Super Official Huskers vs Hoosiers Game Week Thread

Not truly expecting a win, but praying we are TRULY COMPETITIVE for this game. If that comes to pass, then after the last 20 or so years, I'll be good.

A loss is a loss. I don't believe in feel good "moral victories". It's time we started getting victories over ranked teams.

no beat downs please.
I understand. I know we, Husker fans, have gone through some really rough times over the past decade, if not this century.

But we're NEBRASKA dadgummit.

We're a CFB BLUEBLOOD. We're one of CFB's WINNINGEST all-time teams. We have FIVE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS (and by rights, should've had more.) Some of the BEST PLAYERS of all time have worn Husker red.

The time has come to reset our fan clocks BACK to BIG TIME. I'm sorry but no Husker fan should ever go into a big game in front of the home crowd thinking, 'no beat down please.'

Damn right. Aren't we at something like 30 losses in a row against ranked teams going back to 2016? Enough of that bovine feces!

Nowadays, I've noted some of the pundits snicker when talking about Nebraska and often mention our recent record against ranked opponents. When asked about it going into the season, Makai Nelson's response was: "That's not us."

He's right. This Husker hasn't played a ranked team. After Saturday, they'll either be 1-0 or 0-1.

I want us to be disciplined and on fire. Can't control the outcome, but we can do those two things. Let the chips fall where they may. I predicted a close win in the contest. I believe.

I bet $20 on the moneyline at +250. I don't think the point spread will be a factor. IF Indiana is focused and on their A Game, they probably win going away. With OSU on the immediate horizon, I think this is the perfect spot for the Huskers to steal a game from a highly ranked opponent. Doc Fum described it perfectly. This is the ultimate trap game.

For those unfamiliar with moneyline gambling, there is no point spread. Simply pick the winner. A $100 wager on Nebraska will be a $350 payout ($250 profit plus initial $100 bet). On the flip side, Indiana is -300, meaning one would have to wager $300 on Indiana to win a $100 ($400 payout). My $20 ticket on the Huskers will yield a $70 payout.

:gbr:

Thinking about if Nebraska manages to play well enough and win this game I keep coming back to 1977 and the game against #4 ranked Alabama. Nebraska was unranked and won 31-24.

This "Taking a DIfferent Path" business is getting old. OF COURSE, Rhule took a different path--he came to us from the NFL.

Other than that, the biggest difference between the two is that it took Rhule three seasons to piece together the right coaching staff while Cignetti brought his with him from JMU. The Cignetti approach can be dangerous, as we saw with Scott Frost, but Cignetti has been around the game a lot longer than Scott and knew the quality of the guys he was bringing with him whereas it felt to me like Frost was operating out of blind loyalty.

The other thing I think CIgnetti had in his favor besides the players he brought with him and the players Indiana already had was his team's uniform. When you're taking over The Worst program in CFB history, it's easy for your opponents to take a win over you for granted. To be honest, I think we went to Bloomington two years ago confident we would win and with a subconscious eye on Ohio State the following week.

Clearly, Cignetti and his coaches are strong talent evaluators. But this team -- along with this year's portal class -- would indicate that Rhule and Company aren't too shabby evaluators either. While the two HCs took different paths to get where they're at, it would be hard to argue that they both aren't heading in the same direction.

How the heck did Cignetti pull this off is a good question. Nobody else has done it in the NIL/Portal era. Bringing good players from JMU - huge part of the transition - up the talent and bring guys bought into the culture Cignetti expects. Clearly his JMU staff was really good - especially compared to the ragtag bunch Frost brought augmented with several local drinking buddies. The talent evaluation has been elite - as has his ability to get IU to provide the resources to get said talent to commit and stick around. I can assure you the NIL spend before Cignetti was WAY less than it is now at IU. Finally - his team is connected - culture, game prep, focus week to week - all aligned. Is that sustainable? TBD - eventually he's going to lose coaches (probably already has) - and he will have some recruiting/xfer misses as well.

Only way to win this game outside of Indiana forfeiting is have zero turnovers and play disciplined. Cignetti will have his boys ready to go and if they stay disciplined like they have for 2 1/2 years they will beat us badly.

Not predicting (yet) it's gonna happen. But chew on THIS...

Nebraska is the very definition of A TRAP GAME for the defending national champion, Indiana:
  • Like the Huskers in 1996, the Hoosiers are on (I think) a 21 game winning streak, when they come to Lincoln. (We were on a 26 game streak when we went to into a hostile environment in Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ. and GOT BEAT.)
  • This will be back-to-back ROAD GAMES for Indiana.
  • The Hoosiers played a LATE GAME on the East Coast last Saturday night and will turn around and play an EARLY GAME in Nebraska the next Saturday morning.
  • The Hoosiers could get caught LOOKING AHEAD to playing Big Dawg, Ohio State, in Bloomington the weekend after Nebraska.
  • INTERCEPTIONS were an issue for Josh Hoover, Indiana's new QB, coming from TCU. So far, he has yet to throw one for the Hoosiers. But at TCU, Hoover was MUCH MORE PRONE to throw his INTs ON THE ROAD vs at home.
  • UNLV's Colandrea-led offense scored 30 POINTS IN AN UPSET HOME VICTORY over UCLA last season.

Excellent points, thanks for that!

I've been working on this for some time. I have an impassioned plea and motivational speech for the Huskers this week. Here it is. Let me know if it inspirates you.
