Thanks for interjecting some much needed levity. Man, this has been a long, dang season. What do you call a basement full of Husker fans?
….. a whine cellar
I agree, Linving! I think the 'elephant in the room' that impacted the players, the coaches, the pundits, and especially the fans was UCF's magical second season. While we all knew it was unique, I strongly suspect that in the back of everyone's mind was "Hey, it could happen here too!" So when adversity hit, it hit HARD.I have begrudgingly come to the conclusion that this is going to take more than 18 months to two years to rebuild. Scott Frost is a good football mind and a smart guy. He loves the program and loves the state. He understands what it is going to take to bring the program: FIRST, back to respectability and SECOND: winning championships.
Nebraska success wasn't built on short term success. It was built on methodical, careful building of a program designed to succeed. Certain administrative leadership (or lack thereof) from 2000 until 2017 scuttled the foundations of that success. Tom Osborne tried to restore it with Pelini. Unfortunately he didn't realize that Bo, while a decent football coach, was also nuts. But we can not underestimate the damage done by Steve Pedersen and Sean Eichorst under Harvey Perlman.

But it wasn't just an elephant in the room, because it came from Frost himself in the Spring of 2018.I agree, Linving! Can't argue your point, Jarhead. So, we need to acknowledge that it wasn't just fans and media setting up the expectations, but Frost himself. He is the guy everyone trusts, so when he says things like this people take note.
But it wasn't just an elephant in the room, because it came from Frost himself in the Spring of 2018.
“Year two is when it’s gonna take off around here – and taking off doesn’t mean we’re gonna go undefeated, but we’ll be a really good team in two years.”
We’re going to be better this year, and judging by what I saw this spring, by Year 2, we’re going to be really dangerous.”
And, he re-emphasized it again after the 2018 season was over:
“I think we’ll surprise people with how much better we get and how quickly it happens.”
So, we need to acknowledge that it wasn't just fans and media setting up the expectations, but Frost himself. He is the guy everyone trusts, so when he says things like this people take note. His claims are now working against him, because we all know how many people think about failed predictions. Many people are fine giving Frost a pass on his prediction, because of the mess the program is in. But some people want to know how/why he was wrong about year 2. And if he was wrong about year 2 progress, what else will he wrong about?
But....we didn't. And the difference comes down to 'intangibles' like team chemistry and coaching.I realize this is an if and a BIG IF, we had won at CU (should have), Indiana (could have) and Purdue (could have), the Huskers would be a 7 win team right now. I don't think we'd be considering ourselves world beaters or necessarily "back" , but I think all of us would be saying that improvement is being made.
Miami and Florida State says "hello"Anybody can go undefeated at UCF with all that talent in-state playing in a weak conference and whatnothaveyou.

And Frost wouldn't be the only coach to get a mistaken read on his team, because sometimes there are things brewing behind the scenes that are disguised. And, some situations with players (Mo Washington, Andre Hunt, etc) would have been hard to predict. I have misread teams that I have coached, mainly in select softball, and I have had some talented teams that have ended up struggling in areas that I didn't see coming. One thing I learned, when asked for predictions about my teams, I would respond with: "We will see. The team has potential, but there is a lot I don't know about how this team will come together, and how tough the League will be this season." I think Frost should say a little less sometimes, and not be so eager to proclaim how the future will go. The "dangerous in two years" and Big10 adjusting to us" quotes really don't help anything much at all, and just serve to set expectations that are now coming back to bite him a little.....Can't argue your point, Jarhead.
In retrospect, I think Frosty may have vastly overestimated the progress of his team compared to his previous three teams instead of the manhood-testing reality of the Big Boy Big Ten schedule Nebraska faces each week.

Frost tenure at Oregon was WR QB coach and OC under Helfrich. He was a position coach under Kelly. Can't argue your point, Jarhead.

We need to run the ball tween the tacklesLook everyone just to be clear.....I am still of a mind that Scott will get us back where we belong but with that being said....you gotta start someplace and the bottom line is moving the Ball on offense requires several things I think we all can agree on that fact but if you cant run the ball and not be so stuck on one style of play your in big trouble period. The Quicker Scott puts his own agenda down and decides this is what I know worked here before, there is no earthly reason it cant work now.....and RUN THE DANG BALL !
DOC HOLIDAY
I harbor no bad feelings any longer where Scott is concerned and Knowing how UBER ULTRA COMPETITIVE he is whats happening has got to be making him nutz a little. My only complaint all along is I guess what style Offense we are seeing is not what we were told we would see and I quote.... "A up to date modern version of what we ran here when all of us played here" and I might add when he said that to the room full of teammates and other Cornhusker Players from other classes besides ours who welcomed him home....the room erupted in thunderous applause and shouts ....now I know he is still getting "his guys" and give him leeway for that but man he really needs to take a page from Coach Osborne and Tenopir's books and get our linemen fired up about running the ball, a quote that hung on Uncle Milts wall said simply this one message...."Hard Work beats Talent Everyday in Everyway!"....recently I had occasion during some quiet one on one time, just being guys who love to hunt to remind him of that Saying hanging on the wall.....I hope he took it to heart and understands soon that here its far far easier to get guys who will turn into human road graders if treated right and taught right and most of all to RUN THE BALL....our linemen of my day played so tough that honestly the Equipment assistants could run the ball in a game and I am not poking fun.....I freakin hated having to go against our top line rotation......man them dudes were fat, nasty and strong as hell....and would flat beat the stuffin out of you if you didnt stay outta their way !
I know also you young guys get tired of hearing me drag up the mid 90s but that is what I know and my reference point so I in all honesty cant speak to anything else with first hand knowledgebase, I dont bring it up because thats when we were great.....trust me we have been running the ball down peoples throats longer than alot of you have walked this earth....no offense intended its just the facts.
I feel for Scott and wish to God I could find some quick magical formula to fix whats wrong but this is the real world and only patience and head down hard work will get it done.....and I honestly believe in my Heart that Scott Frost and a dominating power run game is the right path to take to GET us back where we should be.
Just my own opinion you understand but as long as I have a voice Im gonna stomp and pound this till my point gets home....or the powers tbat be tell me to shut the hell up what ever comes first I guess....lol.
