is a desert climate, but I'm just like, can I please get like two weeks of dry weather so the gal doing this can actually get everything done?

Omaha has all the rain you want, come and get it!
Yeah, Omaha and Lincoln pictures are crazy scary!!! My niece lives not far from Bryan East in Lincoln and she had about 4 inches of water in her basement to deal with. We had some reports of low level flooding in GI, underpasses not safe to drive through and some intersections were flooded but NOTHING like the film I saw in Lincoln and Omaha. Truly terrifying! Glad all are safe and sound!

Thanks for the props on my pie. My brother always says to me "Sis, you make a damn fine pie." That is high praise indeed from him and it tickles me to no end that he refers to me that way. It's always "Sis", Don't know why and I don't call him "Bro" and my other brother calls me by my first name so dunno where he got that. Doesn't offend me. Just interesting to me though.

Glad to hear that your landscaping project is underway. Can't wait to see the pictures when it's finished. Always fun to see what other posters have going on in their lives.

In kind of a holding pattern. Had a real cluster*ck on our tile for the backsplash. Whoever wrote up my order couldn't bother to tell me that a deposit was required. After 3 weeks, I called to inquire on status and the woman on the other end of the phone took rudeness to an entirely new level. Finally told me that the order hadn't been placed because no deposit was put down. We've done business with them before and no deposit was required. More importantly, we were not told a deposit was required. The woman thanked me for my business and told me they would "call when the tile was in" so I was beyond p*ssed, needless to say.

I was going to go without a backsplash but the cabinet place also has access to tile so I've spent a ton of time this week trying to get the tile situation resolved, going through the cabinet place. Thought I had and when my helper quoted me the price yesterday, I almost chocked on my non-false teeth but decided to forge ahead since I don't plan on ever replacing said tile. The gentleman who came and measured for our cabinets saw our tile order and texted me since it wouldn't have been a whole lot more to do what is called a full backsplash in the quartz we used for countertop. I asked him how high the tile was measured for and when he texted back 18" I understood why the invoice was so pricey. We had the standard 6 or 8 inch backsplash in our old kitchen and I assumed (bad on me) that was what we were getting. I went out and measured and we only have 14" between countertop and bottom of window framing so it wouldn't fit anyway. More importantly, I don't want that much tile to begin with. It's about 1/3 of the cost of the full backsplash to back it down to 4" and use the same quartz as the countertop so that is what we are up to. Probably another 2-3 weeks before that will be cut and installed.

Also, the truck with our replacement 2 boxes of flooring was delayed and didn't get here as scheduled so now we are scheduled for contractor to be over on Monday to finish the flooring and trim as well as a few items on our punch list. Hopefully they will finish up on Monday. We'll be able to have the painter come in and do touch up and then it will be done except for the backsplash. Drapery Den is working on our window treatments which should be ready in another 2 weeks tops so we truly are almost finished with the reno. I spent Wed. afternoon, organizing the pantry. Highest shelf for extra paper products (napkins, towels and plates) as well as backups on condiments and such. One shelf just for cereal as I like variety and have 4 flavors and hub has 3 flavors he likes). One shelf for baking, one for pasta, cooking spices and the few canned goods we buy. One shelf for my canned tomatoes and some other odds and ends and the bottom shelf for all my different flours, all-purpose, bread flower, wheat flower, cornmeal, etc). Filled that baby up completely. Each shelf does have room if I need to add anything but it's real easy to find what I need now. I found these little basket things at Ace and. bought 3 of them. One for baking spices, one for cooking spices and one for onions and potatoes as I didn't want to put those veggies on the shelf. Too easy for one to turn bad, which leaves a nice stain on the wood. If that happens, just need to wash the little basket and no permanent stains in my pantry.

For my purposes, the kitchen is fully functional. This is just window dressing stuff that has to be completed. Anyway, the kitchen is so much better than I anticipated. I still can't wrap my head around how much bigger it looks. Part of it is loosing that behemoth of a butcher block. I also think omitting the lazy Susan on both top and bottom cabinets increased our accessible area of the kitchen so that also helped. The rest is pure illusion, thus my painting the walls yellow and opting for white finishes on the cabinets, making it appear much larger than it actually is. I actually enjoy working in there now and I certainly did not before. Even the after meals clean ups aren't anything to be dreaded. I love going in there and getting everything wiped down, stove top cleaned and dishwasher running after our last meal of the day. Haven't enjoyed our kitchen like this since we moved here from Leavenworth, almost 21 years ago, Sheesh have those years flown by.

I don't want to hijack your thread, Uenth, but you've hit on one of my hot buttons: Customer Service (or should I say, TOTAL lack of any.)

FWIW, I have always believed that high quality customer service is The Best Advertising a company, organization, or institution could ever have. Yet I've been appalled at how EVERYBODY now treats customer services as something so unworthy of attention that: a) it's the lowest paid jobs with the worst possible people doing them; b) it can be poorly "AI"ed; or c) left for the customer/client to do themselves.

Unfortunately "good service" costs money and companies try to figure out ways to squeeze the cost out of it. More often than not once I get into automated service (via phone or chat) I give up. Give me the website and I'll figure it out.

Doesn't work for service industries like kitchen remodeling - but I self serve as much as possible to avoid AI, bots, automated phone systems as much as possible.

Off shoring customer services call centers was the hot ticket 10 years ago. Now it is AI.

After wasting ten minutes of my time trying to get AI to understand my question, I ask the AI 'attendant' to transfer me to a real person and am told it cannot complete my request.
LOL Fumble. I've asked AI a couple of questions and they can't find the answer. I always giggle on that!
