THE PRESS CONFERENCE

Ok I was wondering how long it would be before someone brought that up....yes I did state that Along with some of my teammates we would do what we could to block his return.....myself was for purely personal reasons. Now once the season got rolling and the way things unfolded .....A couple as in 2 of my teammates who were the vocal leaders of our class of Blackshirts got wind of my feelings through my Wife, and the 2 of them went out of their way to reach out to me and talk.....we basically set up and had a ex-players team meeting when we were all in Lincoln for a game and the celebration of our groups accomplishments....

Boy let me tell you.....there were lots of harsh words.....some yelling and shouting just like we had never been apart....alot of things got worked through and aired out amongst our group....one of them was what I was so upset about. We all understood then that The Program was at a crossroads of sorts....in our opinion we were very near rock bottom.....little did we know that the bottom would come rushing up to meet us just a few short days later...
See every guy on that Defense was like a brother to each other.....it was a tight bond that went way deeper than blood even.....I know that sounds impossible but it's true.....and might be one of the reasons we were able to accomplish some of the things we did......?......anyway long story short we all to a man decided that once again we needed to put all personal feelings on hold and move forward as one group like we did when playing together for the good of the program and school.

We owe our Coaches and the University everything we became and are today.....and we were not about to let personal feelings change who we are at the core......so the decision was made to get behind the University and to do whatever was needed to assure the success of the Football Program going forward......no matter what was asked of us we would do what was needed, if Scott Frost was to get the job of head Coach that means supporting him and helping anyway we are asked or needed to.....

Hence the change in my personal feelings..... now make no mistake my feelings are still there.....I'm still pissed at him but really there is nothing that could EVER be done about it now.....the dead are still dead.....and no matter how much we would like to....we can't turn back the hands of time and just undo things that happened years ago....so I have delt with it.....brought it out into the light with my teammates and we all talked it over....there were tears, sadness but yet peace in sharing my feelings with my brothers....little did I know how many of them felt the same way but felt bad for me and were afraid to bring it up....so a lot of healing occurred in that room that day.....and brought us all just as close as we once were....that was a very unexpected surprise.

It was hard telling you all that but at least now you understand what's up....thanks for your patience and understanding....and to those who don't care....that's cool I get it.....just don't expect mercy where none is given in turn.

Doc.

Don't care what anyone else says or thinks...takes a whole lot of man to put this out there.

Thanks for honest reply.

I'm still pissed at him but really there is nothing that could EVER be done about it now.....the dead are still dead.....and no matter how much we would like to....we can't turn back the hands of time and just undo things that happened years ago....so I have delt with it.....

Doc.

Thanks for sharing your feelings with that post.

Question.......as to the bolded, does that specifically mean LP?

If you don't feel like sharing more I understand.

Thanks for taking the time to address this Doc, had wondered several times what caused the change but didn't feel it was my place to ask. Sidenote: it gets me in the feels that you guys are that tight, even still today. People who say friends are like family a lot of times forget that families fight harder amongst themselves than friends do. GBR and Long Live the Blackshirts.

Thanks for sharing your feelings with that post.

Question.......as to the bolded, does that specifically mean LP?

If you don't feel like sharing more I understand.

Yes it does.....

How 2 guys, from such completely different backgrounds could wind up such good friends ?.....who in the heck knows.....maybe because I knew how gifted he truly was and if he gave Less than 110% in practice and scrimmage, Man it really made me mad that he was taking it easy cause he didn't wanna hurt me....well I'm not programed or wired quite right in the first place ....but when I could tell he was letting up...man I blew my cork.....yelled at him and stuff it scared a lot of our teammates....they had no idea I had that kind of anger or voice......

Well we had to run that same dive play again till he got it right and there I was to fill the hole...again....and I have to be honest here.....I've laid the wood to some guys more than a time or 2 and when we met in the hole...he hit me so freaking hard....and the noise from our collision....drew ohhs and aahhhhhs from the whole field....even sportscasters conducting interviews we're stopped in their tracks to see what caused that noise.....anyway he hit me so hard .....still to this day I do not remember what happened for the 5 min or so after that hit.....I never blacked out or was un responsive , my teammates were all like jumping and yelling.....coaches were high fiving me....it was awesome....I guess lol.....anyway from that day on L.P. and I were buds. He respected my "no back down" attitude and my toughness....and several years after he got Drafted and he was still playing ball in the NFL....he told me over the phone during one of his "never knew when" phone calls....that hit in practice that day was still including his time in the NFL the hardest anyone had ever hit him.... I respected his god given talents....speed....power....elusiveness he was the total PKG of size, vision and power ......honestly there will never ever be a back that can come close to the type he was...there just won't ever be one close period.

I still to this day look in the mail box for letters from Kern Valley

Here is something I bet none of you would believe......I would trust him with my families lives more than just about anyone......even today.

I still wonder had Frost done exactly what Coach Osborne told him too....and kept out of the whole McEwen situation.....but we will never know.....

had we not gotten separated after the Meechicken St. Game back in Lincoln.....maybe I could have de-fused the situation.....

at the very least grabbed a 2x4 and conked him in the head and drug his butt home.....I actually blamed myself for a long time for not going looking for him.....
But hey it's all been hashed over and talked over and it's a moot point now and had been for some time....mostly my own anger, looking for answers.

Doc.

Cool. Again, thanks for your honesty and perspective.

Not to get off topic, but LP's life was just a tragic tale all the way around.

Mad respect, Doc, for sharing this.

Yes it does.....
Doc.
Doc, hope it's cathartic for you to share this. I hope if you haven't that you find peace with it one day, and even with Scott. We all have moments in time (of varying severity) we wish we could have influenced differently. Hard not to do since hindsight is 20/20. I try to use the negative from the past to create good in the future. Easier to do with some situations than others.

Cool. Again, thanks for your honesty and perspective.

Not to get off topic, but LP's life was just a tragic tale all the way around.

You have no idea how much ......people forget he was a person who through no fault of his own had been thrust into a really bad situation.....that he even survived it to make it out of that area alive is a huge deal.

Doc.

Ok to put this all in perspective and put it away where it belongs....mostly because yes it's still very hard for me...he was way more than my friend.....he was my brother ....skin color did not ever have even the smallest of impact on who we were to each other, at least on my part....I would like to think he felt the same way but you never heard him say a word about things like that.....but when he called you his "dog" or his brother from another mother it was more than just a saying.....when you got eye contact with him......you knew he meant it like we were family. When you did the "Bro" hug.....you could tell he meant it ..... he and I were like two leaves from the same tree.....

The very first person at my side when I got hurt was none other than L.P. .....we lifted together....and worked out together but that fateful day it just so happened he had a meeting that ran long and he said to go ahead.....neither of us wanted to do stadium steps for being late to weight training in July for God's sake but he said to go ahead without him and he would catch up.......well the rest you know except he was the first guy that came to my aid when I heard that internal pop and feeling like a electrical shock run through my spine and then all I felt was a numb tingling sensation....I knew right away something bad had happened and so did Lawrence....but he kept me cool calm and collected till the Ambulance got there and he didn't leave my side till they stopped him from the emergency room doors because he wasn't blood...... family.....
I can remember quite plainly what he said to the male nurse who stopped him at the doors.....he said "Blood relative !.....he's my brother can't you see we look alike ?...." Through the laughter at the doors he also said...."man he is my best friend can't I go in there till the Doctors come or his family ......something ?" I will never forget what he said because of how he said it.....he was scared and frightened and alone.....it's the only time I EVER heard him sound that way and I hollered out to him "It's ok man.....they ain't taking me anywhere but they don't come get you first so jus chill bud....it's gonna be cool " .....last thing I remember after that was the look of relief on his face as he gave me the peace sign through the window and hollered back that he would be right there should I need him or sumthing......

Anyway Lawrence is gone now and there is no bringing him back or un-doing the stuff he did do.....he was sorry he did it and we had talked several times with Coaches Osborne and Darlington, there was a plan in place to get him back in Lincoln where he could be part of the fabric of the Huskers somehow and try to get him into some good programs.....but.....well we all know how that wound up. ....funny thing about that whole sequence of events...... Everything was going perdy good for him and then the letters stopped and I tried to set up a call visit with him....
And next day he is being charged with murder.....then shortly after he is found in his cell hung...... Now I dunno bout you all.....
But something is rotten as hell about that whole sequence of events......but I gotta let it go.....it ain't good to keep going over and over all that nonsense....it's not going to bring him back or make him a saint over night.....he knows.....I know.....and I am sure some of you have a fairly good idea.....but we move on and take what we get.....what doesn't kill us......only makes us stronger.

Thanks for your kindness and words of encouragement.....but it's time we all move on and focus on what we can do now......not what we could or should have done.

Doc n Kate.....

Hey after all this is a Husker Football Forum......time to get out from under all that baggage and get on with life among the living......
Really Charlie it's me who should thank you.....you knew I think there was more to this than met the eye and in your sneaky good way.....you did a really good thing for me...and I will never forget you for it......and for me......never is a really long time..

Doc.

Thanks Doc. You are an incredible person that I would love to meet someday. I know all of you were brothers. Those years in the mid 90s I was attending school there as well. Man you all were the best.

It's kinda strange holding 2 National Championship Rings and saying to my self......look how far a few idiots we trusted to keep what was built by all of us moving along smoothly has fallen....
Hey we weren't perfect but we could play a little ball.....but jeez to have to stand by and watch everything we sweat, bled and worked for get torn apart by Steve Pederson and Harvey Pearlman......was just more than some of us could tolerate.....nobody was going to air dirty laundry about those 2 blooming idiots even after it could so obviously be laid at their feet.....
Something else we need to get cleared up.......Bo Pelini had several faults true but the man was not a liar...
A lot of his rant to his players in the gym that day was gospel truth.....it got down played and "no comment" references from every place it could come from.....so while he truly had his faults.....lying about Coach Osborne's situation with Pearlman and Eichorst.....was not among them period.
It should be obvious that he indeed was .....how to say it......?....pushed......no not strong enough.....shoved (is a better word) out as A.D. .....someday mark my words the truth will come out.....also knowing how Pearlman and Eichorst did things....
The stuff we hear about Who was really pulling the strings during Coach Riley's time as head coach......is more than likely why after Bounds and Green finished their examination of "the Athletic Dept" that Eichorst was canned...... Someday it will all come out in the wash.....as for Coach Osborne not saying anything....he is not wired that way.....he wouldn't say crap even if he had a mouth full.....he just cares too much for the University and what it stands for.....his generation we're not ones to make a big public deal out of things like this.....he would rather keep quiet and work from the outside in and hope for the best.....that's just the type of decent guy he is......so don't ever expect him to come forward .....that's just not who he is.....he would rather fix it behind closed doors and just move on with your head held high......and nobody can fault him for that.

Just thought while we were clearing the air.....now might be a good time to be sure at least some of you all heard my ideas on why things have gone the way they have......but the air is much clearer now.....and Frost Warnings every where you turn.....
Things are a fixing to get cleaned up and put back in order real.....danged.....fast......
Go Big Red baby......HUSKER..... POWER......HUSKER.......POWER......
WE ARE ABOUT TO BE.....BACK IN BLACK BABY......BLACKSHIRTS THAT IS !
