The “Sellout Streak” in jeopardy?

OMG - Dylan ate the streak!!

:happy0188:

In re: the sellout streak: I think it is important to keep going. For people mentioning empty seats, there is a difference between the stadium being sold out and actually attending the game. Sometimes people buy the tickets and for whatever reason don't make it to the game--it happens.

I will say this: Start winning again and this topic won't come up any more. It would also help if in our non-conference slate we'd actually play someone. Playing New Mexico Institute For The Blind in OOC isn't the kind of opponent that will generate ticket sales.

I'm at the point that it's ok if it "officially" ends. We all know, given today's world of fandom, that our streak WILL NEVER be broken.

So...let's garner all of our enthusiasm towards what we really want...successful sporting programs at DONU, and not into anymore, although "prestigious", otherwise meamingless "record."

For the reasons many have said above, the streak gives me serious “participation trophy” vibes. The fans did their best but ultimately couldn’t keep it going, so a bailout happened (who know how many times) that propped up their ego.

Yeah...kind of like "the Wave"...at some point people are going to call it quits.

We've talked 'the streak' to death in numerous threads over the years. But GIJoe's comment about "meaningless records" prompts me to add one last take on the issue:

Over the course of my lifetime, we've all been increasingly hit time and time again, to the point of being overwhelmed on a daily basis, with absolute, irrefutable falsehoods and bogus "records."

But a football sellout streak is the "enough is enough" hill we're ready to die on?

Okay, I got that out of my system. 'nuff said.

Why not? You gotta die somewhere.

It's like this is your first time reading a football forum at the end of a long off-season. lol

Hang in there, Doc. Only nine more days.

Meaningless in only that...since it will never be beat, it's pointless to argue with someone trying to say taking $0.01 from $1.00 is a real big issue...it's not.

We own it, and we'll always own it. Just like Kool Aid and Arbor Day.

I am amazed that it lasted this long. Not because the team is not as good as it used to be but other factors. First, in the old days, NU would be on TV maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Now they are on every week. Now I can watch every game without fighting traffic, freezing my butt off or sweating in 90-degree heat. Tickets used to be $15, now they want your first born. Last, I don't have to sit next to the 300 lb guy who only bathes twice a year.

Obviously winning will make it easier for the streak to continue. You still have to create buzz with an appealing Non-Con schedule. We should schedule two power conference games, and maybe The Ray Charles Institute or Polio Poly Tech as the third game.
Why not schedule two of the old Big 8 teams? Mizzou, OU (scheduled), K-State, KU, Iowa St, and Colorado and rotate them. Yes, we would have to travel on different years, but that would be such an opportunity to travel without booking airfare and at most a one day overnight stay. Most could be done in one day. Right now the only feasible away game is Iowa, the next closest is Illinois this year. We have always enjoyed visiting those above teams while in the Big 8 and 12. Yes, we would lose a home game, but we would renew some old rivalries. Those times when we won’t have a home game, why not book a major concert for Memorial stadium at night, weather should be great for those early Sept. dates. Need to add some spark to the game with our old Big 8 friends. Devil be dammed if we should worry about scheduling teams that could beat us early in the season. Those non con games now are as exciting as watching NFL exhibition games.

I don't know if the idea got dropped or not, but I had thought I'd heard that the success of the Arrowhead game in KC was prompting organizers to look at annual 0 week games that would feature B1G Nebraska or SEC Missouri against the likes of KU or K-State on an annual basis (or Mizzou vs the Huskers.)

Those match-ups would be guaranteed sellouts and an economic boon to Kansas City.

That would be fun. Don't know why they aren't looking at it!

I'm split on this. I love the fact that it continues albeit in name only because we all know not all seats are filled eventhough all tickets are sold.

At the same time it's a detriment to.the program. The AD and Regents know the fans don't want to see this streak end. So we fans keep spending money to make sure the stadium sells out so the AD and Regents take the fans and program for granted. Once we decide to keep our wallets closed and this streak officially ends it will rock Nebraska and perhaps the nation to it's core. We keep hiring mediocre coaches. The university doesn't want to shell out the money to pay for good coaching. Which has cost us over 20 years of worse than mediocrity. End the streak and things will change. It will get the attention of those who.need to be slapped in the face the most. The leadership. Once they stop taking us and the program for granted we will get back to our winning ways.
