Super Official Nebraska/Penn St. Game Week Thread.

Honestly thought Holgerson AND Butler would make hay when the sun was shining. Watching this, I think both took the week off and phoned it in.

Terry Smith getting the same positive vibes Mickey Joseph got as an interim HC. Your thoughts? If he doesn't take his night out on his wife in the next few weeks, does he have a chance?

Game went pretty much as I thought. Oh well. I think we match up much better with Iowa. And we're at home.

This is the result I would have expected back in August. Give Penn State credit for returning to form after a huge tailspin. We've arrived at the point where we can beat inferior teams with consistency, but better teams take us apart.

Iowa would be a quality win. If we lose to them, I guess the best win of the season was Cincinnati.

That's something I would not have expected in August.

That was tough to watch - just handled in the trenches yet again. Not sure I see a path to fix it either - same thing I said after Minny. Either some guys need to get WAY better they have or we need to go talent hunting big time to shore up the lines.

I'm afraid Iowa will do the same, irregardless of venue. Up front Huskers are soft as Charmin marshmallows.

I just thought the game was horribly called, on both sides of the game. We ran Emmit without taking any pressure off of him. (Understand he's Nebraska's showcase, but damn.) If I can see the play coming, so can the dumbest moron in the stadium. As far as the defense, I've no clue what they were running.

They tried to take the pressure off TJ early and we moved the ball with EJ mostly - just didn't get any points. I figured we were in big trouble when PSU scored the first 2 possessions including a 98 yard march. Eventually we showed the line is still not good - TJ did OK trying to survive but he got sacked and hurried several times. His legs help but it got ugly. Run defense has been bad all year - just a bad matchup with PSU - they are built to run it.

I expected Nebraska to win this game. Of course I knew there was a chance NU would lose, but getting totally dominated and embarrassed is something I did not expect. Silly me, I thought we'd turned a corner. I've thought that before and have tumbled back to reality; you'd think I'd learn. I thought we'd reached that point where we'd at least be competitive in every game. Wrong. I thought we were totally unprepared, our coaches on both sides of the ball didn't seem to have a clue. I frankly don't know what Rhule even does during games; every time they show him he's just walking around or looking up at the scoreboard with a puzzled look on his face. I expect Iowa will take us to the woodshed on Friday, and we'll probably lose whatever who cares bowl we get. 7-6, same as last year. That's not progress.

That was really embarrassing. Again. We were unprepared to play, pushed around, outcoached, and outclassed. I'm getting skeptical that Rhule knows what he's doing. He's in Year 3 and this team is still getting manhandled in the trenches and is nowhere near being competitive in this league.

All around pathetic. And just for added bonus, it was on national TV for the recruits to see.

Hard to argue with any of this KRed. Rhule's demeanor on the sideline does not exude confidence. For a guy who seems so comfortable doing podcasts in front of the camera he often times looks fearful and confused on the sidelines. I suspect Rhule will be joining the B1G channel as a regular studio host by 2028, and Nebraska will be stuck holding the bag with the contract extension thru 2032 he got a month ago. New coaching search to commence December 2027.

After Penn State went up 17-3, I shut the game off. The way they were running the ball, I knew we had absolutely no chance to come back and win.

That being said, we're not nearly as bad as a lot of people are saying. Take this team and give it a solid run defense, we'd have something. We're just incompetent at stopping the run. I don't know if John Butler is the right guy for DC and I'm really starting to doubt Holgorsen. Offensively this is the 2nd egg we've laid this season. Matt Rhule signed an extension earlier this year so he'll be here for probably at least 2-3 more years so if anyone is hoping he'll be shown the door, bad news it isn't going to happen.

Nebraska is better in a lot of different ways, but in the way that we're bad, it is absolutely terrible. Against PSU, Nebraska's rush defense is gave up 231 yards and 5.9 YPC. You cannot win in the B1G being so terrible in rush defense. Matt Rhule needs to earn his 7+ million a year salary and fix the run defense and we need to get a LOT more physical along the O and D lines.

We are a Pinstripe Bowl.contender, again. Been some good this year, and then totally outclassed on a national stage by a crappy team.

I'm sad
Really sad.

wrong wrong wrong....we cannot go to the pinstripe bowl...two year s in a row, PSU has a lousy record, but they have the same athletes that were in the playoffs last year and number 1 preseason this year.

Well if they do goto the Pinstripe Bowl I won't be going to see them play. Didn't last and will only go this year if they goto a warm weather city. So if they do goto the Pinstripe bowl they'll save me a bunch of money. At least there's that. ;)

I think all of us, whether admitted or not, expected so much more from this team, maybe not record wise, but definitely competitive wise. I don't know whether it is the players, the coaching, or the scheme--it's probably a combination of all three, but one thing is abundantly clear: We're just not good or physical enough along the O and D interior lines.

If Coach Rhule truly wants to build an elite, championship team, we need to focus on getting bigger, stonger, faster, and smarter players for our interior lines, because what we all saw in Happy Valley last night isn't even close to what the Top teams in our conference and the SEC has.
