He's Baaaaaaack! – After taking a ‘mental health’ day-off last Sunday, my Sunday post has returned. Before you give me a bunch of grief about being a no-show last weekend, my posting record is better than Nebraska’s ‘Chasing 3’ videos. They’ve only come after wins. If you check, I’ve posted after most of our losses too.

Holgerson – Goodness, where has THIS offense been??!? Yes, a good OC does make a difference, folks. Yesterday’s O was what I was expecting to see all damn season. The offense played with rhythm throughout the game and --- hold the phone and stop the presses – showed the kind of running game we'd expected to see all season long. Watching the game, you could tell DR and his Crew were having fun. Our offense played with the same swagger I saw from UCLA's O two weeks ago. Like many of you, I had my questions about Satterfield from the beginning but was willing to give him a chance. But let’s face it, Satt’s career OC record was never good and he never struck me as being very confident leader. The contrast between his pressers and Holgerson’s first one last week was like night and day. DH literally OOZES confidence—to the point of coming off as a cocky SOB. But let’s face it, if you play on offense, that’s the kind of guy you trust calling your plays.

Emmit Johnson – I’ve always been an EJ fan -- but Holy Moley, Man, Woman, & Child -- yesterday was a freaking revelation. What a game he had! Where has THIS EJ been hiding??!? He rose his game to a whole new level last night. If this EJ is a permanent fixure, he’ll be the starter for the rest of his Husker career. Dowdell is a great contrast and gives the offense a nice one-two punch. But yesterday, Johnson reminded me of some of our great RBs of Old.

Two RB Sets - I loved seeing that new offensive wrinkle. When you have a QB who is not going to be a running threat, it's a great way to keep the defense guessing.

The Blackshirts – They gave up way too many big plays for my liking. If they were teamed up with our old Satterfield “18 points a game” Offense, we’d have lost again. But, all in all, they had a decent game. I just wanted to really stick it to those Wiscy bastards by holding them to 10 points for the whole game.

Coach Rhule’s Mojo – @Hunchback Johnny observed something last week that really hit me hard. He said that Coach Rhule had lost the ‘twinkle in his eyes.’ It was so true--and frankly, a little scarey. That twinkle had been communicating to us fans that he has this rebuild thing well in hand. After the UCLA loss, he hasn’t been the same man (at least in front of the cameras.) But anyone who's been lumping Rhule in with our past HC failures needs to appreciate what a MAJOR change Coach made---during an IN-SEASON bye week, no less. If you ask me, such a critical move at such a critical time took serious kahoonas!!! Like the Sunday practice after the Michigan game last season, it could have blown up in his face. But our bowl eligibility says the big risk paid off. Listening to the post-game presser on the radio, it sounded to me like Coach Rhule had his old mojo back. :)

The Crowd – The crowd brought their A Game and the team responded to it. Listening to my radio from the stands, the Husker network's sideline reporter, Jessica Coody said she overheard Rhule speaking to this week’s captains on the sidelines before the coin toss. She said Coach told them something like, “Wow--just look at this crowd for a 5-5 team. This is amazing, guys.” The fans cheered loudly for the team all game long. And despite the big lead, they stayed to the very end to revel in the victory. After the game, the students stormed the field to join in the fun. It was a joyous sight and a memorable way to mark the end of our bowl drought. "Ding dong, the witch is dead! Go Big Red!"

Great recap! I even forgave the blackshirts. They bent a little but then straightened right up so it's all good!

GO BIG RED!!!

The Crowd – The crowd brought their A Game

1. I agree with everything you said.

2. However, I want to focus on the part I quoted. There is very much a symbiotic relationship between crowd noise, enthusiasm, and having an electric home game atmosphere with how the team plays..

The crowd starts very amped and into the game at kickoff, but needs the team to pull through and to keep giving them something to cheer for. What I mean is, it is difficult to keep the crowd engaged when the offense is going three and out and/or the defense keeps giving up first downs or big plays.

Yesterday afternoon Nebraska played arguably the best 4 Qs of football in not only in Matt Rhule's tenure, but in the last 10 years at least. The team, especially the offense, kept scoring, kept moving the ball, which absolutely kept the crowd in the game. In other words, the team kept giving the fans reasons to stay loud and be active.

Where has EJ been? On the sidelines mostly. Its unfortunate that he didnt get this chance until yesterday. As I said at the Illinois game, if he gets 20 touches we win easily. He didnt and we didnt. But yesterday they finally featured him and look what happens. He should have been the back all season long. Dowdell is a good short yardage back and power back but not an every down back. Rhamir is a good scat back and receiver and probably should have been used more like Barney. But EJ is an all around back, he hits the holes, makes guys miss, and can catch the ball out of the back field. Hopefully we see the same use against Iowa.

THIS!

Barney's kick-off return really got the crowd going from the get-go. But after Wiscy answered our first score, I think a whole bunch of us were thinking, "Oooooooooh Crap, here we go again!"

But as you said, H99, the offense kept their foot on the pedal all afternoon.

The thing I noticed was that our receivers were able to get better separation yesterday. Watching the USC game, our receivers were physically jammed at the line, then covered tightly, often held.

A better run game helps get receivers open, perhaps comments by DH also lit a fire. Great to see the disappearance of that “shooting in the foot pass play” the bubble screen.

RBs tended to show more initial burst, hitting the hole more quickly, less dancing, and more moving forward.

A few missed tackles and coverage made the game closer than it should have been, the 44-25 should have been more decisive.

With the addition of Dana Holgorsen, I really think the Husker coaching staff has found the perfect blend for success. Matt Rhule is the statesman, or diplomat if you will, that brings respectability and calm to a program that has been in turmoil for nearly a decade. Along comes DH, with his General Patton approach, bluntly telling receivers their perimeter blocking sucks and the running backs need to find the hole and voila, the offense wakes up and plays the best game of the year. Future looks bright if we can keep DH for a few years.

Great analysis DR F. Attitude and execution were the keys. They ran on passing downs, passed on running downs, played physical and never let up. It was like Rhule said after the game, they threw a TD pass that was negated and never gave it a thought, they simply loaded up and threw another one. This team played like the old NU, they played with swagger, they refused to lose. I loved it.

Absolutely dead on.

I snort chuckled at this. Did the fans stay to the very end to revel or "make sure?" When we went up 24 in the 3rd and Whisky scored in about 3 plays to answer I diced up small cubes of provolone and cheddar and was praying to the baby cheeses the Huskers would hang on for the win. I could not bear the thought of the Cheeseheads making a comeback.

Oh, I dunno. Never felt "uncomfortable" thru the game. Felt great to watch a offense that played fairly loose but with purpose. Amazing what an OC can do.
Your confidence and "buy in" with the new OC came much sooner than mine, Dave. Next week against Iowa I will feel confident we can trade body blows with them. Yesterday I was so damn fearful the O would crawl back into their shell and not answer the bell as the game wore on. It's what made the game so much fun yesterday. The O for the first time in years kept firing on all cylinders the hole game.

The O line dominated and that is what you get. The O works or it doesn't depend on the O line

Yeah it is always a bad look when parents start doing stuff like that. It's nothing personal against Fidone, but his blocking was suspect. Sometimes he'd make a terrific block and sometimes he'd whiff completely. If you're a TE, you have to be able to block consistently and Fidone struggled with blocking.

I'm not Sealioning here, but I would like to see video of that "terrific block". I must have missed it.
I've been disappointed in Fidone for quite some time. I don't think he's a bad guy. I think he may not be a football player. That's okay. Maybe it's time to move on. Some guys will have to hit the portal to make room for newcomers.
I wish him the best of luck wherever he lands.
Re-reading the above, I realize he hasn't declared for the portal-but I'm due for an accurate prediction.
